I've been having new thoughts and I'm just pounding out ideas for a new style revision at the moment. I have never thought of anything like this before until last night! Here are two quick ones I did recently. Last night: Today:
vector practicing [t]http://i.minus.com/iVuNDHepbnXjQ.png[/t] made from reference. i hope it's the last one i do that, i want to learn how to do it freehand
With made from reference you really mean traced right? Since that's how one usually does it with vectors, and saying you want to do it freehand kinda implies it wasn't done from scratch, although I guess you could also just mean that you want to do a vector without reference. Anyways, I feel you took way too many artistic choices. Why did you remove her red horn? (or rather, give it the colour of the fur) Why did you retain some of the shading whilst removing others and adding random spike forms in the fur? Why did you make it so dark and grumsy in the choice of colours? The reference is standing in the shadow with a bright sun hitting her chest, but in your version nothing really makes sense since it isn't consistently shaded with the same light source and the highlight is hardly different from the shadow. Changing the direction she looks is a-ok but I do wonder why you made her nose so much longer and changed her ear completely.
yes, i meant traced. tracing isn't art at all, it's just ripping off someone else's work and talent, anyone can do it. red horn: i accidentally hid the layer :suicide: removing shading: i don't really notice many shadows i removed, can you point some out? fur: i had no idea on how to do it. i tried to do something different from the original, didn't work, i guess colors and shadows/highlights: i wanted to make it look kind of cel-shaded. i failed horribly with the lighting - she's standing under trees, that means theres shadows and otherwise bright sunlight, and that doesnt appear on my attempt nose: oh god it's so much bigger ear: that one i did on purpose, wanted to detail that part a bit, it looked a bit too plain imo thanks for taking your time to write that up, much appreciated [editline]27th October 2012[/editline] good lord i just checked and i accidentally hid the red ear layer so early that i even put fur spikes over it. jesus fuck
Well if it's left alone as just that one traced image/character, yeah. But collages and completely new compositions and shit can become art, as long as it consists of several pieces and not just one. But yes, as a general rule it isn't. Red horn: Tsk tsk, gotta control dem layers bro. Fur: Didn't work at all, your lightning spikes does not consider the light source nor the size of the fur, they are just randomly sized and spread around and doesn't contribute to the form at all. If anything it looks flatter because you've got random spikes layered around on it. Uh, what? The reference is already cel-shaded. There is one colour for highlight, one for shadow and one base, that's cel shading. The difference in values usually stick out very clearly as well since they only work with 3 tone variations. Ear: You shaded it retardely though, the shape of the ear is completely mauled by the shape of the shadows, they make no sense whatsoever. Also the shape of the ear is much like an oval, right now you've made it into a round diamond, I've never seen an ear like that. Black circles: lack of shade Red circles: Not displaying the difference at all (hood of the fur vs body of the fur and fur vs t-shirt) I took the freedom to remove the fur shading and add in some new. [t]https://dl.dropbox.com/u/3655193/MonoProblems.png[/t] I'd also like to note that you removed a lot of the angry expression by altering the distance from the eyebrows to her eye. And you're adding in weird drop-shadow shadowing on things like the eyebrow, eye and where the hair meets the skin, you really shouldn't.

Recorded myself doing a speedpaint for the first time ever! Also the clouds should be a bit brighter. Oh well, next time! [editline]28th October 2012[/editline] This darker photoshop theme is really throwing my brightness off; everything looks far brighter against that dark grey.

Maybe because it looks like we should be able to see a hint of collarbone or tendon or something and it's just flat despite how much of it is visible [editline]28th October 2012[/editline]
Recorded myself doing a speedpaint for the first time ever!
Vut is the light coming towards her chest or from above? the shadows made me think she was under a tree and light was coming from above, but her chest is lit up
She's standing under a tree, but at the edge of it. You can see how the tip of the wolf's nose is also highlighted strongly. So part of the body is in the shadow and part of it in the sun. The lightsource is the same for the shadow area as the sun area, just different strength to the light.
You should make it interesting, have the americans as the antagonists for once and the good old soviets taking them out
Actually I am mixing the story up. Sorry for replying late, but I actually want you guys to proofread my idea. Mission 1, you control American commandos infiltrating the compound for the Soviet's lunar superweapon. Mission 2, you fight through the tunnels to reach the weapon. At the end of this mission, you get orders to fire it at Moscow. You have the option to either destroy Moscow, or let the weapon overheat and self-destruct. Mission 3A, occurs if you destroy Moscow. You fight your way to the extraction point as the remaining Soviet forces counter-attack. Mission 3B, occurs if you let the weapon blow itself up. American black operations teams come in to take you out on account of your insubordination, and you ally with the remaining Soviets to withstand their attack. Sound solid? We're not aiming for some triple-A game title, we just want to present a small but finished idea.

I get what you mean. I really want to start getting into more close-up, more complex landscapes that have more going on than just 'an open space with a big thing in it'. I need to stop shying away from complex compositions! I want to get into people as well. I'm going to start doing figure and face studies so that I can get a better understanding of the human form. I'll probably look up that guy that we're always talking about who wrote books and that. Can't remember his name right now though haha Refined it some [editline]28th October 2012[/editline] Just bought a new tablet too! It's a 6x9" Bamboo Fun. It's a decent upgrade from my 4x5" Graphire 4. My Wacom pen for my Graphire is overheating (gets too hot; registers a long press as many little presses) so I figured it was time for something new.
Loomis! And I hadn't thought of it before, but it is pretty bizarre that you do endless landscapes and no people Get on it!
Actually I am mixing the story up. Here's a concept i'm working on with the idea that the armor allocates the heart to a specific area and can increase bloodflow/strength and literally pumps it up :v:. I'm going to do some other characters where the 'allocation' is in the legs etc. This started as a line drawing but I can't decide if to go all the way painted or leave them in?
I drew another one of those robots a few days ago cause they're fun to do [img_thumb]https://dl.dropbox.com/u/7346219/Arts/New/robotscreenscan.jpg[/img_thumb] [editline]28th October 2012[/editline] I can't remember if I posted it or not :S

It's not very enjoyable (painful) for the eye to watch, I suggest move your island to two thirds of the picture  Never put your focal point in the center. Here, I uploaded this for you: http://filesmelt.com/dl/composition_notes.pdf I highly suggest taking all the time needed to read this because it's really worth it. Yeargh. I've been working on architectural sketches for the last 32 hours. I might post them when I am more cognitive than my current state in which I feel like a twelve year old, so like next week :v: Ow.
If I am going to use a tablet, which program should I use for drawing? Does photoshop cs6 do well?
Should I post a work in progress? I'm almost done coloring it, but it's just so... odd. I'm not really liking how it turned out.
Did a quick master study, about 3-4 hours. This turned out about 3000% better than I expected it to. PS default dry brush used.
Looks like a damn good scan of a 19th century painting. I am impressed.
Fine. [t]http://i.imgur.com/FFkfY.png[/t] This is probably my quickest thingy yet. I'd like to say that it took an hour to do the original pencil drawing, but I spent another two or so being nitpicky. Coloring took a while, but still, for someone who works as slow as I do, this is pretty quick. Still, it sucks. Hopefully I can mess around with it more and save it. Any tips on how to improve this?

Such a nice medium to use combined with white chalk/white gel pens for highlights.
