I think you just have too look at pictures of landscapes and try to reference them
it doesn't have to be the exact one either, really since all landscapes are the same you could make a totally new one with a bunch of different references
i dunno though i've never done a landscape except once in art class lol

Okay I think it's finally time for me to press the help button,
So i'm actually a camera guy / editor / special effects guy I know the work flow of special effects adding layer ontop of layer adding more and more detail better physics, going back improving something etc.
I'm dying to learn how to draw stuff that I see in this thread:

While the shapes look so simple (three's in the 2nd picture are just lines for example) it looks great or atleast it looks like it's going somewhere.
When I try stuff like this in photoshop it ends up as a huge mess I mostly think because I have no clue what to do, what brush to I pick? How much should the opacity be? What colors do I pick? Do I just start drawing random lines?
I'm sure one of you guys has a found (or has) a video out there not like a step by step tutorial but kinda a basic tutorial that show some tricks to someone that has no clue what to do and most importantly shows the work flow.[/QUOTE]
Ok uh, despite being the creator of the second example picture, I'm not entirely sure if I'm experienced enough to be telling other artists what to do.
In any case, the first step that I do is plop down a quick gradient background, just to get the base colours in.
Then I use 80-90 opacity brushes (normally square or jagged) and put in my base shapes. Circular is good for polishing stuff off and is ok all round, but unless you have really tight spacing, the crescent patterns you get sometimes are really annoying.
Next I add shading, perspective, where light's coming from, stuff like that. These are still vague and blocky shapes.
The next step is going to town with the mix brush. In CS5 you hold down the brush icon and select mix brush. This is by far my favourite tool in Photoshop. It takes your current pallet colour and the colours you're painting over, and mashes them together. It pays off to learn to use this really well.
Then from there, it's really just a cycle of adding forms, shading them, and mixing it in a way that looks pleasing. You basically just rinse and repeat this until you're pretty close to being done.
The last thing is special effects, like lens flares, glowing lights, and small rain or snow particles.
As far as video tutorials go, I would very highly recommend Feng Zhung. I don't know if I'm spelling his name right, but he's a really well spoken and informative digital painter who runs a design school in the Philippines. He's done concepts for the Star Wars prequels, Guild Wars 2, and a bunch of other high profile projects.

Anyway, good luck I guess. Always be sure to post your stuff here as you learn, we'll be happy to help.

Sorry if this isn't the right place to ask, but does anyone here know how I can get a good discount on Photoshop? Adobe seems to be total dicks when it comes to pricing.

I got mine discounted because my mom is an architecture professor, and can get educational discounts on stuff. If you know any teachers or educators, see if you can work something out. That's the only discount i know of

I disagree; if you're referencing then you're not necessarily just copying down form-for-form
Not necessarily, but the way Fire put it doesn't sound encouraging to me

Nah, I think an understanding of colour theory and using references subjectively is important.
I think he had a basic idea, but there's more to it than simply referencing. I know his heart was in the right place, but it really annoys me when people who don't really know what their talking about try to give advice. I don't mean that in an elitist way

I'm envious as hell. I adore that ability to translate the shape of the complicated objects in so easy way.
Reminds me of l4d concepts by the way. Lost of abandoned cars, heli crash sites, that camp in the bottom.

It's professional industry tools. It's not meant to be purchased by the common man in the street.
They are not all that expensive for a company which they are targeted at.
Only discount I know is being a student. I bought the whole Master Collection for less than one program alone.
Is there anyway to make lines like this:

I don't object but I will warn you that, being Facepunch, very few people read text works
THis is kind of based off Into the Wild, you might catch a few references if you've read it before. Enjoy?
A man sat hunched atop a fallen tree, cradling the precious kindling in his hands. Its growing warmth permeating his hands, he must resist the urge to drop it into the pile of wood he had hastily constructed, for the fire was too young and too weak to survive on it’s own. As warmth of his hands gradually turned to pain, he carefully placed down the burning kindling into the pile of wood; the man soon sat beside a growing fire. He reached inside and pulled out a chipmunk, already beginning to stiffen, not for rigor mortis, but the cold. In a few short minutes, he had properly skinned the small mammal and was in the process of skewering it on a large, sharp stick. The man’s body relaxed as he placed the animal over the fire, for he was about to eat meat for the first time in 3 days.
This was the life the man had chosen, lonely, difficult, cold and unforgiving; and he thrived on it. The wild, untamed wilderness was an allure that no woman could match, no promise of money, no position of power. The man pulled out his diary, and a pen. He slowly and methodically recorded his kill. Hunger had consumed the man’s thoughts lately, he no longer had time to sit and contemplate; his time was consumed by hunting and gathering. The man's face was stretched gaunt across his cheekbones, his eyes sunken and his skin a deathly pale. Scanning the horizon, he looked for more; He had found food today, but there is no rest for the weary; for today he feasts, and tomorrow he starves. The man removed the chipmunk, carefully eating the animal. No part was left to waste. One hundred and three days, the man had known hunger; unlike he ever had previously.
The man's head stopped scanning, instead focusing on a single, distant object. Spotting a moose on the horizon. He did not get up though, he simply observed with morbid curiosity. He had been hallucinating for days now, even longer he had been hearing things. Eight times he had awoken to the roar of a bear, right outside. Clutching his rifle he would wait for sunrise, not daring to sleep. He had heard people talking, just beyond the tree line. That night he had run, yelling, blind through the forest at night; shouting for help. The most comforting of all these was his parents. They would stand at the end of the bus, smiling at him when he woke up. His mother would sit beside him while he fell asleep. He felt at peace with them. The man decided that it was worth pursuing, with a sigh and a shake of his head, he grabbed his gun and retreated into the brush; making his way towards the animal.
Within minutes he had almost reached the tree line. He moved forward, minutes passing in between his steps, the soft, methodical sound of his breathing kept his steps in time. The man stopped abruptly, and slowly removed the .22 rifle from his back. A single shot to the head, would most likely kill the animal. Rate Useful if you read this, so i can get an idea. If the round hit anywhere else, the animal would be panic. He could be injured, or possibly killed. The man took aim and slowed his breathing; he centred the shot, leaving no factor to chance. The animal was upwind, it would not smell him, his cover made him near impossible to spot. Everything was perfect. He fired.
The round slammed into the animal, it turning it's head away moments before the shot was fired, hitting the animal's thigh instead. The confused animal let out a loud roar. It ran towards the sound, towards the man, smashing into the undergrowth. Who dived out of the way moments before the animal ran into the brush. The man, heart wildly beating, sprang up and chased after the animal; he followed the line, the red line, drawn on the snow, running behind, keeping in it's wake, following his grisly trail. It was metres ahead at most, but the trees, and bushes made it impossible to get a shot off. Frenzied, the animal continued at full speed, but he had already started to slow, his weakness getting the better of him. The man's blood was pounding in his ears, his legs already burning from exhaustion. But he knew better then to stop, stopping was literally a matter of life and death. The man heard rushing in his ears; getting louder as he went on. He realised that the rushing was not that of blood, but the raging rapids in the valley below. He sped up, flowing over everything in his path, his steps were fluid. His jumps were far, his body was fast. He did the impossible, he began to catch up. No longer was he following the sound of the moose and a painted line, but the flashes of brown fur. His body had stopped hurting, his mind was elsewhere. He weaved between the trees, the moose was slowing. It was not built for long distance, and it's leg was injured too.
The man saw it's head turn around to face him as it flew off the edge of the cliff; It's eyes terrified and confused. Pangs of sympathy nibbled at the man's heart, as he stopped just short of the edge, watching the body crack on the sharp rocks below. He fell to his knees, the adrenaline wearing off. He lay back in the snow, staring at the sky The cold snow soothing his aching limbs. He knew, now, his days were numbered. He would not survive this. He accepted it. He had tried his best, he had failed. In doing so he had done something totally alien to him, a first, something he had never done before. He gave up.

I wish I could get around to reading other people's fiction, but for some reason I just never have the will to do it. It's weird, because I'm perfectly happy to write fiction and poetry. Maybe I'm just scarred by years of badly written texts on the net.
