Okay here's another paint, tell me what you think.
It's pretty sweet! The rocky canyon needs to be brighter and more saturated near the lava, where the light radiated by it lights up the rocks
I just had the odd urge to draw ":3" face and fluffy black hair. I'm sorry
Here's a bit of what my first year architecture program is like, it should be called topography with a little bit of architecture thrown in... I can't tell you how much stupid cardboard I've blown through this semester but we're finally done with projects this semester! This was my final project's model, the drawings and site plans etc. I'm sure you guys don't really want to see. This is first year architecture too and they tell us this is just the basic [IMG_thumb]http://i.imgur.com/8Z7rT.jpg[/IMG_thumb] [IMG_thumb]http://i.imgur.com/EGVgU.jpg[/IMG_thumb] [IMG_thumb]http://i.imgur.com/pcKy8.jpg[/IMG_thumb] [IMG_thumb]http://i.imgur.com/oNnHc.jpg[/IMG_thumb] [IMG_thumb]http://i.imgur.com/OupDs.jpg[/IMG_thumb] excuse the big images and subpar pics
Sloppy head turning animation All the frames http://i.cubeupload.com/wrPfEP.png Kinda hard to tell if that's lava, if it is it doesn't feel hot, it should radiate a small amount of light and not be so dull and washed out in color. I think lava usually goes from bright white to orange, to red, to black as it cools. Looks nice anyway.
Looks great mostly, but the two frames on the extreme right of the picture (top and bottom) have very sunken cheeks, as though he's missing cheekbones

Quite a lot of errors but I'm quite happy with it, you learn so much of about value with these. It's always darker than I expect.
Working on something
Well, I started drawing something for my friend's birthday, in charcoal. Since I've started taking a liking to charcoal, I decided late last night that I should try painting over the whole thing for some reason, because I might end up liking acrylic paint, too. Never again. Time to start over.
-nope-
-the pic is ugly and I feel bad for posting it- Current wip. Square brushes? never again. Ffs I saw Malof making really nice mountains in an easier way. I feel like a blindman trying to find a way out of a maze. Gotta hit every wall with my head. And seems like I am just trying to smash my way out, which hurts.
use flat/thin brushes they are easier to use
I can't get the general idea of it. That thing is done from reference, but I don't like it at all. How do people make that effect of "flowing" paint? Low opacity? You can see it on the mountain here http://i.imgur.com/gAx0i.jpg and here http://fc00.deviantart.net/fs70/i/2012/030/8/8/reference_ridges_by_mrorigano-d4o4vas.jpg and everywhere
You're just filling in the shades as if it's a print. Use lower opacity and more brush strokes towards the direction of the inclined angle of the mountain surface. Enable tilt sensitivity if you have a tablet.
If you got control over pressure sensitive opacity you can make really amazing things efficiently.
I have both tilt and pressure control. I tried doing that stuff, but still... Basically the point is that I select a new color every few strokes and that makes the color variation?

And seems like I am just trying to smash my way out, which hurts.
I'd be interested to see the pic Don't be ashamed of posting work that you don't like here; if we can't see it then we can't give you tips on how to improve! Which image were you talking about with my mountains? We had a big thing months ago about not using low opacity brushes. I say stuff it; if you know what to look for and how to make it look good, then low-opacity can be a great method of working. I generally tend to keep my brushes at 80-90%. You just have to be concious of the colours that are coming out of the low-opacity brush strokes and whether they are desirable or not: Say you wanted to blend a green highlight with a blue-ish shadow on your mountain. You wouldn't just paint the whole thing green then use a low opacity to blend a single blue-ish tone over the top; you'll notice that the in between the solid green and solid blue, where it's not fully blended and you've got a mix of both those colours, will look really dull and desaturated, and most likely a bit unrealistic. You want to pick a bunch of tones (3-4 maybe) and put them in so that you manually create a bit of a fade (like a really blocky gradient), and then use low opacity to mix each of those 3 or 4 together. You can also just use two colours and low opacity then go back and touch up the dull bits if that suits your painting method better. Bear in mind that I"m not saying everything you do has to be high-saturation or not a dull tone; everything is subjective to what you're painting, the lighting conditions, etc. This tripped me up when I first heard it and I thought that every image had to be really colourful; it doesn't have to be at all, especially if your subject matter (a foggy morning, a massively polluted city) calls for a dull and monotonous pallet.

I started learning to paint digitally today. Here's a little painting I made. It's really rough, but its purpose was really just to learn some basics. Any pointers you guys could give would be greatly appreciated.

Was it from a ref? (use refs as much as you like!)
That's damn fine for a first attempt! Do you have any previous experience? Was it from a ref? (use refs as much as you like!)
Thanks a ton! I don't have any real experience, just a bit of casual drawing. And yeah, it was based off of this picture.

Anybody have soem really good tutorial videos im really stuck atm. I wanna make something really stylized but with lots of little details but im having so much trouble. :(
After looking at my previously posted picture, I decided I really needed to work on my colors, so I did a couple paintings working on color choice and blending. They still really aren't much, but I loved working with sky colors. If you notice anything that I could improve or work on, I would be highly appreciative of criticism. My first attempt at blending: I wanted to add some solid forms in with things so I decided to do a bit of a mountain range:
I took a nap yesterday, and I had a weird dream there was a guy who was a heavy smoker in it and I did a sketch of what I sort of remember him looking like [t]http://fc08.deviantart.net/fs70/f/2012/327/9/5/guy_by_chaplinsolus-d5ly5ze.png[/t]
