1200? christ thats over doing it, my engine has a cold rev limiter of 6000 until the engine is warm, then its 7000, but i generally dont go over 2.5k until its warm enough
It should really not be a problem if you drive like a normal person
My car idles at about 1500rpms for up to 30 seconds after start, to warm up the cats and O2 sensors. After that, it drops down to about 800.
So, I'm a college student, who knows jack shit about cars. I'm entering my third year, and I drive around a Jeep Tracker from 1990, and thanks to some maintenance (mainly thanks to my dad lol), we have managed to keep it in good condition.
However come January I'm planning to get a new car. My budget is around the 10k. My dad was talking about how an Honda Civic is probably my best choice at the moment. I'd like to agree but I don't know jackshit about cars. Any advice?
Ford Focus, bud. Best selling car in the world 2 years in a row, you'll have no trouble finding one for sale at a good price. You'll be able to buy a 2013 model for the price of an '09 Civic that has 2x the mileage on it.
*Insert "Ask me about my Ford Focus fetish" title here*
I've made it nearly three years without AC. The only time it sucks is when you're doing highway driving on a hot day. The wind noise gets too loud to keep the windows down. Just driving around the city is fine once you get a breeze going.
Personally, I love flying down the highway with all four windows down. It gives me an excuse to blast out my music as a metal fan and not give a shit about the looks I get headbanging down the road.
AHHHHHHHHH people who start their cars from dead cold and immediately drive away make me want to burn them down. Hate it when people don't wait at least 30 seconds for the oil to warm up so you don't fucking obliterate every damn seal in the motor from their generic 7-11 bought sludge oil they haven't changed in 65,000 mi.
I kinda sit about half-way between being paranoid about doing damage to my car to realizing that my work truck has 200k miles on it, and I'm the most particular driver who has only done 60k in it.
My work truck gets generic oil in it and it's never had an issue with it. My personal car I generally let it warm for a few minutes depending on ambient temps. Summer time I just crank and go since the oil's usually at least 90ish° and runs warmed at 140 to 160ish. Winter time when the average ambient temperature is 45ish°, I generally let it atleast warm so that the oil gauge is about 1/8th of the way.

I generally don't go over 2.5k anyway unless I'm getting on the highway. I have a big 6 liter V8 doing 7 grand at any operating temperature would be suicidal
Just got out of the hospital. Didn't make it to car show. The rad cap I had on the radiator was holding all the pressure, rather than relieving it as it's supposed to. It overheated 30 minutes into the freeway trip. I got out with a towel, and thought I'd be waiting a while to pop the cap. I opened the reservoir - and there was no fluid in it at all, which there should have been if the rad was 210 degrees like the temp said. I tapped the rad cap with the palm of my hand to see if it was really hot. As soon as I tapped it, the cap blew off and I guess I tried to run because I wound up kind of sideways, the fluid went right into my face. Some went in my mouth and that was gross.
Luckily my brother drove by (don't know how or where he was) and my fiancee called 911 because my face was just on fire. Fire truck came and they gave me saline and stuff, got transported to the hospital. It was bad. My brother had the car towed home, and it was in the driveway by the time I got back. I'm ok, my eyes will likely be swollen later, but my actual eyes are not burnt. I hunted that piece of shit cap down. It flew into a field next to the car. The firefighters were telling me to sit still and I was like oh f**** no, I am finding that cap and finding out WTF happened. I haven't really looked at it, but it does close onto the radiator ok. I'm thinking maybe the pressure was enough to spin it, but usually you have to push down and spin. It could also be a problem with the radiator neck, but right now I not in the mood to look it over.
Also waiting to find out whatever the tow company did to the car. Usually they are not gentle.

1200? Jesus, I think the idle in my car is higher than that. Not that it matters, since it revs up a couple hundred when it starts anyways. I'll usually give it a second before cranking, then I'll put on my seatbelt, get the music going, clear the carputer, etc.
Longshot, but anyone here going to be attending Chryslers at Carlisle in July? I know there are a few mopar guys here who might be in the area. Might be neat to meet some of yall, Who knows, Mr. Regular might be there. :v:

Check out Toyota. I believe that have special pricing for college students. You could get a cheap new vehicle for a few years and then buy a real vehicle post college

How much is it to get in? I'm down in VA, so it wouldn't be too far out of the way. Doubt I'll make it, though, but I might try.
[editline]14th June 2015[/editline]
Yeah, really glad you're ok Serj. I never touch anything in the engine bay when it's hot out of paranoia. Working with hot water enough makes you leery of fluids and oils that stick and scald.
Anyone here know of a car that shares looks like a Chevy Nova '67?

Anything made in 1967 has very similar styling.

Perhaps I've should have explained my situation better, I'm from the Caribbean, and I'll be living here until I finish college then I plan to move to the U.S. I plan to buy a car in the states and then bring it here via boat. Certain laws only allow me to bring cars that are 5 years old tops. Hence I need a car 2011 ( since I plan to buy it in January, or at least bring it that date).
So I'm not sure toyota makes those kinds of offers here. The reason I don't buy vehicles here its because used vehicles here are fucking trash.

I was watching a little.
Then my entire day flipped upside down when I looked at the results and Porche won...
Atleast Porche is... kinda a parent company of VAG.

Hate to hear that serj, When somthing has that much pressure goes it goes.
I was undoing my lower radiator hose off once with the engine nice and toasy, un tightened the gearworm afew turns and started seeing the hose move by its self I noped the fuck out of there QUICK. I was a good.... 10ft from it and STILL felt the heat off the steam.
Take care of your self mang, atleast now you dont have to go into a steam room for awhile. :)

Jeez, this is nightmare tier stuff for me, fuck burns. When my auto tech teacher in high school showed us pictures of burns people got from radiator cap accidents and peoples skin coming off in literal globs it made me paranoid as shit, I won't touch them until like, 24 hours after the problem turns up and it's had plenty of time to cool down.
Hope you don't look too much like the big guy from the goonies after its all sorted. : ^)

Oh god I want to help that poor abused Parklane
I saw a Dart with a for sale sign today. Hmmmmmm
Okay, so, update on my half-shaft. I decided instead of doing OEM half-shaft replacement on my driver side, I'm going to do an upgrade on both shafts.
Question, what do you guys recommend for an '08 Charger SXT AWD? My mechanic's charging $60 per side and my budget for upgrades would be about $500 since I was gifted my other birthday budget item this week. I'm looking to upgrade the amount of oomph the front end can take on the car to prevent it from happening again, next on the docket is to upgrade the suspension all around with stiffer suspension.

Yeah, I started watching at around 1 hour in, had to take a break at midnight to play taxi driver, rejoined at 11am. There were some crazy stuff, like the ferraris catching fire, the Aston going straight in to the wall, and the Audi getting its front ripped off, limping to the pit and getting a full repair.

I'd rather get a low mile Honda Fit in the same price bracket as a Civic, the Fits are holding value like crazy and are really more of a spiritual successor to the Civic than what the Civic is now. The only downside to the Fit is that it's a cheaper car and you won't find the "refinement" that the Civic and other newer cars have. The newer Mazda 3's are also a really great hatchback.
It really depends on what you want, we can sit here and suggest cars all day long. You need to go out test drive 20-30 cars or at least sit in them for a while to find out what kind of cars you want. After you find some cars you like we can give you suggestions and advice on other cars and the cars you pick.

Sounds good, in two months I'll travel to the states to visit some family and I'll take the chance to do some test drives. I'll come back after I have some potential prospects. Thanks for the help! Last question: can anyone tell me just how big is the difference between a Civic 2011 and a 2012?

The 2012 sucks unless you get an Si, the build quality is worse and the styling is even more terribly boring. The 2013 was "redesigned" but it's still the same car, the 2014/2015's are pretty good. The Coupe is shapeless as hell because it's simply just a continuation of the USDM Civic Coupe we get because we don't have the hatchback anymore. The Civic Coupe isn't sold anywhere else in the world and hasn't been since 1995 as the only REAL Civic Coupe was 92-95 with anything after that being designed solely for the US market.

It wont be quite that bad. No blisters. But my skin did peel off immediately after it happened. The likely $2500 ambulance ride and $1500 hospital bill will hurt worse. Lol.

Unless it's a really good price, no. The 2012 Civic dropped in quality so much that it's the only time Consumer Reports didn't recommend it. It's probably still a gem reliability wise, but it's otherwise inferior to its competitors.
My dad has a 2011 Pilot which was a prelude of sorts for the drop in quality across the company in 2011-2012. The dashboard is all cheap plastic and the trunk trim pieces all fit poorly.
However, it's mechanically better than the previous generation Pilot, whereas the Civic is generally regarded as worse.
[editline]14th June 2015[/editline]
That's just my opinion, though. After living with a 90s Ford in all its warped Ford plastic majesty:
[t]http://i.imgur.com/u4QRbyj.jpg[/t][t]http://i.imgur.com/CalKxdI.jpg[/t]
then moving to an upscale Toyota, I have come to really appreciate interior quality.
[t]http://i.imgur.com/jj4YqxT.jpg[/t]
The interior on my 17 year old car has held up far better than my dad's 4 year old truck. :v:
If you're going for interior quality, the newer Mazda 3s are excellent, even in the most basic trim.
