It's either getting it fixed now or winding up with a gum abscess, which is a worse problem than a decayed tooth. Unfortunately I can't offer much more beyond what you're already doing, it has to be cleaned out and filled or there's going to be worse to follow.
I do love it when a practical subject gives assignments without actually explaining how/what to think when doing it, only gives a bunch of examples then the professor goes "Ok now you know everything about the assignment, go do it"

Race horses go through tons of training, but basically they're trained to not freak out when in close proximity horses and also keep running the race when they lose their rider. Much in the same way the battle horses of old were trained to ride away with their rider is he was injured.
