Pencil holding (like most things) comes under 'do what works for you'. Same with paint brush holding.
I WILL SAY THIS, however, and that is that some methods of holding a pencil may be more 'healthy' than others. I say this because I spent the last 3 days doing roughly 8 hours a day of drawing on a Graphire 4 tablet and now it hurts a bit to move my right hand in certain ways.
I'm no doctor but I don't want no RSI up in this business. Can anybody else shed some light on this?
This is not a 'Help me Doctor Facepunch post but rather a 'let's talk about RSI for the good of everybody' post. If the pain is still there on Monday I will hit up my doctor about it
The bank note thing? That was just an example of the "following the flow" part
What I meant was it's not hatching if you're following contours, hatching means straight lines
also I've been told to draw it with this hand position

I would use that grip for drawing upright, I.E on an easel.
tbh I found the specifics of the grip to be the most subjective thing there is, my only advice would just be to use light strokes and hold the pencil a bit further back, everything else is up to his comfort
Aye, but I think it's always helpful to get insights into what works for someone else. For example I probably won't follow Lazy's workflow to the letter, but it could influence the way I do things when I try the methods he described. People's art styles are for the most part a composite of influences after all

Thanks for the crit, and thanks a lot for the hair advice <3

I find it funny that there's more Teen Deer fanart than there are actual pieces made by Detlef.

Detlef's are generally much higher quality in terms of character design and plot development. Most of mine are just deer puns
real question was the toon shaded render of teen deer i posted creepy or something? im planning on lighting it with subsurface scattering to look like vinyl

What happened to Detlef anyway? She updates her DA, but she never posts here no more D:

she decided that, whether you meant it or not, a lot of the comments here were demoralizing. rather than argue whose fault that was, she decided to take a break from here and see how that goes.
yeah now she posts on dA only. How surprising.
I still have a grudge about that, mostly because she told me privately, 2 days earlier before that drama on this same thread, that I should work better and harder than usual.
She was entirely right about the 'I should practise way more and stop using my style a bit' part and I won't argue that, but it's more her "rage-quitting" (that happened just after) I am upset about, especially from someone who I consider to be really good and has a huge potential.
i rage quit all the time in video games i have zero tolerance for failure!!!
i rage quit all the time in video games i have zero tolerance for failure!!!
wat
What I meant is that she loses some of her credibility to me, by completely overreacting
Especially considering she is the kind of person of being as 'harsh' as us, when it comes to critiques/comments.
You guys DO know that there are FAR better art communities out there then CC and where you can, you know, get feedback from talented people who does it for a living and so on? Communities that focuses on creating art and growing as an artist and doesn't focus on creating drama? Not saying that about all the users, but some sure are more interested in that then actually posting art.

Okidoki! I'm glad to! Here's a list of non-drama art communities that focuses on art instead of drama:
CGHUB
Crimson Daggers
Conceptart.org
artgrounds
tsofa.com (the society of figurative art, one of my favorites)
wecoockart.com
Seriously, joining one of them is like enough since you get so much feedback from so many artists on those sites.
ah thank you

Something I have to do for school.
Any feedback?

Concept Art is good, but you get rarely help from there if you're not really known, or you don't update your thread regularly.
CGHub is the Concept 2.0, where every good old artists left CA because of some major drama that happened 2 years ago and people migrated to CGHub instead.
I don't know about the others websites though.

And that makes the CC better? Please, just because of the algenpfleger-drama that happened over there (which is totally unlike the kind of nonsensical minuscular drama that some of you guys cook up here, look it up) doesn't mean that it's not a much better art-community. And that was the point if you missed it.
ah thank you
You're welcome!
Never said CC was better than any of art websites.
I personally look up at posting my stuff on CA/CGHub, though I won't rely on them too much (unless I got any kind of useful feedback/advices)
i know i'm a bit late here and i'm going to ignore the discussion of "THIS WEBSITE IS BETTER THAN THAT WEBSITE"
but i find it hilariously ironic that detlef was the primary poster and advocate of the "DA is shit. tom preston is shit. everyone on that site is shit. they can't handle criticism" thread but then when she got recognised on there she ditched us because she couldn't handle criticism lmao
tom preston mk2 minus the small penis
except i dont see how thats at all accurate? she didnt leave because she 'got recognised' nor did she leave because she cant handle critisism. she left because often the criticism was delivered with a heapful of negativity much like you're displaying now. she still gets plenty of cc from plenty of other places (not da). i know i'm fanning the flames but you're just being ridiculous, she's not even here nor did she make some grand exit or anything, she just left because she wanted to and you're still being shitty about it.
being an absolute tool spawns negativity
that's about it
being an absolute tool spawns negativity
that's about it
how is this acceptable? say what you want about detlefs frankness in her cc's but that's nothing compared to the posts you're making toward her
ChestyMcGee and ADT's current behavior right now is a clear reason for why Detlef left.
I mean, she's not even here anymore, left in a mature way without causing drama and we've already discussed Detlef upside down and inside out in the past and yet you still feel like shit talking about her.
Just give it a rest will you?
Yes. Get over it. Do something productive for once.
This is turning into a regular Melrose Place.
Can't we just not take negativity on the internet seriously and understand that nothing said here really matters? I mean maybe I have the wrong idea, but it's always been my understanding that the internet sort of generates negativity by nature and it's best to just ignore it so as not to stoke up the drama flames.
I mean, I get where all of you guys are coming from, but seriously, it's the internet.
[editline]20th April 2012[/editline]
I think something that needs to be recognized is that to most people all Detlef is is a voice of negativity. For a lot of people the only things they've ever seen out of her are insults and sarcasm.
There's no voice to attach her to, no tone or inflection to glean her motives from. So, yeah, to those of you that actually know her what she says doesn't have quite the bite that it does to everyone else.
It's a simple issue of perspective and expecting it to not come up in a purely information based communication medium is naive, and expecting people to see things from your perspective when they don't have the benefit of your perspective is also naive.
I don't think people being harsh causes drama
I think people giving a fuck too much and too often causes it
Yes. Get over it. Do something productive for once.
For someone on a high horse about pure artistic communities without the friction, you are one pissy motherfucker

This got nothing to do about high-horses. I only act like this towards those I see only posting this complaining-drama-shit and nothing else for a long while, in order to get them to do something else in what is supposed to be a thread about productivity in art.
