I want to write a kids/all-ages story
any crits on my writing style before I continue
This is quaint and cute, I like it! Sort of reminds me of Lemony Snicket/Daniel Handler's style of writing. Had me smiling at some parts :D Just some minor quibbles I think is your change in voice in some parts, like in the "Britches said he was fine, thank you." part. It makes it seem out of place and kind of breaks the pacing/flow.
Also, you should fix your formatting as regards to the line breaks, use them sparingly especially in a kid's book as it also breaks the flow of the story too much. At least clump them up together so the focus is still there. Take it however you like it!

creepy and distorted! love your attention to detail here! I'm not sure if it's intentional but the arm is extremely thin, and the skeleton guy has no chin. also other anatomy issues!

The jaw was a woopsie(*), the rest are intentional. A work in progress somewhat.
*Thanks.
guidance. give.
There's not really much to give, you always start by learning realistic anatomy, shading, perspective and then use them to create whatever you want. Be it life drawing, be it anime or some other cartoonish style. In other words you have to learn it before you can distort it, but not the other way around.

Looks too flat, seeing as the light is coming from the front you should not only made the small tubes and whatnot darker on the sides, but the figure in general.

It's not a practical example, just illustrating what I meant. To do it correctly you need to redo all the shading in the picture. So just call it a day on that one and do something new
I feel I'm starting to branch out with more varied pallets and less monotonous single-colour images
not really happy with this one though

Is that perspective traced?
Is that perspective traced?
Nope, all from the ol' brain
Is it unusually accurate? Because normally my perspective is balls
[editline]31st October 2012[/editline]
Also a real quick painting for a friend who wanted 'a chair with heaps of legs'
Anatomy is probably way off, I wasn't really going for formal accuracy haha

I don't want to burst your bubble but mud, beige and oversaturated greens are like the trademark of most of your stuff and are all in evidence here :v:
[editline]31st October 2012[/editline]
I like it btw
The big structure and airships in the background fuck with it though imo, would be better with just a bird or something up in that funnel of negative space rather than a big intrusive mass

Yeah the beige is all up in that
I dunno I find it hard to find any realistic scene without a bit of beige in it, especially with late-afternoon sun haha
I'm gonna do some snow or something
The big mass was there before I put in all the buildings to the left so it does feel pretty cramped now
The whole piece just falls down for me though
I think I just dislike drawing strict urban scenes. I like some organic shapes and that

Did a quick castle doodle, what do you guys think?
Click for full size.
All done with my mouse :v:
Some crits would be nice too.
Still experimenting

the reason why it's relatively empty is because I used it to illustrate a single effect.

How about this?
I don't really know where you're at but you can still learn a bunch just by using pencils and paper.
Tell me where I said I don't draw using pencils and paper. I did draw using pencils because I didn't have y tablet with me for a long time. Right now I got it back so I can take it up along with pencil drawing.
What's so bad about being curious on what software to use? Strange enough, nowhere on the internet anybody can tell me any valueble info on that subject. I trusted in facepunch, but even it didn't help at all.
No offense guys, but almost none of you helped so I am gonna just experiment with trial versions of art rage and corel painter
[editline]31st October 2012[/editline]
Oh, didn't notice Chaplin's comment. Might try sai as well :)

photoshop best program
Yeah if you can't do it on photoshop I don't really think you have any reason to think you'd have much more luck on any other program. Either you're just not practiced enough in photoshop or you're not practiced enough at drawing/art in general.

Draw a favela or something that's pretty colourful.

Did you paint that? If so I like it. Feels almost like a Vue render or some such though, but I can't figure out why

it's polygon-y
or i mean something to do with the shadows
definitely a heavy work in progress, probably done with it for the day though

Oh, sweet, Super Metroid's title screen. Really looking forward for the final result
I have an opportunity to show a trailer at this local art show that's tied to our school. The catch is that videos can be max 20 seconds, so it was a mission to get enough visual and textual information in.

For some reason even at 720 Youtube has destroyed the quality
You should speed up everything in that game. Movement is far too slow.
it doesn't seem to have any idle or ambient animations at all
I actually like the speed, pacing, and feel of it.
I'm excited to see where you'll go with this, I think you have a marvelous idea here.
Might as well repost this with its piece of shit background.

Honest criticism would be appreciated. Thanks.
If it's visible right now, then yes, it is my avatar.
It's difficult to crit that, there's not much to it. The red eye (?) looks out of place since the rest of the image is flat, and especially since the black part has no texture at all.
If that's the full size you REALLY need to work larger.
it doesn't seem to have any idle or ambient animations at all
He's got an idle breathing animations, but none of that Crash Bandicoot-style 'pull out a yoyo and do tricks' if you leave him still for long enough haha

Thank you for the feedback. I appreciate it, because I honestly need to stop bitching about how much I suck and just find ways to improve.
Yes, it's an eye. The whole thing is a fly. I have noticed that the head looks smooth as a stone, too. It bothered me, but I didn't really know what to do about it.
I will note that this is something I did relatively quickly. Which is still forever.
No, it's not the full size. I scaled it down to Steam avatar size.

I think if you just buffed out the black head it would look great
Add a line of specular down the 'nose' bit to the right and darken the left hand side where it would be in shadow

Where did I say I have problems with photoshop?
Ok, let's stop that discussion, it's pointless. I have both PS and ArtRage installed now. ArtRage seems cool, I will try to make something with it and show you guys.
