proportions and measuring.
posture (to avoid making them look stiff and lifeless) and proportions
Hey people I got a question. When you get into figure drawing, what are the most important things you as a beginner has to focus on? Posture? Anatomy? I've been dicking around with shapes and stuff for a while, and wanted to do something a bit more interesting.
Proportion is my kryptonite. I always draw people with little stubby legs. Figure drawing helped a lot with that. Gesture also.
I used one of the sites linked here before and drew some figures, put the timer on 1 minute. [thumb]http://i.imgur.com/Puw9A.jpg[/thumb] Needless to say, I need to spend more time :v:. Time to read about proportions.
Can someone go into more depth about this?
it's about understanding the flow of motion in a subject's pose and what their pose suggests, more than just perfectly recreating their silhouette
Well obviously, but how do you do that. What's the difference between recreating the shape vs understanding the pose and how it flows in a 3 dimensional space?
it's what you'd call a proper gesture study rather than just copying a photo reference to the detail. do it by starting with very long, flowing curves and lines that just suggest direction and intention rather than measuring out bodyparts n detailed stuff like that [editline]3rd October 2012[/editline] it's the difference between this [t]http://i.imgur.com/Puw9A.jpg[/t] and this [t]http://www.michaelfaieta.org/gallery/draftsmanship/images/figure_study_gesture.jpg[/t] [editline]3rd October 2012[/editline] sorry to use you as reference swebonny. you were making a good start on proportions for the most part

I really like the colours on that! the shadows do seem a bit soft though for a lightsource that seems so brilliant
Trying to learn to give paintings a focus but perhaps there isn't enough detail outside of the face?
Can someone go into more depth about this?
Essentially, use more cross-contours. You are only getting the contour of the figure which makes the drawings appear flat. It's the difference between: and
I've been brainstorming stuff for something to put into our school's Literary Magazine, and I've come up with this concept so far. This is the thread for writing shit too, right? I hope so. This is really rough, and I'm planning on adding and taking away ideas before I begin drafting.
Torn: The Anarchistic Morality of a Zombie Apocalypse • Small Parasite, spreads through water • Attacks brain stem, takes over bodily functions • Hosts still conscious, can tell what their bodies are doing • Hosts can still communicate by voice • Parasite takes over body’s metabolism, puts all efforts into growing claws, muscle • Hosts progressively grow insane, though not animalistic • Focuses on English Military, struggling to keep themselves alive • Citizens are either desperate for help or abusing the apocalypse for their own "pleasure" • English government is doing all they can to assist the people, slowly draining all resources because of lack of trade from other, also zombie-infested countries • Fuel, as well as other commodities begin running low • Animals become infected after parasite mutates/evolves, meat unsafe to eat, animals begin infecting humans as well • All humans die in the end, Earth reduced to ruins
If you're writing about the English Military you need to start on what happens to them specifically, who the characters are and what they're like, stuff like that.
Can someone go into more depth about this?
I posted this some time ago to show process- [t]http://i.imgur.com/qecwT.jpg[/t] And also this tutorial-ish post [t]http://i.imgur.com/w4dpK.jpg[/t] Hope that helps

My vote is for a colour scheme without the red sun. Your inadvertent Japanese nationalism has been an issue before :v:
I say embrace the nippon
