Practice. Instead of waiting to be naturally gifted at something, work for it. For example, you're on the computer right now. You enjoy it. Learn how the work, or learn how to program, learn something! You've got an interest, it's time to turn it into a career.
If I understand it correctly, coding requires a lot of working knowledge of geometry and stuff that I don't have as I'm bad at math. I guess I could learn more about how they work, but what career would that be useful for? [editline]3rd December 2010[/editline]
I'm terrible at everything I try and do. Art, music, photography, programming, comedy, games. You name it, I've tried and horribly failed at it. Luckily for me being a useless fuck was one of the essential requirements needed to be considered management material for the council, so things have worked out fine for me :hfive:
Council?
It's unfortunate. Most people seem to have a forte, and I... don't. I'm mediocre at maths and that sort of thing even after studying it intensely, and I'm no good at art either (though I suspect this is because art is something that requires a lot of practice, and not involuntary skill) I'm genuinely worried about what I'm going to end up doing for a living, as everything above flipping burgers involves high-level math or some serious skill in art. Would you offer some guidance, Facepunch Studios?
It all has to do with your interests and how you apply yourself to them. Imagine a clone of yourself, exactly alike in every way. You never took initiative to learn how to play guitar or how the Quantum Theory of Dynamics works or some shit. Now, your clone did, thus he is smarter and is talented like a motherfucker. APPLY YOURSELF TO SOMETHING YOU'RE INTERESTED IN! Simple as that. I'm good with computers, audio, cars, car audio, guitar, bass, drums, writing, and I smoke erryday.
Yeah, but that makes it more important. I'm supposed to be finding what I'll specialize in and I have no idea.
Not really.. Hardly anyone in highschool really knows what they want to do after it. You'll soon realise what you do after highschool is way more important than school. Do the core subjects and pass them..then worry about what direction you want to go on in
You do have a forte You suck at everything!
Council?
Local government in the UK.

You won't be getting good any anything if you don't even try. I'm shit at math, but I show up to class every day to try to get better. It seems that you're not even willing to try to put forth any effort.
Local government in the UK.
Ah. [editline]3rd December 2010[/editline]
I just read your post as "It's too hard". Just keep trying. Maybe something in your brain will click and you'll become a math god. I fucking suck at writing but that's not gonna stop me from trying to get better.
Why'd you post this right after trying to crap me out in my thread? Don't become a lawyer or a doctor just because it gives lotsa money. Thats crap. That means you will be working for the rest of your life. (unless you want to be those things) Like many people said, tell us what you do in your free time, and we can figure it out from there.
Nothing productive right now. A lot of video games.
You do have something you're good at. You just haven't found out what it is yet. I used to be like you, then I started making music. I love it, and I like to think I'm pretty good at it :) Just take it easy and keep looking, you'll find something eventually. Don't try and rush things, otherwise you'll end up doing shit you don't want to do.

"Work harder" isn't helping me. I tried that with math; it didn't work. I'm willing to put in work, but I have no direction. I can't think of a better analogy, so here's one: Doing what you guys are telling me to do (work harder when I'm not sure what to work harder at) is like training one completely random skill to V in Eve one after another. As with real life, that means you'll have no useful specialization and won't make any money. It would be pretty nice if real life were as simple as games like Eve. I could deal with training my racial Battleships, support, and gunnery skills up to V and doing some ratting or missions for grocery money.
Just pass highschool with B-A grades in each subject.. then make a thread like this Like i said, most people have no idea what they want to do after highschool, while they're in highschool What you learn in highschool isn't going to earn you money. You're probably gong to study after highschool if you want to get a proper job, unless you're lucky enough to know people
Because apparently a lot of "good" jobs require a good knowledge of math
Maybe the teachers aren't teaching it well. Everybody learns differently. And don't worry about "good" jobs. Just get a job you love.
No, I've had great math teachers and tried learning math skills independently, too. I'm convinced I'm no good at it.
Right, now I come from the UK so I'm not sure now important Maths is in the US, but I'm 16 and a stage of education called 6th form. on the whole at this stage we take 4 A-levels but we can take more or less but that does not happen much, Anyhow at this point I'm in one of the largest schools in Yorkshire and only around 30 in the whole of my year take maths me being one of them, what this shows me is that every few people take advance maths and many people who don't take it are still very happy later in life and are not in as you say "flipping Burgers". I guess what I'm saying it that you do not need to amazing at maths to do well in life, all you need to do it pass you maths exams and Find something you can do. And before you say there is no subject you are good at, think, is that really true, I mean think about the subjects you do and think about your grades, are they so bad you can claim you are not good at anything?
do it like a man and cheat your way out of school
What kind of games do you play most?
No, I've had great math teachers and tried learning math skills independently, too. I'm convinced I'm no good at it.
Ive had great English teachers as well. Still doesn't mean they aren't teaching it in a way that my brain understands it.
What kind of games do you play most?
There's no real rhyme or rhythm. Anything which captures my attention.
I honestly wouldn't worry too much OP. When I was sixteen I had zero interest in school and didn't put much effort into my final exams. Since I had no idea what I was good at, I didn't go to college or university since I knew I would just be wasting more years of my life studying something I didn't care about. You might not figure out your forte any time soon but something will work out for you until you do. My last boss worked in our office for ten years and has recently left the council to study to become a teacher. He's about 35 or so. There isn't a time limit on finding out what your calling in life is. PS I failed maths but I work in credit control doing lots of maths all day. My inability to figure out what x was equal to didn't matter in the end. NEVER GIVE UP CHASE UR DREAMS etc
do it like a man and cheat your way out of school
I'll pass high school easily, I'm just probably not going to have a good-enough knowledge of math to complete college. [editline]3rd December 2010[/editline] That's good to know, Jobby.
Math and science aren't everything. Try more new stuff, who knows what will stick.
I love science in the "theoretical" sense, just not the tons of math attached to it via physics and such. (god damned math always being important and etc... =()
Meh, I always thought I'd be doing engineering or astronomy, but I've steadily been losing interest in maths and physics as a professional choice. A couple of years ago I started playing around in FLstudio and with pixel art just for the sake of helping Namelezz (fellow facepuncher) with his game projects. I found both very rewarding and enjoyable and later (very recently) decided I'll get a degree in electronic music (Hey it's free where I come from and I'll probably learn a lot). If it works out GREAT if not I'll just keep trying. If you know any friends who are working on projects be it small indie-games music or something else, try to contribute with something with you think you'd be able to do that the project currently lacks. I wasn't particularly skilled with pixel art but I liked seeing the project evolve and enjoyed seeing my drawings come to life and eventually I got better. Just my 2 cents.
Teach YOURSELF new things (nothing better or satisfying than learning something yourself), go out and do something new. That how I found out what I'm good at, and it's not just one thing! Just dig deeper.
Dude. Don't fret it. I'm 21 and still not sure what to do with my life.
Theres many things to do in life. Hell, I heard being a hobo could be just as good as being Bill Gates (maybe it's cause it's the same thing)
