Music is art. Painting is art. Literature is art.
You don't see people saying "music is art but its like ear art", or "literature is art, but like more imaginative". You have to look at video games as the art form that they are.
I recently was obsessed with pokemon and was constantly thinking about what moves I needed to teach my pokemon, which ones I was going to try and catch next, regardless of the fact that they are literally made up of just lines of code. It's so insane how deep video games are as an art form but people just don't look at it that way.
Who wouldn't think video games are art?

Video games are, by the very definition (Or at least Googles), art. No matter how bad they may be, they'll just be bad art.

Just reading some of that Wikipedia page made me want to punch him in the face.
Of course it is. Why wouldn't it?
they can be art but the purpose of most games is to entertain people, not to be a work of creative expression by their creators. Most indie games can be called art, but stuff like COD, Madden etc. which are just made every year to turn a profit are just games.
Yeah, all games can be considered art.
Especially old 8 bit games, where 8 bit was so iconic it developed into an art style.
And my avatar for instance, Symphony of The Night is one big awesome art piece to marvel at.

Art isn't just creative expression. Games like CoD are art, just bad art, but regardless, bad art is still art.
Ye.
Yeah it's art to be honest this is a stupid question.
I'd say games like LIMBO is artistic

He tried to get into games but people who tried to introduce him to the medium handed him some Japanese RPG that requires 20 hours of grinding.

Jesus, at least start of with Super Mario Bros., it's simplistic enough for anyone.

I don't even know why he would come out with that statement in the first place, it seems like he had too much of a lack of experience with videogames and the industry to try and make that claim!

I would have handed him something similar to film like Heavy rain or Telltales:The Walking Dead.
That or not really care about his opinion on games.
In my own opinion, I think that videogames are art because it takes imagination, timing and creativity in order to build something for your game world such as character development, in-game environment, weaponry, etc etc. All videogames are a form of art and differ to eachother in some way.
While I don't think a game itself is necessarily an art piece, it is comprised of thousands of individual pieces of artwork.
I think of them more as large compilations of literary and artistic content.

The same thing could be said about film.

Games are obviously art.
Right, anything can be considered art by anyone. Now whether that art is considered by the majority good or bad is an entirely different thing.
video games with the focus being on artistic expression aren't too common, but they're all art in the most broad sense.
the best example i can think of is braid. a lot of people think it's pretentious but it's a really good example of how video games can be art in a way that's exclusive to video games. if you tried to convert braid into a book or a film or anything it wouldn't work, but something like metal gear solid might.
if movies are art, games should be aswell, and with more reasons.
I think there are enough videos games that i can call art, or say have artistic value, i just don't think video games, now, can be considered art in terms of medium.

He's from a generation who doesn't know a whole lot about video games. He also said he thinks video games can be art, it'll just take while for the medium to get to that point.

Just because a game looks good or is presented well doesn't mean it's art. There are plenty of "art" films that are terrible.
Speaking of, Trine 2 is a great game, but is more of a well crafted action/adventure game than something that can be considered art.
I think it's alright to consider it as an art.
I think any creative output that has a use beyond pure functionality can be considered art
so, yes
Yes, but many developers fail to do it properly.
Yes, you have to wade through the shit to get to the quality works. Like almost any other medium.
Also I just finished Journey today. Really opened my eyes to what a game could achieve.
