Seems fine so far. The man in the reference has a pointier nose, though.

WIP of a... nebula study? Also one eye is wider then the other and the lines of his cheeks connect a bit higher up on the nose
This week was damn crazy, so this shit is all I could do. 1 hour sketch. Don't even ask why.
When you say "sketch"
cool so does mine
You guys are lucky, I'd kill for CS6 and Lightroom especially :(
nice, but the shoulders look way high up
Yeah...now I see it. I forgot that the dude has his shoulders way too lower that the suit has. Actually, I always make stupid mistakes, so - not a big surprise.. Also, I don't really understand that agiotage around CS6. May be I missed something, but I feel quite comfortable even on ancient CS3. It has everything I need in painting and editing.

CS5 introduced a sexy sexy on screen colour picker that can pop up anywhere you want it to, layers have some handy dandy features now and the crop tool is way different
I think the cs6 dark interface looks very sleek and cool but i can't help this irksome feeling that I actually prefer and work better on the light gray.

Looking good.
This week was damn crazy, so this shit is all I could do. 1 hour sketch. Don't even ask why.
You obviously understand forms and values, but to be honest this is just a pure cluster fuck of details that do not make sense or add to the design of the suit at all. Most of the suit is not symetrical (Of course it doesnt have to be pure symmetry, but look at something such as the boots and even they are different). To be honest it seems you put in random lines and separated random chunks of armor just in an attempt to make it look detailed and "futuristic". This is a huge problem with the industry these days and now it is rubbing off on aspiring artists, the whole mentality that thoughtless details thrown in make something interesting or futuristic. This is called greeble, and too many people use it in excess these days. Half of those details have no purpose or even flow with the design of the body, it all seems very haphazard and even in a sketch you must take these into consideration. For example, here is a sketch a renowned robotics concept artist created: As you can see, he used extremely basic brush strokes with minimal detail, but because he put thought into the functions and DESIGN of the form rather than the detail, it appears like a reasonably realistic prototype for a post modern robot. No unnecessary details, just thoughts into function, balance, and design. You must take these things into consideration even during your sketches, or your sketches become pointless. The purpose of sketches is to refine your skills, focus on a specific theory or style and/or warm up for a large piece. Regardless of your motive for sketching, they are no less important than your full pieces and you should always put artistic thought into them. It will train you to use what you have learned subconsciously in all your pieces. Next piece you do, first focus on how the suit will function, its design, and try to give it a flow or "mood". Make it stand out from the other generic rabble of other gritty sci-fi armors.
I think the cs6 dark interface looks very sleek and cool but i can't help this irksome feeling that I actually prefer and work better on the light gray.
you can change it
you can change it
i know i know but i'm resistant because the dark grey is so nice looking
yeah it looks nice i like it, it makes it seem more homely and everything is kind of compact, and with a white canvas it makes it feel more focused i dunno its hard to explain
You obviously understand forms and values, but to be honest this is just a pure cluster fuck of details that do not make sense or add to the design of the suit at all. ...
This is one of my biggest problems. I know that I must think before draw and stuff... But besides the obvious lack of knowledge and experience, one of the reasons of why I don't do that in right way is a simple lack of free time. I take a hour or two, and want to finish the piece in that time, because I don't really know when I will be able to draw again. I sure know that it's not right. I should probably try to think about designs and other things while standing in jams or something, and finally start to take sketchbook with me whenever I can. Thanks, anyways.
i know i know but i'm resistant because the dark grey is so nice looking
what about a nice medium-light grey? the interface look is still pretty sleek one thing that bothers me about the lighter schemes is the fact that there's a pixel grid that follows with the theme in the swatches, it's annoying and makes it harder to read my darker swatches
[t]http://i.imgur.com/ySROY.png[/t] [t]http://i.imgur.com/uXxKn.png[/t] Screwing around. The second one is not finished, I just thought it was a cool looking snapshot of it. Hey chains, where are you hanging out these days anyway?
Did something real quick while I took a break from working.
took your guys advice. took a couple of days off since im away from my computer, looked at it again, and saw some flaws. the fingers were definitely too small, the shadows are pretty inconsistent, and the cheekbone is pretty high up there and curved at a pretty violent angle. i was trying to closely follow the reference, but i should've improvised so it looked good, not close im still confused as to why no one likes it though. it looks generally nice to me (probably because i worked on it, i dont know) i will apply what you guys ave told me to the next one, which'll be whenever. im gonna retire the last one though. thanks for the crits, guys. its good to see that there are a couple people willing to help someone improve rather than just be a calloused asshole
Hey chains, where are you hanging out these days anyway?
Just lurking on facepunch and conceptart.org, in real life I am currently going to UNT (university of north texas) enrolled in drawing and painting (illustration basically, too many people enroll in graphic design which is focused more for advertisement when I am trying to get into the conceptual art industry.)

Conceptual art generally refers (from my experience) to the style of fine-art making which is centered more on the idea behind the work itself rather than the final aesthetic outcome. This is my understanding anyway. The last thing you want to do is say the wrong one in a job interview and end up gluing toothpicks to dead rabbits to hang up in a gallery
