Do you guys have any particular books or websites you would recommend to a person who's just starting out learning fundamental tenets of art?

Hey everyone, I just got a tablet and want to start making some things, but I'm having trouble understanding how to block in values. Can you guys kind of explain it?
Getting better with my digital work. Experimenting with character concepts and golden rectangles, although I didn't do much measuring so it's probably way off.

my first landscape. I don't know what I'm doing :v: "The valleys of the north are perilous indeed. It might be tricky sometimes due to your shadow but at least give it a go or it's heavily skewed when we see it. I can't give you much watercolour technique advice, but I don't really think watercolour is appropriate for representational pieces done in solid colour blocks. It's more for impressionistic and intuitive styles Note that I can't paint in watercolour myself so this is all second-hand advice - you probably could do what you're aiming for well in watercolour but I THINK you're giving yourself a hard time going with (and especially starting out with) that medium.

Hielo, i took some inspiration from reading through threads here and decided to make some crazy ass architecture thing, but now i have no idea what to add to it, imo it has some cool potential but i'll leave that up for you guys to decide. thumbed since bigass phone pic [thumb]http://filesmelt.com/dl/IMG_20121204_165514.jpg[/thumb]

Just add more and more detail with light lines, then finish it with bold ones. Don't try to make the final drawing in the first go. Also guys, I present you my first watercolor pencil drawing! I loved the process, and if I may say so about myself, me and watercolor pencils have a lot of potential! Would be great if you guys nitpick all the little details you find off to your eye. (except the masterfully done gradient in the sky, I see that)

You guys accept literature work, right?
Of course, but it's likely that very few people will read it. It's never a personal thing; I guess most people (including myself) don't feel we have the time to read a lot of text Feel free to post it though!
Thanks, It's was my final blog post for creative-nonfiction, and it's a bit sloppy. My last journal was a free write, so I decide to write about this dream I had.
During Thanksgiving, I had a weird dream. I was Tamiko; (A rat-girl I draw too much when I’m bored) and I lived in this underground city of some sort. It was like a cold war bunker, but it wasn’t. No one cares of the lost, no one cared of anything. The cold war shelter does things to you; Makes you hollow, blind, and you’ll probably die if you ever find out about the real world. The poor man right here hand himself in his misery. Only poor, young little Tamiko noticed he was gone. She sees everything, she hears everything, and she just doesn’t understand why no one did anything. She should of done something. She was the old man’s neighbor; She could of visit the him or said hello, or whatever. Old people like young conversations. Probably the man was just alone, but how could she know? He seem to be fine. Some strange man, big resemblance to David Tennant. Knocks at the door. “I have something to show you Tamiko.” he said. His voice echoed into the empty living room. In the bedroom, Tamiko awoke from her grieving meditation. “Alright, Fleece,” said Tamiko, “Here I come.” They walked town the flight of stairs with golden rails. “I’m not gonna lie to you,” he said sternly, “I’ll probably have to be rough with you for this.” “How so?” Said Tamiko. “Still Grieving for the old man?”…. …. Fleece brought Tamiko to an arcade, around where games meant for children under Tamiko’s age group. All of them were educational, and at least marketed to be educational. he dragged her between her arms like a bag of rice. “Why did you bring us here?” Tamiko said. “Look around.” Fleece said, “What do you see?” “Arcade games,” Tamiko replied. “Really bad ones too.” “That’s the key word.” Fleece said, “The key word is ‘bad’. Life is like a game, you see.” “A bad game…” The thought lingered in young Tamiko’s mind for a moment… The arcade mascot was at the exit when they tried to leave. He was a giant, bear thing. “Gwa-Hey kids!” said the mascot. “You can’t leave the arcade with a smile.” Fleece made a false grin. “Here you go.” he said rudely as looked into the soulless eyes of the mascot. Tamiko, on the other smile, she was too busy being impatient to get out… And then I woke up… It was wierd.
Picked up a paintbrush today promptly put it back down :v:
I really like it. Very space-y to me. [editline]4th December 2012[/editline] Don't wanna commit to the word "Mars" because there are many more much more interesting red planets out there.
I'm in the process of making something, it isnt drawn but it's going to be along the lines of taking a comic i like and spreading every page onto one big canvas onto the wall, trouble is i dont want to actually tear each individual page out to do so because i'm odd like that, what would be a good idea to do so and how would it be done?
my sorry attempts at coloring anybody got some tuts on how to use water colors/ water color pencils/ water color inks?
Ah, why didn't you take a normal picture? Watercolors are amazing, you don't know how much I love them now, just because they're so versatile in style and technique. You should be able to quickly develop your own technique with them soon enough. Your current main problem is bold outlines and an overall flat feel created by lack of contrast, you don't want that, you want to demonstrate perspective and shape with shadows, not outlines. Do a sketch in a light 4H pencil and then go over it so you don't see the outlines anymore. You're also using flat tones and colors, try to use a light wash to first set up some basic tones and colors and then go in and refine the shapes and then make the shadows more visible and clear and then really define and bold the shadows and individual shapes. The trick behind watercolors is to use the white page as a strong highlight and use that strong contrast to make your piece pop out, otherwise it'll look flat. I also don't recommend the pan watercolors if you want to get into watercolor more, the tubes are easier to work with and they don't get all smudged up and are easier to mix than the pans. Here's some good examples of a few different styles if it helps or inspires you. More illustrative stuff for somebody elses' literary project [editline]5th December 2012[/editline] wow manually resizing it in photoshop before uploading instead of relying on DeviantArt to scale it down for me makes it much sharper
on the first one you have some really cool ideas flowing but you didn't actually give any focus to the ice graveyard. it's a really morbid concept that could be worked on differently, but you added some huge ass fantasy house on the background and it really drags away the attention you're trying to bring into the ice graveyard. the ice tombs are REALLY well thought and it's a really cool concept, and i think that if you worked on different tiny thumbnails you'd be able to do a way better job at finding a perfect composition for them. the idea's just too good to be thrown away in a mediocre composition, and the way you displayed that they're a graveyard (well at least i'm thinking they are) with flowers could also be looked up into. the simple fact that you added flowers resting by the ice cube just kicked FUCKING ASS. so stick with that, but please try different compositions, try different ways to display the whole scene. [editline]5th December 2012[/editline] also the fact that the house in the bg is a dark orange and the cubes are blue sorta bugs my eyes. it makes it uncomfortable to stare at the ice cubes because in my peripheral vision there's this little buggy castle in the bg and it's fadingly screaming for attention. my eye keeps switching between the ice cubes and the castle thing and it sorta bugs me because i can't focus my eye on something. if you want to sloooooowly guide the viewers eyes into the castle then you should have it blend with the background, so the viewer follows the ice cubes from right to left and then ends up in the corner of the piece, where the castle is. [editline]5th December 2012[/editline] apparently the 2nd panel is a sequel to the first? also make the human silhouettes more apparent in the "tombs". maybe make it so their hands are sticking out near the edge of the ice so it makes it a bid more morbid and unsettling. also give more definition to the flowers, because the flowers are in my opinion the most important object of the whole piece. [editline]5th December 2012[/editline] sorry if i'm saying too much stuff i'm just fascinated with the whole ice cube tomb shit you have going on. i don't know if you really need to change angles for the first one but please give more attention to the flowers. the fire torch near the flower sorta drags away the attention you'd want the viewer to have on them. it's just that once you spot the flower your brain unwraps the whole piece and it becomes something reaaaaaaally creepy and this is amazing.
