Didn't know where to post this and this looked like the most general thread I could find..
My cat just fell out the 8th floor of my flat at 3 AM (it's 4:40 AM as I write this). I'm the only one taking care of her in my family since I'm the one who brought her into our home. I live on the 9th floor and these few days she had been in heat (was going to get her spayed after her heat cycle was over), so she was generally really noisy and yowling at the front door. I was in my room for a while until I realised it had been too quiet for a while, and went out to see the front door slightly ajar. This door is usually closed; my parents and I always make a point to keep it closed when going in or out. My brother is the only one who doesn't do this, so it could have been him who left the door open. However, I also have two relatives staying in my home right now so it could have been them too.
Anyway, I went out to look for her and didn't find her on my floor, so I went down to the 8th floor and there she was sitting on a ledge. I'd heard many stories of cats falling down buildings usually due to something distracting or startling them, so I didn't dare go over to her, especially when she was in heat which made her more agitated than usual. I called to her and she didn't come, so I inched towards her. She saw this and basically jumped off. It took me a full second to react and look over the ledge before I saw (and heard) her fall to the ground with a plop and a yelp, in between two parked cars. She scurried under one of the cars to hide.
Next I went to get a cardboard box and some towels, and I went downstairs to collect her. I bent over to see her under the car and she was panting with a very light wheeze; some blood was around her mouth and little red bubbles were forming at her nose. I tried moving her from under the car as gently as I could without disturbing her position too much, and I also gently prodded her in various parts to see if there were areas of her body I should avoid agitating.
In the end, it went pretty smoothly and I managed to get her into my box. I brought her back up to my home and lay her on the floor on some towels, again trying to do it as gently as I could. I haven't moved her much to examine her body so I can't ascertain if she's bleeding from somewhere other than her mouth, but there was blood in the fur around her hind leg. She was fairly quiet, only making small moans every 2 minutes or so, or when I handled her in a way that presumably hurt her.
She was still strong enough to walk, which I might have guessed from the way she scampered under the car after landing, but after a while I realized she was limping; one of her hind legs (I don't remember which and I'm not about to check now) just kept buckling under her weight. She didn't like to lie on the towel I gave her, and hobbled away before lying down again. Something else I noted was that she keeps resting her chin on her paw, so hopefully that's good news in that the blood around the mouth is from superficial injuries to her jaw/chin area rather than some internal bleeding that's making blood come out of her mouth. Also, this might have merely been due to stress and shock, or it could be because of some injury, but as she hobbled away, a few pieces of faeces were just dropping out of her anus.
I don't know what else happened in the time until now, but right now she's quiet and lying on her side, resting her head on her paw. Her eyes are slowly closing and it looks like she's drifting off to what I hope is sleep. She looks like she's peacefully resting, and she's definitely more peaceful than in the recent nights where she was in heat.
As I said, it's around 4 AM, not to mention just after Christmas. There isn't really any vet that I can take her to right now so I'm waiting until around 9 AM to bring her to one. I haven't woken up anyone in my home, but my hopes for her are high after reading all I've read about similar accidents with cats, which usually resulted in little more than injuries to the chin and leg fractures.
I guess I got a bit carried away in telling my story, when I actually came to ask if there's anything I should be looking out for, or if there's anything I can do to ease her until she goes to the vet. Besides this, I also just needed some place to rant. A few times I've woken up to see the front door open and my cat would just be chilling in the corridor not far away. It's made me angry with whoever left the door open those few times. This time, I guess with her hormonal desire to find a mate, she just wandered into a place that she never would have gone normally.
Another thing which I'm also curious about is my whole reaction; I loved this cat, she's basically been my only friend whenever I was at home. But beyond the initial shock, I'm not feeling much about this. I'm not feeling sad or anxious (except maybe when she's moaning, but she's stopped now), and I'm about to go to sleep with her lying just next to my bed. probably in pain. It's a strange feeling, being so unfeeling.

P.S. As I finish this post, I see that she's recovered enough to slightly hobble around to get into a more comfortable position, before dozing off.
definitely take her to the vet when you can to get her checked, she most likely have a fractured leg. and it's a good thing you're not panicked, otherwise you would have quickly lost control of this situation.

My PC still can't wirelessly connect to the internet, so I've been using an ethernet cable since i built it last year. It connects to the router but not the internet (save for a few moments where it loads the thumbnail image of a site before breaking again), and nothing I've tried has worked.
