What didn't you put on right?
What didn't you put on right?
The timing cover. One bolt wasn't tight enough when I put fluids in and started it the first time. The RTV didn't get to grip the metal and coolant went between the RTV seal and the metal. So water leaked at the timing cover mating surface. Should be fine now though. I'm just over this engine, so much work for so little power

I fucking love the Right stuff.

You're supposed to tighten the bolts on assembly so the RTV adheres to the pores in the metal surfaces and creates a tight seal. Well I missed one bolt and the coolant shot out of that weak area in the timing cover. I tightened it down and assumed it to be ok. But the leaking became progressively worse to the point where it would mix with the oil in the oil pan. It's such a pain to work on the engine while it's in the bay but I did it. I used Permatex Ultra Grey and I tightened everything down this time. Hopefully I didn't mess up the headgasket or something. Should be ok. I'll put back everything and test drive her tomorrow, I'll post a pic
Just got done rebuilding/restoring my starter, stopped in to get some gas last night and it just went rrreeerrr rrreeerrr, like it wasn't getting enough juice. turns out the brushes are almost done and it was dirty as fuck. So I cleaned it up, regreased the moving bits and futzed with the 4 brushes a bit and now it runs like a top. Thank god, I don't have the dosh for a new starter right now.
Denso starters are notorious for acting like this, you'll most likely get another 5-10k miles and will have to do it again. Mine lasted just 4 months before getting worse than before. I bought a reman Denso from Rockauto and it was worth every cent.. I don't know how many times I abused my flywheel and clutch trying to start my old starter, definitely wasn't worth it. The reman Denso units are really great too, I never knew how quick and instant my car should start..

The only thing I'd NEED for the starter is the brush part and those brushes are very nearly done, I just hope what little more I could get them to move to the armature holds out till I can get the new brushes. I also cleaned the ever loving shit out of it, no chemicals what so ever on the brushes as ANY chemical, oils mostly, will cause an ignition condition when the motor is charged which heats the brushes and burns em' up faster. I made that mistake with a 12 volt hobby motor, so to avoid that mistake again I used Dawn dish detergent and Fast Orange hand cleaner. Only the magnet housing, brush housing and brush assembly got washed as nothing else needed it.
My roommate got new tail lights for his bike a month or so ago, and they wouldn't turn on after he installed them. Last night we tore down the bike and got them working, but after we put it back together, they stopped again. I spent the afternoon chasing wires and taping up connections. He should be good to go, now.
taping up connections.
there's your problem
there's your problem
There were a couple that had inline connections, but just a tiny bit of the metal connector was outside of the insulator, and were grounding against the chassis and popping the fuse. So I wrapped those up.

I just want to save up for my dream car, and stop dumping money into the civic that could go towards it. If i want to be able to afford it any time soon, i'll have to save up hard core. [editline]18th February 2014[/editline] Also, the turbo was reliable minus the blown head gasket :P

What are you thinking now?
Updates on the L28 (hey that rhymes) Removed the sump, trying to get the front cover off. Also has numbered big ends and big end caps, thanks Nissan. Before decapitation. Looks smaller now don't it? This cheeky fucker was glued down after we removed the head bolts. In the end another student came along and got it off in one go, using a prybar on the head and engine stand. Ended up braking a headbolt the whole threaded part is in its hole welded in with rust.
Started cutting rust off the comanche, not as bad as I thought it would be on the backside (yes I'm going to drive around with massive holes cut in my truck bed until I can patch them, better than letting the rust spread, amirite? ;_;) But holy fucking loud I don't want to get tinnitus so I stopped and am now trying to find earplugs/muffs

It's like birds... Just more annoying.
heh. it looks pretty awful right now but whatever. shot some primer over the 'clean' shit for now, gonna order some patch panels and see about getting a welder.

I did the same on the old merc, just removed rust and then sealed it off until the weather was less damp. If it takes a while before you can repair it, then be really anal with the quality of your primer so you are absolutely sure there's no untreated metal visible.

Restored my bumpers today using a heatgun, it's so nice not having all of that grey plastic.
Restored my bumpers today using a heatgun, it's so nice not having all of that grey plastic.
wanna explain what you mean? does heat fix faded plastics or something?
wanna explain what you mean? does heat fix faded plastics or something?
I read online that if you go over all of the faded plastics using a heat-gun it melts the top layer and fixes the sun bleaching, and what do you know, it actually worked. Like this: [editline]19th February 2014[/editline] I'll take some pictures tomorrow to show what a difference it made.
I managed today to change both valve cover gaskets, which initially was a bitch because the injectors peek through the valve cover... Nedless to say that now the engine is clean as fuck, no more oil spill, and the camshafts are in quite a good condition, seeing that this engine has done over 360.000km now..

Took two years to find the parts for this. Online was $80+ shipping for an 8ft long box, i paid $35 for this+ a grille and misc other trim Before, no roof trim due to roof rack removal; [t]http://i.imgur.com/ssyqdfa.jpg[/t] Parts: top one is what i bought, made to go from bottom of windshield, all the way to the hatch. Bottom is old, goes from bottom of windshield to top of windshield [t]http://i.imgur.com/gHi5R4c.jpg[/t] End result; [t]http://i.imgur.com/Sdis5kU.jpg[/t] Very happy.
