I listened to more of catch 33, I'm still not feeling it.
However, when I finish playing guitar I'm going to listen to another album in detail, perhaps obzen.
I really want to like these guys, more than most other bands that people suggest to me.
But yeah, gonna keep trying
obZen is a little bit more accessible than Catch 33 in my opinion, but it's still full of Messugah-y goodness- It's what got me into them.
Actually, Chaosphere might be better, it was made during the transition phase from thrash to whatever they are now, so it kind of blends the wild technical side with a more straight up sound.
well then, I guess it's a good stepping stone.

All I have to say in that regard.
The ending riff in that song is the HARDEST RIFF KNOWN TO MAN

What the fuck did I just read? :byodood:
Check out Nothing, albums fucking godly, and definitely Destroy Erase Improve.

And cause it's a death metal thread, more brutal death :v:

Am I the only one that hears loads of chug-chug-chug riffs in Meshuggah? I'm not saying they're bad, but honestly, considering how acclaimed they are for originality, it came as a bit of a surprise to me :v:.

They invented the 'chug-chug-chug' stuff, I don't see why they're not allowed to use it. They've used it on almost every album but still every album sounds so different.

Cause they actually changed the chugga chugga riffs, now its stuff like chugchugchug chugga chugga chug.
:v:
And they're awesome stop bitching :colbert:

Their originality doesn't come from what they do, so much as how they do it. Metal has had hundreds of bands who have made a career out of just wailing on powerchords with low tuned guitars, but none of them really made use of polyrhythms and polytonality the way that Meshuggah have opened up
Kind of off topic but I'm pretty bummed Pete Sandoval won't be on the new Morbid Angel album, but I'm sure the new drummer won't have a problem taking his place for this album.
To try and get a discussion going. What's your Top 3 favourite DM bands? And why?
1. Nile. I completely adore the scale they're using. Along with the heavy riffs and extraordinary vocals. The lyrics really tells a story which makes it even more interesting.
2. Aborted. Sven's vocals is the meatiest I've ever heard. Extremely heavy tracks.
3. Fleshgod Apocalypse. Mindblowing music. Great vocals. And they really got a twist in some of their songs. I'll give you an example instead.
As Tyrants Fall.

I listen to these guys purely because of the drumming and how heavy their riffs are.

Oh that's such a great video and song. You can't help but headbang along to it.
Assuming melodic death metal is allowed in this thread, going off Kazumi's discussion-starter:
1. Path of Golconda. They simply have no comparison. Their vocals are so deep and violent, and yet so beautiful and sexy - they're not drowning-man like Nile or Necrophagist, but they sound like they could so easily become them. Their lyrics are fucking novels - for each song. You have to stop and think about the lyrics, sometimes for a long time, to truly grasp what the song is about. The lyrics and vocals aren't just thrown over the instrumentation to make noise and compliment the instrumentation - no, the instrumentation is layered beneath the lyrics to further convey the story. Each instrument's role is a carefully crafted composition, each a key player in the story being told. The dynamics can't be described in English - maybe some of you non-English-speakers can try and describe them, because I certainly can't.

(Just listen at 1:30; the phrase that starts "Never have I seen". It's just orgasmic. :byodood:. Though you should listen to the whole song.)

2. Fractal Gates. Progressive melodic death/doom. Do I really need to say anything beyond that? I do? Okay. Their debut album, Altered State of Consciousness is all science- and space-based. That right there is fucking epic. In addition, they're fucking intense - in between the Goliath chugging and pounding riffs they have cool spacey riffs (yes, I said riffs, not keyboards) going left and right. You can be entertained for hours.
I mean, honestly, just listen to the intro of this song.

Yeah, you hear those intro vocals? Those aren't a man. No. That's a fucking dragon.

3. Divinity. These guys are plain awesome. Their primary vocals are thrash/groove hardcore barks dueling with deep growls, though they occasionally use some interesting clean vocals. The lyrics of their sophomore album, The Singularity are somewhat interesting - they kind of mix philosophy, mysticism, and science/science-fiction together. I enjoy them.
Probably my favorite part about them though is that they purposely throw you off-track. There will be parts which you would put money down on will be repeated as a chorus, but you only hear it once and that's it. There are phrases that are written in such a way that you think they'd be rhyming and very rhythmic, but they'll intentionally break it up and make it arhythmic - which really pulls you in in case you were zoning out. Then there will be parts that are building up to a solo, building, building, here it comes.... bam! Just another phrase. Then you'll just be sitting there, zoning out, and then suddenly, without warning, SOLO!
They're an amazing band. They keep you on your feet very well.

I'm surprised I haven't seen Cannibal Corpse at all in this thread.
Cannibal Corpse - Stripped, Raped, and Strangled

Dying Fetus - Homicidal Retribution

Devourment - Postmortal Coprophagia

Cattle Decapitation - Unintelligent Design

The next two could be considered somewhat Death Metal.
Gojira - Toxic Garbage Island

Between the Buried and Me - Selkies: The Endless Obsession

Why would Gojira not be classed as death metal, they are heavy as fuck and have a pretty death metal based sound.
Vocals, I guess. They don't sound like your usual growls.
And if you like Gojira, you'll love Obituary :frogc00l:

Seriously fucking badass heavy riffs, and the vocals are fucking brutal.
Why would Gojira not be classed as death metal, they are heavy as fuck and have a pretty death metal based sound.
They're pretty much DM with hardcore vocals instead of growls.
[editline]04:30PM[/editline]
So basically what he already said...
Yeah that's my point, and they are fucking glorious.
If I passed my exams I would have saw them this year!! :argh:
I really just had a mind crash... I had something intelligent to say, but now I can't remember it. :frown:
[editline]04:32PM[/editline]
In regards to Gojira's classification as DM, that is.

I have to say, this is probably one of the best songs to kick off your career as a band ever. The folky slow riff is actually just an intro song but the guy decided to put it in with the first proper song off the album. It's from Amorphis' first album, where they were Death/doom with folk influence. Gotta say, it is one Hell of a debut. Their second album was of a similar style, but it had more melodic death influence.
And here's a song from the second album.

Summer school?
Nah uni resit, fucking raging it's my family luck.
Seriously, out of every day of the year that they could have chosen for my resit its August the 14th.
Bloodstock starts on the 13th and ends on the 15th.
Bloodstock has Opeth, Meshuggah, Devin Townsend, Gojira, Bloodbath, Cannibal Corpse and Fear Factory.
I almost had a rage induced seizure when I couldn't go.
BLASGHKRJHAGSORJBASLGSBF
i feel your pain
Fuck man that sucks so much
I want to go to Bloodstock as well, but so far I'm not allowed, cos my parents don't like the music. my stepdad's a metalhead but he's not really into the extreme subgenres and so doesn't want to go, meaning I can't since I'd like die or not get there or not get back etc if I went on my own, since I live in Scotland and it's in England.
I've not attempted in a while
Maybe if I try and show him some of the band he might like rather than those he probably won't he'll change his mind :v:
See I would perform morally questionable acts if it meant I could go.
And where bouts do ya stay I'm a weegie myself
As would I. Perhaps morally acceptable acts could increase my chances :buddy:
And, a fellow Scot! :buddy: I myself am from Edinburgh :P
I want to be Scottish too
Scotland is good we have cool heritage, beautiful landscape and Alestorm
Everyone wants to be scottish, we're awesome :coolfish:
And weegies are better :smug:
