I like way you render out your landscapes, always has a very nice feel to it..
Couple of things I'd like to suggest though if you don't mind.. The tree seems to be a vital part of the story telling, it's a piece of nature amidst a series of tech orientated objects, so our eyes automatically run to that as the mains story telling focus of the painting.. However it being cropped up like that kind of makes it annoying to look at because it feels like we're missing out on something important up there. I'd suggest pulling the crop up a bit. at least to the point where you can see the top of the tree.. You even have leaves blowing from the top of the tree, so we follow the trail of leaves all the way up and it just takes us out of the painting, instead of to the tree because the tree is cropped off..
Also is that a dude chilling in a canoe on the ledge there? I was gonna suggest have someone eating an apple or something while chilling under the tree enjoying the view.. but you seem to already have a similar idea down elsewhere.
Also instead of having the leaves blow flatly across the screen, have them blow off into the distance getting smaller as the go farther back, this'll be good way to add more depth to your painting. Also another way to add depth would be instead of having that black pipe pop out directly horizontally, have it come out at a 3/4 angle of the building towards the camera.. it's harder to draw but the pay off will be worth it having just another indicator of depth in the painting.. Because right now you need as much depth as you can add into the piece.. the background land is pretty flat because its all almost one value, have it fade into the background with atmospheric perspective a lot more than what it's doing now. Also lighten up the midtone values of the buildings in the far right to a lighter grey than that dark grey, to push it further back, adding even more depth to your painting.
Another way to show depth would be clouds, properly draw out some cloud shapes going from small to large as they get closer in the sky and you'll have added some more illusion of depth to the piece..

Thanks for the critique mate!
Yeah the tree was a pretty important part - I'd considered the composition in terms of leading the eye but I hadn't really thought about the tree's proximity to the edge. I'll try out some alternate cropping/extensions and see what happens
Yup, that's a dude in a boat. It's supposed to be one of those row-boats, although it's not all that obvious. It's also supposed to be two people - a couple - on some sort of date. I'll make sure it looks proper before the end.
Due to the viewing angle I used the reflected light low-down on the wall beside the boat to suggest water and I'm going to use that distant, lower down tower to support that.
I hadn't thought about having the leaves blow into the distance! I thought they looked a bit odd and I was thinking that it was a colour issue. I'll sus out that scale problem.
The background was an issue because the viewing angle is from such a high elevation that the land is already pretty faded, even at the point where it's closest to the camera. I'll check out a few more reference photos (I think I have some of my own) to get it looking right.
Thanks again

Regarding the rust I haven't really thought about a state of disrepair for the tower yet. I'm not entirely sure what 'mood' I want to set for the technological side of things - sophisticated and well-maintained or ageing and redundant. I'm thinking more sophisticated and maintained, but then the sense of isolation/lonliness/'escape' experienced by the figures is less strong.
Unless the maintainers are robots.

someone let me know if you find this useful, I've been painting mostly in SAI since I do lots of linework, but I'd like to get back into using photoshop for more advanced brushwork again. Maybe form a symbiotic relationship between lines in SAI and color in PS.
one thing that bothers me in trying to use PS after being so used to SAI is the fucking control. I'm so used to all of the little shortcuts and quick fiddlybits I can do, but things like color picking and changing brush size feel so god damn clunky when you have to go through several clicks just to do so
Yeah I'm back in Photoshop now purely for brushes. So much easier to quickly create surfaces and clouds and whatnot with Photoshop's brush system.

BUT NIGGA YOU GON' BE HAPPY TODAY
-Square brackets for changing brush size (although this sometimes has a cry and doesn't work, especially if a drop down box is highlighted)
-Shift+alt+right click to bring up an on-screen colour picker. You don't need to hold shift+alt once it's on screen. You do need to hold right click though. To 'free' the control and allow you to move the mouse between the colour ring and the saturation/value square hold space. As soon as you release right click it goes away again. Feels a bit weird at first but you get used to it really fast. Sometimes, at the start of a Photoshop session, this won't work. Use the following alt+right click system and and it should fix it.
-Alt+right click to change brush size on screen. Move the cursor horizontally to change size and vertically to change softness.
-Hit numbers 1-0 change opacity of the brush at any point (1=10%, 0=100%) and use a modifier (shift or alt or ctrl, not sure which) to change flow instead.

Gave animating a try. I need a projector really bad.
Mirror effect because I'm cheap and an asshole and my video camera sucks.
I suck at mastering, so the music is shit E.
It's a remix of a Bollywood film song.
I edited this 5 times, I'm a real dunce.
I'm not putting myself down to get good criticism, that's how I actually feel.

Gonna shift the distant city left a bit, shift the tower right a bit.
Not sure how I feel about it - feels a lot emptier and less 'cosy' than before, but I think I can make it work.

Seems emptier and less detailed now

It's a work in progress texture I'm making for a source map.
There will be many of the same style, which will probably be blended via displacement.

What IS going on with the figure there
Also I'm not sure at all about the perspective of the second tower hidden down there, nor of its invading that nice negative space under the lip of the first
[editline]12th May 2012[/editline]
Making it more spacious is appropriate though, I like that
Figures are supposed to be in a row-boat, but it's not very obvious - still working on fixing that
Shifted the two main bits (the tower and the city) a bit closer to center, added detail, still fiddling with HSV values for the low down towers, playing around with taller towers and the haze/colouring of them
I'm thinking maybe the version with the city and tower hovering at the edges of the image was a bit better, hmm
Edit: forgot to include the pink sky-glow in the previous version

the color picker is kinda wonky, but still cool. I think the brush resizing just made my day though
You can change the colour picker style in the options, under HUD Colour Picker. Remember the 'hold spacebar' trick and you'll get the hang of it

It's nice though.
I love it, way closer to your original than the previous version
What's that weird grid filter thing though, it's pretty inappropriate for something composed entirely of smooth flesh and shiny intestines and shit
I always want to draw stuff like this after playing a bunch of Stalker

It's good progress for learning. I would suggest finding a way to give it some more dimension though as it looks very 2D to me.
Also the clouds seem kind of funky.

True. The lighting is incorrect in most places, and clouds are really square-ish.
