Automotive Addicts Lounge V2- Why we are all broke:

Yeah, the DMV isn't known for being friendly nor quick here and plates are so easy to swap out and can be done without having the proper title that it's not that effective. If you don't have a title in the name you're buying it from you're setting yourself up to be screwed over hard if that title comes back dirty. Also, IIRC, title registries aren't considered public information, so you can't just look it up for yourself willy-nilly, and 3/4 of car owners don't know their VIN numbers to track it which is what the DMV uses for that.
The VIN is somewhere on the car though, the one I sold didn't even have plates, we'd handed them in for whatever reason.
Got a new rear tire put on my bike today. Went on a 250 mile ride with my dad.
So today I had to fold a side mirror on my grandpas van to get through to the garage with a new shelf and as soon as I applied any pressure to the mirror it just fucking crumbled into tiny pieces and fell to the floor. Ironically the actual mirror pieces are fine
Fucking citroen
thats one serious mailbox if it transferred enough energy to break the mirror on the opposite side.
Nah it makes sense

Already called in.
going to the first cars and coffee (ever!) in my town tomorrow. I will report back on how many 911s were there and how unamused I was at them.
on a related note, me and my friend were thinking of names for cars and coffee events using the formula
name=(semi-regular breakfast food)+&+(plural car/engine part)
French Toast & Fuel Injectors
Pancakes & Pistons
Eggs & Exhaust Manifolds
Crumpets & Crankshafts
Toast & Turbochargers
Scones & Superchargers
started to stretch the limits a bit
Oatmeal & Oil Filters
began to resort to wikipedia for car parts
Hash Browns & Hydraulic Booster Units
anyone got any other good names?
Eggs with black truffles & electronic limited slip differentials
Batteries & Bacon

People pull these off and put them on other cars, or put other cars' VINs in vehicles with salvage or lost titles. Both are completely illegal.
What are the best, and most reasonable priced speakers for an NA miata. Door and Headrest.
From what I've gathered, door speakers are 6.5"S, 3 holes, and depth isn't a terrible issue, but can affect the door hinge mechanism. And the headrest ones are 3.5" and have to be very shallow.

Found this photograph with a Mercedes Gullwing racing a car I don't recognize (but I feel like I should). Anyone know what it is?
Cafè Racers?
I'd like to start welding, but I have no idea where to start learning, or even what equipment to get.
An AC/DC stick welder with HF AC TIG capabilities. You start and get good at stick welding, and when you've learned that, you move on to TIG. Wire feed welding is stupid easy and you won't learn anything from it.

Cafe Racers are a thing in specific though and a very awesome thing.

Jaguar XK120. We've discussed the car before. Remember? A car literally designed to have curves like a lady.

Fun fact: my landlord has one that he's restoring, and we just built a floor for him for it (wood floors) and the body was stamped WITHOUT the headlight bezel housings, then a worker tacked them to the body and welded them on. The technology to allow a form to be made like that for pressing steel did not exist yet.
Just came back from Mad Max too lol. Tom Hardy seriously had that "I am schizophrenic" face.
On another note, one of my dreams after getting my own car is to join in an amateur rally. I was looking at the local ones and it required shit like 5 point safety harness, roll cage, some fuel retardant, extinguisher, 2 independent latches for bonnet etc etc. The worse part is you need all that PLUS a roadworthy registered car and in NSW language which means spending 80% of your money on trying to get it engineered and certified. Eeeeeeh too much work and cash.
In Malaysia there's an annual amateur rally where the regulation was literally, a stock 1.6-2.0l engine, no turbos and 2wd, bucket seats and 4 point harnesses and that's about it. Its to get people interested into rally and if you do not have one already they'll appoint an actual pro-rally guy to be your navigator.
That's really weird cos the cheapest requirements for the first amateur I did was just a helmet and a safe car. it was a tarmac rally in WA fyi

That's the one! Thanks.
The weather was prohibitive and we were never able to go check out the Valiant. It's now sold. :(
How hard is it to get a title for a self built trailer?
I want a trailer for my truck, was thinking it would be cheaper to build it myself rather than buy one. Figured I could build a 5x8 or 5x10 easily enough.
CAN you get a title for a self built trailer? If so how much does it typically cost?
I don't know how much it costs, but we deal with the same thing when we build boats. You identify the builder or manufacturer, which is just your name, then mark the trailer with a number that can be identified, then register it. Your state will likely make it easy for you to register something because you're offering them money.
I thought it usually went the other way around.
I left my moms insurance plan shared with her, my brother and I. My insurance dropped like $25 a month.

keep all the receipts for the materials. Get a state trooper to stamp it after it's done. Get plates.
They want to see reciepts for materials to make sure you didn't steal anything you used to make it.
I just saw an R32 GTS-T I wish I could afford to drop so much money on a car right now
Cams and crumpets!
Not too late to the party am I?

Don't know how it is over there, but here it's sorta difficult. It's a lot easier to grab an old camper, take the camping bit of and make a trailer out of that, then you've got the brakes, axles, etc already.
I kept them on my policy thinking that they were keeping my rates down since I have an accident on file, even though neither of them drive my car at all. Guess I was wrong.
You insured 3 drivers for one vehicle in which only one drives. That just doesnt make sense to me to begin with. I understand why you would do it, but thats just 2 more people to pay for
Yay for not having to insure every driver of my car! Only downside is I'm the only one under 23 that can drive it, but older people can drive it no problem.
