Scholarships, loans, grants, relatives, etc. You pay that shit back your entire lifetime if you don't get a high paying job though. worth it
Oh and I started something today. I had a sketch done a while ago so I started rendering it. I never tried painting like this but I kind of like it

It's clearly not finished yet, but could you provide some advice on my shading/brushing?
Having a bit of prior experience w/ cartooning, I have a few tips in mind that may or may not be in the direction you're looking for.
And of course I have no idea who you look like but nonetheless I hope this helps you w/ brushstrokes and shading.

The key to cartooning is consistency. Even if you don't blend the shadows together you don't want the edges to have a texture that's a bit jarring to the eye, otherwise you should just paint a portrait rather than utilizing outlines.
Also I do not have good taste in eye glasses.
Thank you! Curved building was intentional, but crappy perspective on windows/sign is my bad, sorry. Just your average MARCO Raffine pencils, 36 pieces. I sharpen them up as often as I can and give them some good pressure, or else there will be white paper visible a lot. That's why all pencil drawings are so saturated - You can't mix your green or red or blue with white/color higher up the color wheel to make them more de-saturated like in paints. Here's my album if you're interested: http://imgur.com/a/Q0NEY

О, детка, tell me about it. I remember watching a very good acrylic painting video tutorial, couple hours of theory and there he was: Mixing colors, slow and easy so I could repeat, then grabbing colors on a brush, piece of cake. After that he started to do this little funny swirling motion with the brush (left-right-left-right) to blend the color nicely into the canvas, it turned out great. I made the exact same movement pattern and I got shit. I guess it's like riding a bicycle - it looks simple - you sit on top and turn the pedals, but there's always some micro-movements you need to master in order to actually not fall in the ditch in a couple of seconds. Practice does make perfect.
Having the same problem товарищи, but I already realised it's just a matter of practice.
Also bleacher - you are my favourite artist. I mean really I just came all over my screen after seeing the album.

I am sorry about the whole freelancing argue. I told him to stay away from freelancing beause in Russia freelancing is hard. You can't just sign a contract with the client and bring him to the court if something bad happens. The court will take years and you will spend more money then the client owes you. Such is life in Russia.
I forgot that stuff is different in [sp]normal[/sp] other countries. Still would suggest to join a project like make illustrations to some writer's books or whatever you can find. Well, just my personal thought.
[editline]6th November 2012[/editline]
You can make big money on graphic design. Sure it's not the same thing as art, but generally uses may similar techniques. How colors play together, composition and general creativity for example. I believe you can be artist/designer so when you can't find a contract in one sphere you can do it in the other one.
Late night glitchin'.

I'm not much of an artist, more of a programmer.
Something made me need to draw a suit though.

Don't worry dude it's useful to hear as many takes as possible :D
Graphic design definitely seems to be where the big money is (like several thousand pounds for 2 pages of sketches and one finished design with up to 2 revisions?!?). It's not the sort of thing I really want to do, but I think I might be able to settle for a gig like that. I'm just not totally sure where you find work doing freelancing more than anything.

It's a lot more than just pumping out sketches; it's a lot of mental processing and a lot of hard work, as far as I'm aware

Talk about taking it lightly.
1000 dollars for a canvas with scribbles and paint on that just took a couple of hours?!
Yeah I know it's actually an incredibly difficult field, but my point is, if you're successful, you do get crazy money. I can't think of many other jobs where $250 an hour isn't a totally obscene amount of money.
There is a lot of jobs where that isn't unthinkable if you're successful. Same goes for artists, the really successful ones can earn a years living or two on one work.
It's that dream situation hardly anyone gets on and then everyone else has to strive to earn the minimum wages.
I just want to get to the point where my skills are in demand and that jobs find me. I can't imagine how it must be to be somebody like Viktor Antonov and have Valve or Arkane call up and be like 'sup g, do us some concepts'

From what I've seen, a lot of GD work is like a cartel to rip off people who are computer/design illiterate. If you get a gig with a decent sized company, nobody on the client side of things is going to question putting something together that is beyond their knowledge of how to do; they just need X brochure in X amount of time or whatever it is. Even if this is laughably simple to someone with a bit of software experience, you can give them a quote of a couple of grand and they'll just file it under expenses for a means to an end. With smaller businesses or in a one-to-one client scenario, you charge a much more reasonable fee in the hope of further commissions.
