I really want to get into writing again but I'm so lazy. When Navnowrimo came around I was going to write at least a page to get myself back into the spirit, but nope. I have a work on a school computer I'll probably post.
I vaguely remember your writing, please don't
I don't think I could help myself after seeing Firefall's concept art for the engineer armor.

I don't think that turned out terrible. I suck at drawing and art in general.
Hah, at first I thought this was a screenshot from a game. Closer inspection reveals that it looks quite bland. Flames should be brighter because they're flames. Flames are bright. There could be a little more contrast too, right now everything blends together. I don't know if this is any better but I messed around with the Exposure tool in Photoshop. Part of it was that I was using my friend's tablet rather than my own larger one. It was a lot more cramped than I'm used to (not like I've done anything good on my tablet anyway, just where I have the most practice).
I decided to see if I can draw on my laptop turned out pretty well
You did that with a trackpad? Why would you put yourself through that Maybe try a pencil
I don't think that turned out terrible. I actually used my mouse and it's supposed to look cartoony/out of proportion, I should probably mention
It's a novice mistake to disregard anatomy in cartooning. Making something look cartoony is about taking existing anatomy and distorting it, rather than just playing with a basic figure into you get a shape you like.
Is this an acceptable human proportion? Neck: 1/4 Head Body: 2 Heads Arm: 2+1/2 Head Leg: 3 Heads People usually say that the body is 3, and the leg is 4, but whenever I follow that rule, my figures always look too long.
That's a bit too exact really, I advise working under more basic rules of thumb like the crotch being 1/2 of the body regardless of the height, stuff like that I mean you can't say people's necks are X, there's a lot of variance there! Plus men and women should vary, so it's not really acceptable to have a strict base "human" proportion at all [editline]8th December 2012[/editline]
I actually used my mouse and it's supposed to look cartoony/out of proportion, I should probably mention
That might actually be worse than a trackpad idk :v: And what salmon said. No one can get into art and become good via cartooning alone and having an out of proportion "style" it's just lack of the knowledge of how to do it right You need skulls muscles tendons in your head to draw them in any way, stylised or not (and stylism is harder anyway because you can't reference it) Plus all the grace and flow you absorb through learning to draw realism even in a gestural way but with correct shapes and proportions. Don't get me wrong it's not a bad start per se, but you'll have a hard time ever getting better doing stuff like that. And I still say grab a pencil and don't worry about colour until you have some skill with that, it gives you so much less to worry about imo until you have some fundamentals to your name.
A quick illustration for that same client I'm supposed to be showing a town that uses giant mirrors to get sunlight during the darker months but buggered if I know how to convincingly paint giant mirrors seen from a distance
reminds me of this

You should probably try to add more focal points and get it to read better. don't forget about foreground, mid-ground and background.
I dont understand the whole mirror thing or what all the black actually is :(
-snip wrong thread again fuck-
Id like to hear your comments on the process with wich i invented a fantasy race i dubbed Bracaboga (Known to humans as Slaug, or Troll for good measure.) And perhaps this is inherently interesting to some of you. (note: the process was very slow, stretching over months of swapping between a multilude of projects.) My initial idea was to approach a coalition of fantasy esque creatures, meant to be the main antagonists to a civilization of steampunk esque humans, Like you would approach a setup of videogame classes. So my idea was to create essentially a heavy weapons guy to tower over the roughly man-sized gnolls. So i came up with this. I began approaching their weaponry and technology, this is heavily dieselpunk, and ive moved away from the idea since then, in favor of a more savage native-american/maori esque culture. Though the way i did the faces here helped me zero in on their look. here i largely settled on their appearance, playing around with anatomy and expressions. Now finally here is the solid design, as seen in my own thread.

I Havent completed their background yet. Though there are some ideas i have pretty much settled on, For instance their native habitat is a vast, hellish marshland swamp, nestled around the vast giant-reptile infested jungles. Rippling with nightmarish creatures, such as anterfish-like drakes, Piranhas the size of small whales, and giant insects, for not to mention (but i did) innumerable diseases. They are not as inquisitive and divisive as more civilized peoples, though to mistake a slaug's sleepy demanor with stupidity is ill advised. Their architecture is limited to their large clusters of stilt-suspended huts. Their relationship with the other 'beast' races is one of convienience and not nescessarily loyalty or honor. They trade valuable medicines and exotic commodities for the more advanced weaponry they are not themselves able to manufacture. They do not have a centralized system of government, and are composed of thousands of large family-groups.

Thanks for the crits guys! I'm trying to figure out better ways of showing the idea

Two drawing assignments from school. Both used a reference, was mainly trying to recreate the light, shadow, and texture. The first used a picture reference, the second used a plaster cast of wrinkled fabric that I made. (If you think the hands look wonky, its an old woman's hands and she has arthritis which deforms them. Believe me, the ref picture looked just as strange. Though the bottom most pinky is a tad messed up in shape.) here's a sprite I made of a girl I met I know the arms are too short
The head should follow with the body and also you should speed it up a tad.
The head should follow with the body and also you should speed it up a tad.
If I made the head stick to the body rigidly the animation would look way stiffer than having the head lag behind a bit like this. I know it's not realistic but I like the motion of it, and it adds a lot of weight to it
It looks goofy moving the way it is, and still stiff.
Everything about the sprite is great, apart from the head bob. I totally get where you're coming from, because if the head and body move in unison, it'd look weird. Try and find an alternative, because as it is now, it sorta gives her a vulture neck kinda feel. Other than that, I really like it. Great art style, really well done.
Spent awhile this morning doing 60 second figure drawings. They're on paper though, so I probably won't post them Did a quick thumbnail on paper based on an idea I had last night, then took it into photoshop as a greyscale sketch
I'd like some critiques, criticism, and/or opinions on some of my art. Tell me what you think, and if you have any tips, all are accepted! I'm just a hobbyist when it comes to art right now, but I could become a professional artist at some point. I made this all digitally with a drawing tablet.
