I like the first one for some reason... But the rest are pretty nasty. Try making the lines smoother and use less bright colors.

Tricky to get the hang of lighting when you've only got one primary warm light source in an enclosed space; no blue ambience to give the shadows some stuff. Put blue in the 'internal' shadows on the ship instead. Ship needs to be less directional and more saucer-like

They're the first three I've done; I really appreciate the criticism.

i can't tell what i'm looking at. is it a ship being viewed from the inside of a dark cave or something? but then the background looks like a hay field. i'm confused

Even though they are not much different from some paintings you would see in any modern arts museum I think the fact you aren't a well known name is making them ugly paintings.

I thought you were him until I checked the other thread.

The first one was just some technique practice after watching The Joy of Painting and I had an itching to do some mountains;
The second one I was feeling really stifled and felt like I was drowning in my stress so that's why I did that one.
The third one was the first I did which was really just having a muck-about on the canvas learning my tools.
It's why they don't deserve their own thread; I know they're not beautiful and special works but I do need the criticism if I want to grow on it and oil paints are a really meditative sort of activity for me; gets all da bawd feewings out.

learn about color theory.
don't mix your paint so muddily.
use complimentary tones.
maybe try acrylics instead of oils.

I know my post has a couple of funnies but I really mean it. Abstract art like yours is not an amazing display of technical ability, not like a realistic painting. It needs to have a central theme, maybe an emotion or something, a message or comment, whatever, and you really need to tailor the piece around that, the composition and everything. I know it's abstract but people need to be able to take something from it, you need to suggest things without being obvious, that way people feel smart when they realise things about it. Beginners tend to be overly ambiguous to feign intellectualism so make an effort to focus and streamline the piece on that one central theme.
lotusking i see you rated me dumb and considering your title i should not be responding to this but god damn son how do you not see the joke

I just honestly didn't really "go" for any message or anything or anything like trying to feign intellectualism.
I do understand though that it's still something a kid could do; another reason why I wasn't giving it it's own thread. When I started I really just was in a certain mood and started applying paint to the canvas until an image started to form; didn't paint with any real goal or objective to get across because I know that I couldn't even paint a bowl of fruit well and would just start getting accustomed to the tools.
Honestly the only field of art I was ever actually technically good in was with clay and glaze and I was fairly good at throwing on the wheel and none of my pieces exploded and the glaze always came out nice, etc.
That was real work, these paintings aren't; I just wanted good criticism which I got so I felt I should post them.

I'm pretty much completely blind to a bunch of different shades of color; pretty impossible for me.

Simple concept art for an animation I might try to make once I have enough experience with Flash.
It's about an alien hunter/poacher who only hunts to support his starving tribe. When faceless authorities, who outnumber and outgun him, come to punish him for his illegal affairs, hunter becomes prey.

Because, Jupiter.
A friend of mine was over and we were talking about "The Master" that's going to come out, and we titled it as "the movie where Joaquin makes weird faces" then we painted this:

I know it kinda sucks but, any Crits? Also we forgot to save the file of the actual size, or else I'd post that.
The image we used:
[t]https://dl.dropbox.com/u/15602099/jwalkinface.jpeg[/t]
Again, we both did this, so if its any good, the work done on this was split
When it's drawn digitally it's never painted.
sorry, I do not really know the correct terms. What would I say then?
it is painting, it's digital painting, ignore him
Maybe you're right; I've just been corrected on that so much. Every time I say 'painting' some people always say 'drawing*' so now I've started doing that too.
ive always heard people say digital painting, im pretty sure thats the widely accepted term
yeah drawing sounds more like something traditional imo

It's the same way we use DSLR instead of SLR mac, the medium changes, but the same values are still there. You are still TAKING the picture, so it is still considered Photography.
Same way you are still DRAWING or PAINTING the picture, just on a different medium.

Fix shading on left side compared to the right side. Needs more value blending.
It is too harsh on values compared to the picture.

I thought painting actually required paint though. In photography, "photo" doesn't disappear when the medium changes, but in painting "paint" does disappear.
not really, the paint is still there, just not visible until you apply it
-snip-
does the world disappear when you close your eyes?
fuck you galago
Since people seemed to like my original image I gave it another shot, even though I'm still relatively new to concept art :v:
