Saw a pretty big black widow out on the front porch, camping out in some of the gaps of stonework. Dunno, thought I would draw something like that.
So I'm new to digital painting and I'm noticing when I use the square brushes and stuff if I do any sort of curve its kinda jagged around the edges. Also how do I make sure my painting doesn't look muddy.
Lower the spacing in the brush panel.

An update on the game; I'm working on shifting all the different bits of code into separate Classes so that I can more easily add separate copies of objects without having to copy and paste a heap of code.
If anybody understands Actionscript3 pretty well and can help me figure out how custom classes work please let me know! It's pretty hard to grasp at the mo

I want to ask someone who's done a lot of traditional and digital art (I've only done traditional so far, p.189). Is it really that easier to do digital stuff? I mean you can erase, redraw, copy-paste, change layers, re-position stuff across the screen etc. In colored pencils you have one try, you can't completely remove colors, strokes like with b/w graphite pencils. If you lay something on, it's final. Not asking this because I want the easiest medium, I love pencils, but just curious.
Digital gives MUCH more room to make the piece amazing, because you remove all the variables that can ruin traditional art. For example if you mix paints, you don't have that problem with digital where the paints could be mixed wrong and resulting in a messed up colour on the piece. The fact you can use layers and erase is also quite an amazing bonus.
I definitely think digital is much easier to work with, but at the same time, I think the end result of a traditional piece is a lot better.
Of course the last bit probably just comes down to personal taste.
Another quick question, when painting in photoshop what do you have your canvas set to? like size and resolution?

It is easier in its editing versatility, backtracking and so on. But there are cons too. With a pencil, you're not really likely to lay something on and then want to remove it, because you're actually making the mark yourself so there's no reason you'd get it wrong with the precision that traditional media allows. Even when you're used to drawing on a tablet, the level of control is never on par. So if you know the line or shape that you want to make, getting from A to B can be more hassle digitally because you have to adjust your process to allow for a bit more trial and error, undoing or doing it almost right and having to erase or fill in parts..
Plus I think most artists working digitally are probably aiming to have their process as close to traditional art as possible, IE working on one layer instead of loads, not undoing and so on. A lot of the useful aids of digital media are really just insurance against mistakes and will slow you down for as long as you need to rely on them.
There are also artists who exploit the non-traditional aspects of digital art to the full, repositioning and adjusting curves and colours all the time and what have you. It's down to you whether you respect that sort of practice or whether you wanna steer clear of it or only use it in X scenario.
I think the bottom line is that painting is not very much easier digitally. The main advantage is the lack of supplies you have to buy and carry around in my opinion. You still have to deal with mark making and colour theory and millions of other things. Of course you can be a lot freer and fuck things up and you haven't wasted paint and oil and varnish and canvases and etc etc etc
I guess tl;dr - It's not much easier to work digital. All of the enhancements and tools cannot substitute for being skillful and having general artistic abilities and a good eye. So don't feel like everyone is taking the easy route by going digital while you're still slogging away in pencil, because it is in no way a magical solution to any of the difficulties you have learning to draw and paint.

Nah, I'm not like that. I believe that if technology helps us do something easier we should allow it and focus on things we couldn't do before until it will become easy and cycle repeats. We are not banging rocks together when we have a stove do we?

You can't compare it like that, though. You only push a button on the stove. You don't create the heat; the stove itself does that. When going digital you still need to understand color theory, anatomy and so on.

Good attitude I suppose. But remember that as I explained, digital art doesn't make any of the fundamentals easier.

what brushes do you use?
Tablet pen is overheating; sounds ridiculous, I know, but I think when it gets too hot something inside expands and instead of registering long presses on the tablet surface it registers as a bunch of little taps.
Will finish this one soon.

It's one of Daarken's http://daarken.com/ (go tutorials>my brushes) I did this painting with absolutely nothing in mind as the brush is so random, even doing variations of the colour you chose. Awesome for abstract backgrounds and happy accidents but annoying once you realize what you want to do :p

Uh, what kind of tablet pen can even overheat?
Neither my Intuos4 pen or any of my bamboo pens have ever malfunctioned due to something that isn't being dropped
wtf maloof how is it so hot that your pen fucked up, do u live on the sun?
Na but the place where I live the guys set the heaters to 'too hot' so they get to like 24C sometimes
I think that something inside the pen expands a little when the heat rises and that causes it to register being touched to the tablet wrong
I dunno, it's been dropped a fair few times and it's like 4-5 years old now
There has been some weird shit going through my mind recently.
Dunno if it's finished. Dunno if I like it, or if I hate it.
About the lack of contrast, it's there to simulate the mat texture of the paper.

It was way better when it was sea-green all over. The monotone sea-colour really complemented the way the mountains look like waves.
I also do not understand why Bullfrog's loading CD image is floating on the top.
It went from having a great montone colour palette to just being an image run through instagram.
That whole cross-processed 80s cd cover aesthetic never sat well with me; it just makes me feel a bit uneasy.

its really cool man, do you have a portfolio? I would love to see more of your work.
Also, I think your WIP showed some interesting things that aren't here anymore, like the sea-greenish colors dgg mentioned, and I also really liked the "incomplete look", like there would be caps of gray when there were supposed to be mountains.
The circle, which I'll assume represents the sun, also feels a bit left out on the composition, like it's a logo and the mountains are the background. Maybe if you moved it a bit to the left, to make it assume a more natural position for the sun, it would look better.

Those dunes he made remind me of the illustrations in a jehovah themed magazine my mom gets from time to time. And we have nothing to do with jehovas witnesses. But yeah, kinda the usual illustrations from boring books.
