I know most of you typically hate these kinda posts where I ask for your help with no new content or anything but if any of you can share any thoughts it'd be most helpful!
So I can make 4 entries into this local art exhibition, and people can buy the pieces. I'm thinking of these 4, unless I can find the time to do another before friday to replace one (most def the woman)
[img_thumb]https://dl.dropbox.com/u/7346219/Arts/New/pugnebula.jpg[/img_thumb][img_thumb]https://dl.dropbox.com/u/7346219/Arts/New/SCANtigerredux.jpg[/img_thumb][img_thumb]https://dl.dropbox.com/u/7346219/Arts/New/eaglenebula.jpg[/img_thumb][img_thumb]https://dl.dropbox.com/u/7346219/Arts/New/womanscan.jpg[/img_thumb]
do you think £35 each is a reasonable sale price (30% commission for the exhibition)? I hate pricing artwork; by far the most stressful, unsavoury, arbitrary part of being an artist. it's taking place over like 3 weekends over the next month so there should be a lot of potential buyers. should I ask for a lot more? a lot less? It's a total headache.
Well I would set a minimum amount of dosh you would part with any given piece for - not what you think they're worth, just the lowest number you would say well ok I'd let it go for 20 pounds or whatever the sum might be. Then for every hour you spent on each piece, add a tenner or something.
This is just guesswork on my part for how much you value your work, but you see what I'm driving at, make yourself a little formula so you don't have to do the thinking every time you want to sell something.
I quite like that idea Mako! Oddly, the pieces I think are better seem to take less time! Like the pug in the ufo only took under 3 hours, while the woman took about 5 :v:
But yeah I think I'll do that, thanks.

E: Btw I sent you a message idk if it helps
I think I might prefer that too! I'll ask around my family, housemates, etc, see if they agree.
Goddamnit, Maloof, I love your work. Do you sell prints because I would buy the shit out of them and hang them ony my wall. Can you give a little insight in your techniques?
I'm genuinely stoked that you're interested!
I do have a Society6 account for my comic which I can definitely expand to contain my other paintings. However Sociey6 takes rather a large cut; for a 6x10 inch print (of which only 4x8 inches contain the image, the rest is the border) it costs $12, and that's without any profit to me! So I tend to bump up the price to 15, which gives me about $3 profit, but it's still not ideal.
For New Zealand-based people I can get a print out for much, much cheaper (I can get an A3 print printed and shipped for like $5) but for worldwide customers I'd like to find a cheaper alternative.
Do y'all know a well priced platform I can use to sell my stuff, or is Society6 already the cheapest one out there?

My technique isn't something I tend to consciously think about at present, but I'm sure I could write a little on it. I also have some recordings of me painting if you'd prefer to see those! Let me know

Hey Mako did you say you've done a couple of those cooperative paintings before? I'm thinking I'll set up a free-for-all thread for one later today but I don't want to provide a shitty base for people to start with. I know it's just supposed to be some indistinct forms and colours but still
Any tips?

Alright, I kept redrawing one patch of grass because I didn't want to spend a lot of time just to realise that I was doing it all wrong.
Will draw the whole pic.

Ermm well there was a FFA collab thread before and it went notably badly, I don't know if you were there or not. After a few steps, the piece got branched out into like five different pieces that different people wanted to follow through, so everyone was working on something different and nothing really got finished or looked great in the end - and so it died after the first attempt iirc.
I've only done one btw (two person collab) but it was tonnes of fun. Starting another one I think, and aside from that I'm down to do more with whoever.
Making a thread for it does pose some problems here, I think it's difficult to make it work unless everyone involved is very team-player and are all at a reasonably accomplished level. Even something like using a custom brush that somebody else might not have could unbalance the piece. It's easy to mediate stuff between two or probably three people but with several random contributors, I don't know. If you did I think your best shot would be to work out a couple of good ground rules, like you must make a blank "reserved" post before you start taking a turn so that people can't work on the same step and ninja each other and cause division.
On the other hand you could make some sort of art collab dating agency thread for everyone in CC who's interested in doing one, put all of the names you get in a week into a hat and pair CCers off at random :v: then they could post results after another week. If it went well, shuffle the partners and go again.
Good luck, if you decide to do something I'll participate as I said.

Sweet as! Thanks =D
I actually quite liked the whole branching-off thing that happened in that previous thread; the final timeline that somebody compiled was really interesting to look at with all the different versions and paths that the image took

The grass is looking a bit too bright, but I imagine you could quick fix that with some sort of overlay. But actually on second looking I kind of like how bright it is in some areas, particularly on the right of the painting, it all looks really nice over there, its just on such a wide expanse (as on the left) the vibrancy stands out to much i feel, so maybe tone it down on the left had side?
In terms of perspective its right on now, much MUCH better than the original, the painting has a lot more depth and is also staring to look lots more textured :)
Better. Try to be more aware of the original image though. Right now the forest in the back is way too tall as well as the tower and its ruining the perspective.
The castle thing doesn't really fit in the picture - its colour is too pure grey and the shading doesn't really work on it that well. The other two major bad things are the sky colour, and in some areas you have ""overblended"" the clouds with almost perfectly smooth gradients
your stuff is finally getting neat, maloof. which is great because you always had great ideas but couldn't simulate them properly.

Thanks! With your guys' help I'm identifying the issues in my work (most notably my tendancy to draw with a single material, as well as my tendancy to apply very simple and often wrong rules to depth, such as 'nearby things must be more saturated/higher contrast than distant thing").
I'm also loosening up and not spending too much time on decision making. The mountains in the first image above took about 10-15 seconds at the most to choose the colours.
I see a couple of issues with the images above, mainly the building material that the structure is made from in the first image could be a lot cooler to differentiate the material from that of the mountains in the background
I've also been watching a the FZDSchool Design Cinema WHILE painting which helps to give me ideas for colour pallets and also gives me some extra confidence

Hey, does anybody else wear a glove while digital painting? I find that the plastic surface of the tablet can often result in the hand sticking to it, especially if the day is even a little bit humid. I use a cheap (and not very warm) fingerless glove to let me slide my hand around and get really smooth lines
I don't have a fingerless glove so if I use my tablet on humid days I usually resort to sliding a bit of paper under my hand. Solves the problem to a degree, but is quite annoying in itself.

Ah yeah haha
It works!
I'm not sure what country you're in, but we have $2 shops that sell cheap, low quality stuff. If you can get some fingerless gloves or a regular glove and cut the fingers off it could be great!
