On a Last.FM profile, you can track how many times you've listened to an artist by "scrobbling" it from your music player. To scrobble means to add the statistic to your profile. Most people that have Last.FM just leave their scrobbler on all the time.
Basically, he listened to different songs from the Portal soundtracks almost 4,000 times. Which is enough to drive anyone insane, really.
