With concepts you should just get a little notebook...
my room is filled with notebooks and drawing pads filled with mistakes which never got to fruition heck, i even have a box to keep the things in, and the lid doesn't even close anymore its one of those the thing about leaving a picture how it is and re-doing it? i have a irrational hatred of repetition, and an in-ability to draw the same thing twice. i cannot mirror anything, drawing a pair of eyes alone is hard enough. drawing a picture once is fine, drawing it again will lead to my brain completely altering it so that you can't tell what it was meant to be, i'll end up adding un-necessary details. that's usually the way it goes. [editline]10th August 2012[/editline]
THIS EXACTLY Try not to be afraid of making mistakes.
its not over-planning per-se, its more, here's a game you like. make an OC, and i have a checklist i go though, even going as far as making back-stories the only OC's i have that i like are Fo3 born ghoulette, Portal 2 Core/Bot Test subject, Bioshock spider/houdini splicer and Zelda: MM Mask if Truth wearing Garo. [editline]10th August 2012[/editline]
All that overplanning is what is holding you back. Mistakes are part of the learning process, if you're trying desperately to avoid them you're just burning up time. It's like you want to jump over a ditch or something, you need to test yourself and be confident and you'll probably make it, as opposed to being so afraid of falling in that you spend days calculating trajectories and taking a 5km run up to it that will probably just tire you out before you actually get to doing it.
I once tried to jump a ditch, grazed my leg. nobody saw, which is the important thing.
It's not about mirroring, never think that way. You're drawing what you're drawing as a whole. At some point there is a wall you have to push through as a budding artist, a time period where you jump into deeper water and can't touch the bottom. Everything will be too hard and come out looking rubbish, but gradually you'll come up swimming. No amount of advice will do the legwork for you, it's just giving you direction and dos and don'ts. Everyone must go through trial and error and develop their own intuition for drawing. It may feel like you've already been doing that but as we've said your current work process isn't your friend. I would suggest taking a picture, preferably something you wouldn't usually attempt, and setting yourself 30 minutes to draw it. Force your own hand. When you're done, you'll probably be able to see what needs improving, and we can probably give you more in-depth feedback on that. Then take what you've learned from that attempt, find another picture and spend another 30 minutes. Results from this might show quickly, or they might not. But you're guaranteed to improve over time either way
The thing about leaving a picture how it is and re-doing it? i have a irrational hatred of repetition, and an in-ability to draw the same thing twice. i cannot mirror anything, drawing a pair of eyes alone is hard enough. drawing a picture once is fine, drawing it again will lead to my brain completely altering it so that you can't tell what it was meant to be, i'll end up adding un-necessary details. that's usually the way it goes.
Typical "There must be something wrong with me" responses to just a lack of skill because of a lack of practice. If you can't do something well then it means you need to practice it. It's not something wrong with you, it's just you not being good enough yet. If you keep adding unnecessary details then slap yourself and stop the moment you notice you do. Also, the point is that you alter it. You alter it with your new knowledge. Not many of us in CC are I would say, and those that do still have issues and are still developing and so on. Keep them in your head for the time being, don't make them the first thing you attempt on the road to being good at art. Bringing your own characters to life should be at the "end" of the road - not that you ever stop learning, but that's where you want to get to and why you're on the road in the first place. I'm making so many weak ass analogies today.
doing monster hunter fan art but i didn't think it was going to be so hard :( something's wrong with the face but i dunno what [img_thumb]http://filesmelt.com/dl/FART1.jpg[/img_thumb] [img_thumb]http://filesmelt.com/dl/FART2.jpg[/img_thumb] [editline]10th August 2012[/editline] o ya no arms yet too :(
Here seems to be the only place i can get any attention for my work. do you have any idea how much it hurts when shitty sonic OCs or TRACES of ALREADY traced bases get more views/likes/comments than something you worked your ass off over? I post a picture which i took at least five days to draw and get FUCKING NOTHING in the way of recognition, i have 2 followers on that site, and one of them is my boyfriend! i know that i need to improve, and i can certainly draw much better than i did in art classes 2 years ago, its just so annoying, i am learning about anatomy, slowly, and getting used to a drawing tablet which is bigger than my face, telling me straight out that i can't draw? that hurt. i know that tough love is a thing here, (Robbobin :L). i came here for help on my art, and treating me like Andrew Dobson/ Tom Preston or whatever the bloody hell his name is really isn't what i was going for.
I dunno about you, but personally, I prefer to be recognized by a handful of professionals and experienced artists rather than a horde of teenagers that barely know anything in the art field. That's true recognition in my opinion. Which of course, only does happen through a long range of hard works and practises.
Look at Lucky and Detlef
Anyway, I made this today: [t]http://i.imgur.com/cGdMN.png[/t] Just a fun thing, made very quickly. Next time I make one in this style, there will be a lot of texture.
Did this as an exercice (and result) on how my previous practises with faces and their proportion went for the moment. [img_thumb]https://dl.dropbox.com/u/59476659/doodle8.png[/img_thumb] Will do the same kind of work for general anatomy (full bodies and dynamism) as well with backgrounds soon.
Mockup for an acrylic I'm gonna do for me Mam's birthday [editline]10th August 2012[/editline] colours why you so difficult
taking a note from Torvenius and the GW2 team's painting style on this one, drew another Asura from GW2, this time the character I played during beta
Do we choose which mug shot we draw, or is there a specific one for all of us to draw?
i think i'm done but i dunno the face still bothers me a little [editline]10th August 2012[/editline] and the torso is a little long hmm i have to fix that does this look right?
Do we choose which mug shot we draw, or is there a specific one for all of us to draw?
initially I decided we should all do the same one but that's silly and I think we should do any one we want. everyone do eeeeeeeet!
I will do it soon Master Robobobbobin
Ship of some sort. Need more practice with mechanical objects.

The nose is a smudge, it doesn't look like a nose shadow because it's shapeless and has no hint of nostrils or anything to it. For the mouth you've done a thick line where her lips meet I assume, which doesn't work because that line should be super thin. You'd be a lot better off defining the entire upper lip and dropping a shadow under the bottom lip, and the middle line is given by the outline of the bottom of the upper lip. Just study anatomy really, from head to toe it all looks like guesswork.
I must have missed where you suggested we should all do this Did you have digital or traditional in mind?
Absolutely no guidelines whatsoever, just go crazy :D still can't decide which mugshot exactly I want to do.. so many awesome possibilities.
Ship of some sort. Need more practice with mechanical objects.
It looks nice, but some of the paneling looks a bit random. You should check out this video:
Finished mine! Gonna upload it once I've gone to hobbycraft for a craft knife. pretty pleased with this portrait aha.
Well here's my go, but blehhh I took way too long with this. It's... interesting drawing on a tiny laptop half the size of your tablet though lol. Stopped me from zooming in more than about 60% for the majority of it.
ahahaha I love it.
totally gonna get in on this old man drawing
I shall try my best, master Robbobin

Okay, although this thing started as a joke, I'm actually finding myself pretty intrigued by this site. There's some genuinely intriguing, depressing entries: [img_thumb]http://images.jailbase.com/arrested/az-mcso/2012-03-21/william-joseph-chovanec-p852756.pic1.jpg[/img_thumb][img_thumb]http://images.jailbase.com/arrested/az-mcso/2012-06-30/william-chovanec-p881583.pic1.jpg[/img_thumb][img_thumb]http://images.jailbase.com/arrested/az-mcso/2012-07-19/william-chovanec-p887038.pic1.jpg[/img_thumb] First 2 are just trespassing, 3rd is probation violation. It's quite funny until you realise he's probably just a down and out with a horribly depressing story. Once I have several I'm gonna put these on etsy and say they're social commentaries. :v:
Yeah man I'm pretty depressed after browsing that thread for like ten minutes

What did you use for highlights?
looking back I felt the need to make a quick edit :v: goggles are harder than I expected...also lol, so wonky
