Damn, I want to learn to draw so much. Not for any particular use but one - whenever I get an idea or just get random inspiration I want to be able to create something I enjoy looking at.
Althought I don't know how to do that without an art class. The information on the internet is massive and not always useful :(
Whispering I can understand being nice, but she's stressing me out with her super slow talking :v:
And fifteen minutes of whispering very slowly and playing with groceries, that's pretty fetishistic Maloof!
The fingernails are doing it for me though wtf that's so weird.
Photoshop seems to be better for a beginner so I just tried switching back to it.
God fucking dammit the frustration! Any way to turn multi level undo on? I got used to removing many lines and going to the history tab every time makes me angry as hell.

There are multiple forums online like conceptart.org where you can sing up for online classes.

all of my love
Being the hormonal girl that I am on the inside my first post was... just posting stuff in the wrong thread? Nonetheless, I'm aware that you guys do critiques, thus I'm happy to actually post things here. Anything to further abilities as an artist, eh?
Anywho, I did this one for my Intermediate Drawing class. Ink pen for the main figure, charcoal for the rest of it.

This was a photograph of the piece so it is slightly distorted.
Well, you've got your answer right there. If you really want to get stuff detailed or at least make it look like it is, get/make a custom brush. Unless you want to hand-paint every little rock on the picture. Or you can just start with some basic values of different areas and make it more detailed as you go until you're satisfied.
By the way, I think you've got waay more stone and rocky stuff on your picture compared to the photo. You might want to give the lava more space to make it more noticable.
I think hand-painting is the point of painting
I advise against using textures from the get-go muffin (or at all tbh, unless you're an environmental concept artist and you need to pump out really complex looking works under short deadlines or something like that)
If you want to be a good artist something you'll want to achieve is painting boiled-down versions of what you're seeing which read the same as the real thing. And it's very important that you don't discount the crit you've got on your fire in favour of the rocks or some other part of the picture, because at your level everything is relevant to everything else (I.E your flaws with one thing are going to carry over into everything else since they are fundamental problems)

Isn't it an airboat going through a river/swamp?
photostudyish thing, based on a photo by this DA user: http://kayranoice.deviantart.com/art/On-a-mountain-so-high-251144140

I don't really like it to be honest. Too bland and 'happy fairytale'
[editline]9th November 2012[/editline]
I feel I'm sort of getting the hang of characters without reference though. I don't like going for 'idealised' proportions because I think that results in really stale forms and personalities. But in terms of believability I think I'm getting there

To be honest I think your problem was that you started off using a bland picture more than anything, youv actually drawn something that looks better then your source, the colours are nice, theirs a good contrast and most predominantly a sharp perception of depth.
The only thing putting me off is the pose of your character, I'm maybe getting a sense of awe from him, but I'm not really being told what hes feeling in my opinion, or maybe that's what your going for? :) I dont know.

at least someone can kinda read it

i'm realising the more and more i do stuff from my own head how awful i am at drawing and painting and how i should have actually learned properly instead of kidding myself

take this as an example of how not to spend 2 years of your life kids

Its because your doing it from your own head XD you think every great artist out there just pulled stuff out of there head and recreated it perfectly on paper? No dude :P they studied and built up a knowledge of how almost EVERYTHING worked around them and then they started to create, your being needlessly harsh to yourself, its all about study and practice. Just go out, look at things, learn there shapes, inspiration dosn't just appear, its a collective of what we learn from others..soooo...go learn stuff, or Ill get even more preachy and sympathetic.
i get that. that's what "should have actually learned properly instead of kidding myself" refers to. i should have been doing that 2 years ago rather than doing photostudies and parading them around thinking i'm some sick cunt artist because it's only now that i realise i can't actually draw or illustrate for shit and i've got a lot of catching up to do

The structure in the distance looks like something you'd see in Requiem
And don't be afraid of using references! As long as you stay within the law then you're fine
Leonardo DaVinci used to scramble around town looking for interesting faces to draw; Constable used to sit in the countryside and paint what he could see. Everybody be usin the real world as a base when they need to

Concept art for a game my friend and I are hoping to work on, since we ditched the moon game idea.
Basically S.T.A.L.K.E.R. in Antarctica, with oil companies as factions

C&C Please
Gotta keep my AK47 warm with a nice green scarf :3
gonna have 5 hours sleep then get up and do a bunch of 10-20 minute landscape studies before uni and start sorting myself. i'll put some research into where i need to head in the long-term. cheers for the kick up the arse fp

As long as you have a year left in you id say you could do it with dedication, at least you know how to use colour well, because I cant do shit with it half the time and im sorry if I sounded stupid, i was trying to give advice from what I knew, should have read the post proppely I guess :P
Ive got some C&C on how to fix the proportions and angles on the Hotline Miami work if you'd like them? Although Ill have to post them tomorrow as its extremely late were I am.

I took that from Enemy At The Gates
I suppose it keeps ice from forming on the barrel
Pretty sure a Kalashnikov could handle that though

This sounds like a more nuanced form of "cartooning is my style so I'll just start there and stick to that"
Realism and proper proportion are so so important for doing non-idealised characters, you should know that as well as anyone in here who has heard it a million times
I don't wanna be crackin' down on you too much but all of your figures have not been fresh or bursting with personality, rather they're noticeably out of whack due to lack of figure fundamentals behind them.
Remember that video i posted regarding the Loomis way of drawing heads?
That person has uploaded lots of other great videos, like this one:
youtube;V3WmrWUEIJo]http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=V3WmrWUEIJo
At 6.18 he says "Learn the rules, and then learn how you can break the rules, to improve your drawing"
wich i think is just great.
EDIT: oh no, what am i doing wrong here?

Thanks! My characters are definitely not as resolved as I'd like. I was going for more of a shock/awe feeling here but I know I need to get some more anatomy sorted out for sure

Ah no you misunderstand; I was saying that I don't like the way many art teachers push the idealised proportions of 7/8 heads tall, etc. I'm definitely not going to shy away from anatomy sketches haha
Also I done a video

My bad; EMI don't like it when I use Pink Floyd in my videos. It should be working now
For some reason my audio change isn't taking effect, but it's not blocked any more so perhaps it'll take a little while for them to process the change
