So I started to draw Guy Pearce, but this guy doesn't look like Guy Pearce at all, so no tattoos for him.

but you can still tell its a memento still so u might as well have drawn that tats
i could tell it was him.
Just got started on Neil DeGrasse Tyson. Gonna draw an approving Carl Sagan ghost by his shoulder perhaps.

Since last time when I painted Liara I learned some tips on the nose, so now that part turned out much better.
hey guys I found a nice and simple composition reference

but seriously how many of you really pay attention to comp, and what do you like to focus on? As a photographer, rule of thirds is bashed into my head but I know there's lots of stuff like that Fibonacci spiral and lesser used things like the triangles/diagonals you find in photoshop's guides

As a photographer, though I've got all the rules you mentioned in my head, I tend to not think of them. Not because I don't remember there and then, but because it's freeing to compose without them.
When I compose, I think action. Motion. Where the eyes land and where they are lead. What the brightest and darkest contrasts are and how they affect my eye. Typically I go for smooth leading lines creating a motion of leading towards the eye, like when I took this;
[img_thumb]http://dl.dropbox.com/u/1467131/Gayranger/Geiranger_5.jpg[/img_thumb]
I wanted the eye to run with the water until it hit the contrast of the umbrellawoman.
But when I paint people I typically think 'dramatic' - are they powerful or weak? Good of evil? And from that I decide perspective and motive around them.
Unless I'm making a documentary, taking a portrait or some boring stuff like that I tend to avoid the general rules and imagine how my image looks in my head - and what emotions that composition brings forward before I paint, for better or worse. (see example above yours)
Maybe not the tips a professional'd give you but that is my point of view either way.
here's what i do to make sure my compositions have that honest, candid feel:
get drunk
take pictures
[editline]5th April 2012[/editline]
it really does work for me
Composition is really subjective. What works for one image or subject may not work for another.
Composition can really define the style of your image, in some cases. I have a friend who drew up an image of a tiger using the golden ratio and circles and by simply using that the image took on a very oriental feel.
I tend to go for looser, more basic compositions.
Still a lot to learn though.
[editline]5th April 2012[/editline]
Also;
getting involved with an animation project with a classmate. We'll be collabing with him doing the actual character drawing and motion and me doing the backgrounds and helping out with colouring. I THINK. We haven't ironed out roles yet but I'm pretty excited

In my opinion the most important things in creating a composition is balance, a hierarchy of focal points, and readability. I'm sure as a photographer you understand balancing in composition, basically don't have any one side of the image be too heavy or light, or too distracting etc. Have enough going on subtly to keep your eye moving throughout the piece and not bore the viewer or just keep their eyes stuck in just one part of the composition..
This leads into the hierarchy of focals.. Compositing where you want your viewer to look first, second, third etc..
IE: something like having your strongest contrast of lights and darks and color and detail be around a person pointing a gun, so as soon as your viewer looks at the painting, his eyes dart to the most interesting/contrasted area which is the gun. Then you could have a sharp trail of smoke pulling away from the gun subtly leading the viewers eyes to the victim across the painting as the second focal point.. having the victim have less contrast and detail than the original gun wielding focal point.. Then maybe an even subtler gun in hand of the victim with just a glint of contrast to pull you away from the second focal point into the final third..
This is an interesting way of story telling. Just being able to control your viewers eyes as they navigate around your painting telling them a story as they move a long is a useful skill to master in both painting and photography.
And readability is a simple enough concept, is your painting readable? Can people understand what they are looking at? Readability is best accomplished during the thumbnail stage of designing a scene, if in a small 2x2 inch thumbnail you can understand what's going on, it's going to work really well and even better once blown up to full size.
Also just messing around in flash for a couple of minutes.

yeah, in photography I'm often faced with the simpler challenge of what objects are at my disposal or in the way, where could I move to manipulate the view to something more interesting and so on, but I'm finding that now I'm trying to do some scene work, I'm toying with some what-if thoughts I'm realizing fast that I need to think a lot more critically and it's bugging me.

"Paint" usually implies the legwork of the piece was done by painting. If you've got a really busy line drawing before you start, then you'll be "colouring" it :v:
Apologies Commander Buzzkill, I'll get right back to work on forward shields. We have a problem though Commander, the generators for weapons systems seem to be disabled because of lack of "humour". What should we do?

(this last image is bigger, i had to reduce the quality tenfold to uplaod it.)
I was inspired by dragon masks from bhutan and made this:

The mask part looks a tad flat and the hands look a bit ill-defined, but I really like it. The shading on the gold accents is awesome!
Tried my hand at drawing with a tablet last night. Here was the result.

Thumbnailing could help a lot.. even with photography, just jot down loads of different value based compositions in tiny 2x2 inch squares, constantly making changes to the scenery/composition from thumbnail to thumbnail until you eventually reach something you find satisfactory. They shouldn't take more than 2 minutes each. Then you blow the one you like up, and make several adjustments to it until the composition is perfect. Then you should be good to go with rendering out the painting and not needing to worry about the composition anymore. So you'd be a lot more relaxed while just painting, instead of still worrying about composition too much while your in mid painting.
This weeks teen challenge thing on conceptart is "Devil" and I'm not getting any feedback on my
design so maybe you guys can give me some opinions

The idea is that the devil twines around the victim's body, attaches the strings and puppeteers
the victim around to do evil stuff.
Kind of reminds me of Brutes in ME3 that have lost weight.
Especially the head.

Oh cool I guess. I haven't played ME3 so that's unintentional.
i would make something with broader shoulders, much more intimidating that way, looks more powerful

I would say Fibonacci and Phi is just as important as the rule of thirds.
If you look at any kind of visual, three dimensional, or even musical art that has been marveled at for ever, it most likely holds elements of Phi.
Interesting video on Phi and Fibonacci in art and nature:

Remember: draw what you see, not what you think you should see.
Took about 15-20 minutes, no preparatory sketching.

Just trying to help you get integrated into FP, new blood
There's nothing humorous about unnecessarily posting the source to any jokes or references people make just because you know them
It's awkward, superfluous and attention-seeking
I don't even know why I'm going into it so far, it ought to be obvious
Just be chill ok

I like the weird ostrich vibe
I also think it's a good idea to keep him creepy and spindly rather than broad and powerful as has been suggested
To that end I would make the arms less thick and human looking, make the torso more emaciated (extreme definition of the ribs would be good) and give him very long bowed legs, maybe even reversed ostrich legs ending in hooves or something. I don't know, that's just the direction I would experiment in
good luck

Just pulled the mold off (sounds easier than it was) for my concrete and rebar coffee table. Excuse the bad picture, didn't have access to my camera at the shop. I'm super excited that it came out looking really nicely. Next step is to let it cure for a week outside the mold, it will lighten up in color and harden a bit over that week, then I get to seal it which will make it look darker and appear slightly wet. In the meantime I'm going to get a piece of 3/8th glass made for the table top and polish up the legs which will end up being close to a mirror finish.
That's pretty fucking clever.
Wait till my cog-tree coffee table is finished, though.
