It controls how close things can be to the camera before it stops rendering it.

I really wish game designers would stop sticking to the trope of the untouchable guns in their games (enemy drops a gun, but it can't be picked up at all. i.e.: those weird assault rifles in RAGE, or whenever an NPC drops a weapon in Alien: Isolation). I haven't played many games that have this, but it's oh so annoying and stupid.
