I had to replace my fan clutch and a coolant hose today. I replaced the fan clutch twice, once because it stopped functioning and the second time because it was eating away at the coolant hose.
everything works fine now and is functioning properly.
here's an image of the hose that was replaced.
My DIY O2 Sensor thingy is actually working. Kinda surprised. Now I wish I knew the science behind it.
Don't look at me. I don't know.
Dyno scheduled for friday
Hope to god I have the time to install my 850cc... otherwise I will be disapointed
talked to the trans shop again
(Backstory - trans fucked up after I got it rebuilt, they have been beating around the bush for 3 weeks)
they got it to go into failsafe again after like 30 miles of driving
they are replacing a shift solenoid
but I don't know if that will fix my issues with the torque converter
dunno
will find out tomorrow
I didn't think 7's were THAT bad with problems
They're not, but the later model transmissions (5HP30 in particular) have all manner of valve body and internal solenoid issues... When they work, they're brilliant, but they always wind up needing a rebuild. Thankfully there are easy rebuild kits available and all you need is a workbench and some time to DIY. You would be amazed how completely DIY-friendly the Last Great 7 Series™ (E38) is.
Thankfully I've got a 5HP18 in mine with only 78k miles so nya nya
Don't worry dbk, once it's sorted that tranny will be good for another 150k miles easily if you keep the fluid and filter in check. If these guys do a proper job, the components they're replacing should be of a higher quality than what BMW used originally - that was a major weak point, poor quality internal components like check balls and really shitty springs :)
I have the 5hp24 w/the high stall torque converter
I'm just waiting for it to finally be fixed then it will be beating down the highway again :)
[editline]21st August 2013[/editline]
They used the proper rebuild kit with the higher quality stuff. They just keep telling me that things totally unrelated to the transmission are causing some weird shit to happen.
Like the torque converter that they replaced, when it goes into lockup the rpms fluctuate every 15-20 seconds 100-150rpms and makes a groaning noise. That screams lockup clutch in the TC to me, but they're like "uhh this car has a CANBUS system so the error code that your cooling fan is throwing could cause an on off lockup situation." *cough* bullshit *cough*
so I just got back from replacing the temp sensor #12 in the cooling loop that controls the fan speed, $35 easy fix...needed to be done anyway
now they need to replace the TC
hurray warrantied parts / labor!
Mothers BMW transmission broke down on her way to North Lake Tahoe (250+ miles away), it only goes into 3rd and 4th gear now. This is the second transmission this car has had problems with, and damn these things cost of money when the transmission goes out.
I spent $4,300 on a rebuild but it has a 5 year 67,000 mile warranty.
I'm in the home stretch - but I just want to get it home :(
tired of driving the Q5
its not nice to drive

An exciting life.
I want to do the sound system in my car, but I want to keep the factory head unit.
My bud had this done in his 02 530 - 1000watt amp, a 12 inch sub replaced all the innards, but kept the factory BMW head unit.
Very well done job. Will be 100x more difficult on my car - I have DSP and the BMW NAV system.
You're going to need a sound processor if you hope to have any chance of it sounding good. A good processor will not only sum frequencies, but will smooth out the music to make it sound right. You run the BMW's internally crossed over channels into the unit.. RCAs out to amps, then amps to speaker wires. Not too bad, honestly.
Look into one of these:
JBL MS8
Audison Bit-One (very intense programming to make it operate properly)
Kicker Sum8 (not a processor, really.. just a summing device)
Rockford 3Sixty.3
It'll render the DSP portion of the factory system useless, you'll want to keep that flat and do all adjustments from the sound processor, basically.
Get planning ;)

I want to work on the sound system in my car, but on a smaller scale. Like, a 1 DIN head unit and some decent two way 6x9s. I dont want a sub, but I want it to sound good quality. Do most aftermarket head units process sound nicely, or should I look for something specificly?
Pretty much any aftermarket headunit worth it's snuff has a good enough processor in it to get the job done.. and for less than $200 you can get one with bluetooth, wireless A2DP audio streaming via that bluetooth, USB input, color change, CD, etc.. pretty much all the goodies you could want unless there's specific tasks in mind.
Do you want any amount of bass? Even without a sub given a proper setup we can get good response from like 50Hz on up.
What kind of car?
And are you in the US? Genres of music you like?
Opinion on bright treble.. like it? Or does it hurt?
Also, approx budget?
I'll recommend some goods for ya based on that stuff if you'd like!

I like bass, I just dont have the budget for an amp and sub.
2010 crown vic
I live in murrica, I like mostly electronic (I detest anything dubstep related) and rock.
I like treble just a little less than the bass. I like it good and bright, but not too overpowering.
Probably $200 to $350, and probably not all at once, Ill get the head unit first and speakers later on another paycheck. I dont have any desire for bluetooth capability, just as long as it has aux input, usb input, and sounds good.
Also, I work at best buy, so I can get employee discounts on the stuff they have there.

Hahaha, excellent. One of my best friends' little brother works in the car audio part of BB here, but I wouldnt trust him to pick out matching socks, let alone some speakers.
Shame that there's dopes that aren't any good at their job in the bay. Would you be plannin on gettin a sub someday in the future when funds allow?
Probably not, even if I had the money for it, it wouldnt really be worth it as much as other things.
Bought some wheels for the E30.

Just happy God gave me the chance to build something fun like this. Dodged death repeatedly over the course of this build; so many life changing events. It's just nice to see something physical to ground my reality back to earth. Sometimes time and days just slip away into months and years; I like having this hunk of metal to remind me of the memories I've had. Eh.
quick super_noodle unleash your inner r/atheism on him for saying god!
also what the fuck i seriously thought 240s had inline sixes... lol
