Why do you want to put it in your portfolio
It's only vaguely convincing if you half-close your eyes, the parts you actually painted are very poor
Besides, compositing photos into a piece CAN look amazing if it's done right, but always at the price of artistic integrity.
I think he should work on it a bit more. Make it more of a matte painting than it already is.
The contrast and colour ranges could be changed as well.
Look at the work of this guy http://www.christianlorenzscheurer.com/htmlpages/htmlmenue/enviroments_menue.html

artistic integrity? hardly
It's a perfectly legitimate method of creating an image.
Oil paints on 18" x 24" canvas

this is going to sound like im whining but i really need help with my art, i feel like im stuck. i dont know what to do next, or what to practice. I feel like i've gotten worse, I can't even finish a photostudy. Those bargue plate drawings are fine because I know the process, but when I try to do anything else I end up just staring at a blank page like "uhh what now".
paint a painting (ie not a study), take a few steps back, and see what you need to improve.

I can see a pages-long debate arising of this
So let's just say I disagree, the end
Can someone give me a good tutorial for learning to draw faces? I don't think I full understand how the surface planes on a face are supposed to be.

No. They are different actions, I'll make that clearly in the post ;)
Don't really like how the pose on the big guy came out.

this was err... totally for studying leg anatomy.. or something
Well my brain decided I wasn't allowed to sleep until I'd drawn this horrible imp, so I thought I'd share his lovely little self... :v: that left hand is really bugging me too. I'll probably colour it at some point.

I am very confused about the figure in the foreground
I see a hand, maybe a hood and sideways cape thing, then there's a hole and some kind of fan tail and who knows what the stuff is on the right
The golem's fist smashing the pillar is fucking ace though

wrinkles/folds on that cloak are still going in entirely the wrong direction to create any sense of realistic fabric flow
I'll put some STALKER-looking gentlemen with lanterns later

Night scenes are always tricky to light - realistically, one often wouldn't be able to see shit, but this doesn't really work artistically
I'd brighten the moonlight on the landscape to give stuff a bit more definition and seem less under exposed

Yea his silhouette doesn't read well.
It's a hooded dude with a long cape on a hoverbike raising his hand at the golem.

Literally every comment you've made on all my things has to do with the cape.
It'd be nice to hear if you have anything to say about the other 95% of the picture.

you really need to learn proper human anatomy, it's the major flaw with every one of your drawings. every style needs an understanding of anatomy behind it
