You want everything washed out so learning from you would be a mistake as well. And no, his values are bad. They are objectively bad. You really can't say they are good, even if you want it to have low contrast.
What? You just stated a complete fallacy, there's no such thing as objectively bad when it comes to artwork. It's all opinion.

I know people around here sometimes dismiss the notion of 'personal style' that defies idealised conventions, but to reject the idea that people might not do things 'the absolute ~~right~~ way' is silly. I don't see what's wrong with not pushing values. In this situation it gives a less confrontational, slightly misty, mysterious edge to the creature, a sense of distance and even sets up a slight sense of scale, given that we perceive it as being further away yet very large. In some situations, high contrast is good. In some situations, it's not. You can't make sweeping objective statements over every piece. Art is about experimentation and doing unconventional things. If everybody suck to a formula and precise set of rules then the entire creative industry would become a a stagnant, Hollywood-cookie-cutter business with no innovation or development or new ways of looking at things. To say nothing of the fact that low contrast can give a very different mood, reading and implied narrative to high contrast work.

And even if it was supposed to be one it still lacked definition in forms and shapes that should be visible even with usage of a low contrast technique. I am not talking about things in an absolute right way, that is indeed silly. I'm just saying that those values are bad any way you look at it. The composition together with the general size and detail implies that he is close to us and there is no visible fog.
While not every painting needs to sport a complete value-range, I think Barnhouse's painting, which is of a gnarly monster, definitely does. Imagine a horror-film with high-key lighting. [editline]29th July 2012[/editline] or a sit-com with low-key!
I agree with dgg on that one. You can really see the sharp teeth and other important details pop out in his edit which fits the subject matter more.
If I have this: What are the common ways to "blend" them together?
If I have this: What are the common ways to "blend" them together?
I personally would just use a low opacity brush to even out the values. Here's some options http://i.cubeupload.com/9MgoY3.jpg
I've started my first digital painting and I just have the opacity jitter set for pen pressure. It seems to do the blending on its own pretty much.
I use a mouse.
I personally would just use a low opacity brush to even out the values. Here's some options http://i.cubeupload.com/9MgoY3.jpg
Will come in handy. Thanks.
I use a mouse.
Set the opacity to a slightly lower value then
WIP. Listened to "In Storm and Sunshine" by John Heed on a loop while painting it so far
I like it. Let's see how it will turn out.

Listened to "In Storm and Sunshine" by John Heed on a loop while painting it so far
I'd add some near-white highlights to the plane to show it reacting (that's fully not the right word) to the light from the lightning, also think about the clouds and consider making them more streaky and horizontal to give a nice sense of speed to the image
Rim-lightning and reflection?
No I was using poetic language to personify the plane goshhhhhhhhhhh
I wonder why ForgottenKane has disagreed every post that says this except for this one
Does it matter? They're ratings, they're not supposed to be explanatory nor completely comprehensive, rather emotional and reactionary. Plus this is completely off-topic and not correlating to the thread at all :v: If you care about my opinion so much then just PM me, it's much simpler and doesn't derail the thread. I think the lightning is a little too straight though, try zig-zagging it some more. EDIT: Pageking. Needs content. A ~very~ WIP piece of mine. It'll look completely different when it's done. But your'e right, irrelevant, sorry.
Ok, I'm going to go to sleep. I may or may not continue this tomorrow.
That was pretty quick. Nice progress.
Ok, I'm going to go to sleep. I may or may not continue this tomorrow.
I'd be tempted to change the aspect ratio to something wider, and again reinforce the suggestion to use some sort of horizontal line or lines to emphasis the speed of the plane, if that's the sort of action you're going for
May be it would be good to add highlights to the plane. It's wet and made of metal. Don't forget it, because now it looks like those army men plastic soldiers and tanks, the only difference is that your plane is yellow. And yeah, more glow to the lighting. I like the overall mood though. Looks cool.
I fucking love this new brush tool preset that I've been using lately. Gives my brush strokes a really pencil/ chalky feel to it. Fucking love it, hnnngghh
I really like the texture to the strokes like that, care to share your settings?
They were tool presets that I used. I actually don't know where they originated from since my sister gave them to me, but you can try 'em out for yourself. https://dl.dropbox.com/u/7835823/pencil_texture_presets.zip Enjoy, bud.
