A squared plus B squared equals C squared, so C squared minus B squared probably equals A squared. Unless I'm not reading your diagram correctly, I don't know why you'd have to use trigonometry to figure that out at all.

I'd say tangent. I went with a little [URL="http://www.mathsisfun.com/algebra/trig-finding-side-right-triangle.html"]tutorial[/URL] that went ahead and said we just have to know one side and one unknown. I also went with tangent, which according to SohCahToa, is the opposite (x) and the adjacent (17). Tangent of the angle at the adjacent (which is 54 degrees).
