Decided I really need practice on backgrounds/environments so giving that a go with this beachy cliff arch thing, also trying to practice depth & values somewhat. Seem to be finding it easiest to do the base colour and then work out the values as transparent overlays so far. Got this far then started considering shifting everything right a bit like in the bottom picture below, thoughts?
Let me open up Photoshop to show you on how to improve. Ok, here we go. I changed the size of the church a bit to get its attention out to the viewer a bit more, excuse me for my bad edititing skills, as I don't have your original photoshop file I can't pick the layer you drew the church on. For the foreground, I suggest you add something like this, a bush of some sorts or something similar, I just did this really quick to show you the effect a foreground gives, it enhances the contrast of the painting better and it creates a greater sense of depth, to enhance this depth further I added some volumetric fog as well. I hope this somewhat helps :)
I'm not all that qualified to discuss composition in terms of changes like this; yours does feel a bit cosier and warmer. The lighting on the bushes/shapes in the foreground is pretty nice and does give it a bit of a better sense of depth. The movement of the diagonal strokes is pretty nice too and they do have some pretty nice tones and gentle highlights to show the far-reaching effects of the church's light. I'm going to keep it how it is though. I think the emptiness of the foreground works well to establish the church as a sort of warm, inviting location within this dark, cold, wet place. The Earth itself needs a stillness or sluggishness in this image to establish the dreary, bog-like tone of the area despite the 'rain' from the city above. The volumetric round-brush fog you added doesn't really sit well with me, given that it creates a sense of stillness in the air, which isn't desired, and that it clashes with the square brush strokes that I've been using from the start to create that foggy depth. If I had time I might pursue some of the things you changed; in particular the way the foreground frames the image in yours could be a neat fairytale-like framing device if it were extended up and around a little bit more. The softness and irregularity of the pillar to the right is pretty nice as well, and may be worth looking at later on when I have more time. Thanks dude!
Worth colouring?
It would lookk better without colouring, in my opinion.
It would lookk better without colouring, in my opinion.
agreed but a little more detail on the tentacle wouldn't go amiss.
I think some sense of narrative or sensible primary focus would be neat. I mean at the moment it's a pretty bare tentacle coming through a super detailed and busy outer frame.
It would lookk better without colouring, in my opinion.
If he coloured it like a punk rock poster it'd be cool.
If he coloured it like a punk rock poster it'd be cool.
B/W shading could also look nice, if done correct. Also as said earlier, some more detail on the tentacle would be awesome.
If he coloured it like a punk rock poster it'd be cool.
What do you mean by "Punk Rockstar"? [editline]7th July 2012[/editline]
B/W shading could also look nice, if done correct. Also as said earlier, some more detail on the tentacle would be awesome.
I tend to like B&W drawings more, especially if it was done on paper. Shading is a nice addition, but colour sometimes ruins it for me. I look for uncoloured versions of art instead.
hey guys, i was wondering. does anyone know any good sites for poses and stuff like that? and does anyone remember the name of that website which had a load of images that you could cycle through randomly? it was posted in here before a while ago, i think. it has a ton of female and male models to choose from to draw, and instead of going through each one, you just click "next" im racking my brain trying to remember it, but i cant remember for the life of me any site that has a lot of female and male facial/anatomy references would help a lot, because its about time i stop dodging my inability to draw faces well and actually do something about it

Guys, so I made a sketch of a character with a pretty big brush and I don't really know what to do next. I don't want to make him look cartoony. Should I draw a black outline for him based on the sketch or do I just start painting over the sketch right away? What are the good brush settings for painting?
Might help if we got to see this sketch first
Alright, here it is, no need to tell me it's shit - I just started drawing recently. I'm yet to learn a lot of stuff like anatomy and so on but right now I felt like drawing something. I check out ctrlpaint and got a couple of Andrew Loomis' books, any other suggestions? [t]http://filesmelt.com/dl/sketch111.png[/t] It's like my second drawing, here's the first one which ended up looking cartoony (well that's because Batman I drew was from the animated series) [t]http://filesmelt.com/dl/batman5.png[/t]
