No pics of it yet, but I fabricated a strut brace for my Chrysler today. It spans the engine bay just in front of the air cleaner and anchors at the fender bolts on either side. Since I have torsion bars, and therefore no strut towers, I'm not entirely sure it does anything. But, it was fun to build anyway. My welding class started yesterday and I'm starting to get a handle on MIG welding, so I'm looking for any excuse to weld anything. I also built a grill-like work surface with a tab on the side for the ground clamp so I can weld small things without having to worry about grounding them.
[t]https://dl.dropbox.com/u/1031910/VW%20Beetle/2013-03-20%2015.27.07.jpg[/t] Put it back together. Tomorrow It MIGHT make it back into the beetle. Also how important are gaskets that go around the jugs? I've seen some VW's have them, but mine doesn't have them... Let's hope something doesn't not leak. [editline] fgklnf [/editline] Also I LOVE rubber mallets! Any pacific tool people use to beat pistons out of the ring compressor and into the block? I just used a rubber mallet + a long ass 1/4" extension.
Rubber mallet and a small block of 2x4, personally. Maybe a wooden hammer handle.

Got my new front bumper yesterday. Time to convert the garage into a paintshop. http://www.scstyling.com/pub_images/original/sa950501202_2043.jpg Wont let me img-tag it :s
Put in my new steering rack. So far, it seems to have helped a lot, but theres a few other issues that are majorly hurting my steering. The steering coupler ( from my steering rack to steering column) has a knock in it and play in it, the right outer tie rod has a small amount of play, and my back left tire is toed in .35° too much (supposed to be .10°) The tie rods are a simple job, $60 for 2 Moog ones that ive heard are good quality. The back left tire cant be aligned right now, the alignment bolt is stuck. Im looking into ordering a new bushing, bolt, etc. and replacing it. The steering coupler.. no one makes them except Subaru for $115ish, i cant even find a gc one on ebay. Ive tried the wd40 trick on it, it hasnt helped. Might try the junkyard, but not looking forward to trying to get that out
I installed a device to show my support for a local company.

Replaced the air filter on the F150 cause I was bored. And then forgot to throw the old one out and closed it under the hood. Took two of us laying on the hood while someone fiddled with the latch to open it again. Woops.
Beetle now runs. All 4 cylinders are hitting. Now to fix the brakes, shifter, speedo and some suspension work. I already want a roof rack ;_;
This is my strut brace I was talking about. It might generally stiffen the body a little bit, but I doubt I'll actually feel anything. Fun to build, though, and I can't wait to do subframe connectors.

I don't think it would effect chassis flex because the body isn't the chassis lol.. I have no idea how you'd attempt to do anything like that for anything other than cosmetics. Maybe you could figure out a way to stiffen up the chassis underneath and double it up as a skidplate/bellypan/diffuser/areonamics magic plate?
I thought strut braces were supposed to connect and go between the strut towers, that looks like it is just bolted to the fenders.
What strut towers? It has torsion bars, there are no strut towers. And yes, it is bolted right to the fenders. If it affects anything it's purely body flex, and just the front of the body at that. I built it because I had material lying around, and I was looking at the engine bay the other day thinking "Now, what would happen if I..." I figured it was worth a shot to see if it made any difference or not. It's a unibody car, but I'm pretty sure the structural part of the body ends at the firewall, everything forward of that is basically hung on the frame rails. The suspension and such all mounts to the frame rails and/or subframe, hence no reinforced shock towers. Honestly, the first time it gets in my way working on something, I'll probably carve it up and turn it into something else. It's an excuse to break out the welder again
Saturate it in PB Blaster, wait a day and try again. Its stuck and has a fair amount of rust. The bushing and bolt is maybe $30
What did you work on v. "My beer is better than yours!"
What did you work on v. "My beer is better than yours!"
This subforum is a place for men. And men drink beer. The stigma of working on cars and drinking beers is a legacy we must uphold.
If that's how we're doing it [t]http://exportdiplomatic.com/dutyfree/media/catalog/product/cache/4/image/5e06319eda06f020e43594a9c230972d/6/9/6904721.jpg[/t]
Fuck me, the one time I drank a 40 of San Miguel I made the horrible decision of taking two shots of tequila with it. I tossed my cookies (out my nose) for days.
I haven't thrown up from drinking in at least a while, last time I did I brought a bottle of Russian Standard to a house party. Hardly remember anything from it apart from hitting on the hosts sister and throwing up blue stuff... I guess I've just learnt my limits :v:
Now that you have learnt them you can break them more easily !
went out and started the old girl up.. fired right up..

Had a brief discussion a while back with someone regarding installing a humidor in their E38. I converted my rear armrest into a drinks container, but I think the humidor idea would actually be far more visually appealing. Am seriously considering giving it a shot, I've got all the materials on hand and woodwork is one of the few things I'm actually very good at. Something like this is what I'd be aiming for; I've got all sorts of cedar and mahogany cuts at home to use, and the accessory parts (charcoal vent, chrome / gold trim etc etc) are easy to get. The problem with my drinks container is I don't drink at all, and I wouldn't let someone drink in my car. Plus it comes across a bit silly sometimes despite looking cool. I do however have a whole box of proper cuban cigars I was given some time back, and a humidor like that in a matching woodgrain to the rest of the car, even devoid of cigars, would just look stunning. Too many ideas, not enough practicality :P On another note, the larger intake manifold and throttle body are on their way so I'll install those next week. Awesome.

I was given a box of 'Romeos No. 2 de Luxe' (Romeo y Julietas), which so far I've been told are pretty good cigars. I also don't smoke, but I do love the smell of them and the kind of people I would have in my car are more likely to appreciate a good cigar than a bottle of grog...
