my favourite Haneke film is probably Funny Games it's actually not a horror film but it also manages to totally flip like every horror convention and it is so smart and almost fun if it wasn't so harrowing lmao. it's about 2 guys who come into a rich family's vacation home and take them prisoner basically. It's full of like messing with the audience to piss off people expecting a conventional horror movie and it's got some breaking the fourth wall stuff. It's one of my favourite movies. Cache is really cool too it's about a guy who gets sent anonymous video tapes of increasingly suspect stuff and it builds up to something that happened in his past. And Amour (won the Oscar for best foreign film in 2012) is about an old man dealing with his wife's deteriorating health. Incredibly sad but really really good.
And Tarkovsky is considered one of the greatest of all time, his film Stalker inspired the video game series. I'd recommend that. And his sci-fi Solaris, and his first film Ivan's Childhood which is about a child spy in WWII. I've not seen much of his stuff but everything he's done is really acclaimed.
Funny games was pretty fucking disturbing.
I'd love to see another movie like Children of Men, The setting for that was fucking exellent. I really should try and pick up the novel at some point.

the original is slightly better than the American version, they're exactly the same (haneke directed them both and its a shot for shot remake) but the guy who plays the main villain in the Austrian version is so great
