vtec is a really watered down term, generally vtec is attributed to the old vvl of the early motors but there was also vtec-e which was a vvc system, 3 stage vtec which was vvl and vvc and now i-vtec which refers to any motor which has vvt who's motors can also include vvl, vvc or vcm. This makes it a pain in the ass to know which K series motors are actually good as the K20A3 like in crazycory65's EP3 Civic Si that makes 145hp stock at the crank while a K20A2 will make 185-190ish and even up to 200 with some tuning and bolt-ons while the other lump struggles to beat the base model motor it replaced. http://www.hondata.com/techk20general.html There's also i-vtec on the R series motors which uses vvl for a very low cam which will also wide open the throttle and limit the engine through it's cam profile to reduce pumping losses during cruising. http://asia.vtec.net/Engines/RiVTEC/ There's tons of information and charts on vtec, if you want to know about variable valve tech Honda's pretty much done it all. Every motor/platform has different implementations and it changes as new motors are designed as well. [editline]1st June 2015[/editline] BBQ Paint? Caliper paint is ass, I've never managed to get it to cure/stick/dry. Your best bet is lots and lots of coats.
That first link was a really cool read - I never knew that the K20A2 had 2 extra lift valves per cylinder, that's really fucking cool and intuitive.
Does sand pass through an intake filter?
It shouldn't, but it'll clog it.
Some guy offered me $4800 for my 4-door 1968 Ford LTD. [img_thumb]http://i.imgur.com/jxUk0KG.jpg[/img_thumb] I was thinking about selling it and using the money to get one of the cars I had been eyeing lately, which are a 1968 Galaxie XL Fastback ($3200) or a 1973 dodge Dart Sport ($2500) What do you guys think I should do?
I'm not a "car guy", I just take care of my car and like driving it, past the first week I bought it I wouldn't brag because that shit is awkward. But I lived with a guy that was a self proclaimed BMW guy of sorts. He had a E34 325 that he knew so much about and was really good at driving, even though he doesn't have a license. And doesn't have any tools beyond the original toolkit in the trunk. When he's getting close to taking his drivers test he starts fixing the car. Apparently that meant asking his sister's boyfriend to fix it. After about $1k it all stops because the wheel bearing was "Some kind of weird type that seemed to be smaller than the hub itself" What the fuck. He found a licensed mechanic that didn't understand the concept of a press fitment(dunno english term). After replacing the entire hub with one that had a wheel bearing, the final straw was a blinker mount. They couldn't come up with a single way to temp mount it for it to pass inspection. So he gave up and traded it for some passat 1.9 turbo diesel, having the timing belt replaced and spent money on a new grille and fog lights. Gave up on the fog lights though! Apparently you had to do wiring for that. Then he got bored and traded up for a Audi A4 2001 1.8l, paid about 6k for it with the entire sum in a loan, moved home to afford his loan. Proceeds to snap at his mom and gets thrown out, has to sell his car because apparently you can't afford monthly loan payments and full cover insurance as an apprentice :downs: I guess I just really regret not buying that E34. [editline]1st June 2015[/editline] Oh and he wants to sell the A4 for 10k because apparently it's worth even more now.
Does sand pass through an intake filter?
My racing car has an open air filter, a H&N one. Last time at the track I opened up the airbox because there was too much oil spilling into it and you could see sand was getting in. But then again the track in in the middle of the sand dunes heh.
Does sand pass through an intake filter?
Do you not see what I see in that picture?
I'm not a car guy, but Ive only owned fords, and they looooooooooooooove maintenance.
Unless you're traveling in the outback (which you really shouldn't do in a civic), sand isn't that much of a problem here. I once driven in the country side in a rental car and the engine stopped because the air filter was literally clogged with insects.
That first link was a really cool read - I never knew that the K20A2 had 2 extra lift valves per cylinder, that's really fucking cool and intuitive.
The base of it in the K series has been around since the B16A in 88', the old DOHC vtec is pretty similar short of the superior roller rockers. The really crazy crazy stuff you can find between 95-00 when they made "3 stage vtec" single cam heads which were also mated to a CVT over in Japan for the 96-00 EK generation. Not only did they package in the normal SOHC vtec which is also quite nifty but they jammed in the vtec-e(vvc) from the same platform into the same head. This motor was crazy as 50mpg was possible while still putting down 130hp out of 1.5L. http://asia.vtec.net/article/d15b/ http://asia.vtec.net/spfeature/vtecimpl/vtec1.html -- really old school link Here's a super clean stock as shit looking turbo D15B 3 stage vtec EG Coupe that makes 230whp, 55MPG highway and has A/C. Absolutely amazing car, I've always thought doing a similar build would be super cool as a daily. http://ecomodder.com/forum/showthread.php/1994-honda-civic-d15-3-stage-vtec-turbo-11881.html The normal SOHC vtec implementations are pretty interesting still because they're packaged into such a small profile, although they only work on the intake valves. It's quite interesting how similar they are to the later non-vtec heads and how you can actually delete the vtec with stock parts without making any serious modifications. Also check out the combustion chamber on the later D series motors and look at how spaced out the valves are for the vtec :v: http://www.d-series.org/forums/engine-building/85114-converting-vtec-head-non-vtec.html http://www.d-series.org/forums/engine-building/96072-y7-valve-train-y8-head-vtec-disabled-fits-ive-done.html Here's all the K series motors broken down with some good pictures too. http://www.superstreetonline.com/how-to/engine/1402-k-series-engine-family-breakdown/ Honda knows how to make a really damn good motor, but damn do most models get the most basic lumps. I'm excited to see what they do with turbos now.
I'm about to make my first-ever Craigslist listing for my dad's truck. Any advice to make it more appealing to potential buyers?

Because that would just be the top of the kransecake. I do regret not buying a real E34 though, it had been sitting for several years, but whatevs, I could've gotten it for the scrap price had I just been persistent enough. Also make it funny/special/share worthy, that'll get you more views.
Also make it funny/special/share worthy, that'll get you more views.
I would actually advise against this. The wise-ass CL ads got really old really fast. Just present the facts in a logical way, and pair them good, informative photos.
I'm about to make my first-ever Craigslist listing for my dad's truck. Any advice to make it more appealing to potential buyers?
Form complete sentences like someone above the age of 12 and provide more than 2 sentences. There, better than 80% of cl ads.

The real winner of this photo is the rust spot above the wheel well. Every CV I've ever used has rust in this exact spot.
Plenty of info, good pics, niiiice truck, I grade that listing a solid A [editline]1st June 2015[/editline]
The real winner of this photo is the rust spot above the wheel well. Every CV I've ever used has rust in this exact spot.
Im actually glad that my paint job is so shitty. Its chipping up under all 4 fenders, but the rust isnt too bad, its mostly surface and just a teeny bit of pitting. If I had a good paint job, the steel would be thouroughly rust-raped by the time the paint fell off and it looked so ugly I was forced to repaint it. At this stage, sanding out the fenders and rocker panels, rust treating them, and repainting them is just a 2 day project tops. Ill be doing it in the next few weeks.
Do you not see what I see in that picture?
A clogged air filter within a few thousand miles or less, yeah. I don't see that killing any engine though. Just don't let your filter dry out and crack or submerge the intake.

So placed the order for the idler pulley its coming all the way from South Connecticut because so far that is the only place that has the braincells required to figure out you have to sell the pulley AND hardware for it to work.
Thanks to Bad rocker arms on my 72 Impala, I've learned alot bout old school car shit. I've fallen in love with 60s/70s Engines now. Oh god I just started watching Roadkill where has this been all my life I have been so blind!
I feel like the last few episodes of Roadkill have been kinda half-Roadkill, if that makes any sense. Like, the first several dozen episodes they actually showed them fixing the junk cars and jury-rigging different ways to get do an obscene objective in an ungodly fast amount of time, and now the last few have just been 'eh, yeah, so, we drove the car. It has a motor we put in it. Here's three things we had issues with, but no real footage of. Enjoy.' I mean, the original Mayhem they had an entire episode of them actually doing work on the car, and no real driving it. Now they seem to skip that part just to the driving, which to me, isn't quite as exciting, honestly.
