Forgot to turn bg back on xD Here's the version with castle. I think it conveys something, which I like, differently from the mountain scene. though it kind of blends her into the bg :S
Composition feels a bit tight
Well, just finished the character, time to battle the background!
Mind if I add you on my list of great artists to follow and for inspiration? :v: Looks great.
I'm not much of an artist and I don't have a tablet. :c But I couldn't help it but to draw a response :v

He spilt the cup of water :c

I think this bg looks fine, any thought? The coconut tree helps, methink.
Not much sense of composition in terms of colour or form, too busy over the left side and there is not really any sense of depth through colour or clarity. The tree seems out of place and the lighthouse appears (at first glance and until we look closer) to be floating
There is absolutely no depth in the background. The coconut tree is more blurry than the lighthouse as well. The background is blurry all over whilst still sharp since there is no change in the blurriness. It contrasts way too much with the character which is super sharp all over. Depth and focus, you really need to implement it. I also think the lighthouse is unnecessary.

thanks for that saved them all
This is a cool overview of an artist I really like's work process in making the webcomic Copper. http://www.boltcity.com/workshop/copper_tutorial/index.html Dunno if anyone else will find use for it, but it was an interesting read for me.
What's better about the I3 then?
It has two strips rather than just one. I use the touch strips on my tablet for both brush size and zooming in and out.. With the I4 you only have 1 ring, and you have to constantly switch in between the modes before I zoom in or change brush sizes.. Also I prefer the touch strips to the ring, the ring forces you to actually drag your finger around, while with the strips you can just tap the bottom or top of the strip to get a bigger or smaller brush size. Or just drag up or down as well.
This is probably a long shot but did anyone here go to Pratt Institute in New York, or knows anyone that did?

Also the boat looks like a toy boat. If you follow a horizontal line from the boat to the shore on the left, then bring your eye back around to the foreground, you'll see there doesn't feel like nearly enough distance for the boat to appear so tiny

Alrighty, I'm done. Thank you guys for the cc :]
better but the image still feels very flat and it's hard to distinguish upon glancing on it what is background and what's her
I really love the rendering and style of the piece, just a few things that would have helped is that mountain shouldn't be behind her face, the nice blue sky would pop her red hair out a lot more. Background should be lightened a bit more and her a bit darkened/more contrast. As in atmospheric perspective. Look at the shadow of the curb coming in towards her, its the same value in the front as it is in the back.. Atmospheric perspective means it should at least get lighter as it goes further back during the day. And generally the composition is extremely heavy towards the left side of the image. Adding the sand castle or light house towards the right side would help a lot more with balancing the piece out. Something that's flattening out the piece is also the sharpness of the brushes texture you used in the clouds.. however pretty as they are, the detail in those brush strokes is too detailed and sharp and is competing with the barely detailed pretty lady in the front. Another way to pop her out into the foreground a bit better would be color contrast, as for right now she's pretty red centered, and the curb behind her is tinged with red.. if you were to make it a complimentary of red like green, or blue, you'd have an easier time separating her from the background.
I know saying this isn't helpful at all but I hate the background and feel like it looks like an image you took off of google and slapped behind the character. It doesn't fit at all with the character and just seems random and lacking depth and composition. The colors blend too much with the character for one thing and it makes the entire piece look WAY too cluttered. The piece looked much better when it was just in front of an orange background tbh, so i suggest you completely drop the idea of a complicated background and just do a random thing to just make character stand out? I just dont think a complicated background will work well for this. E: Wait, I didn't notice the new post. That's definitely better, but that boat still looks a bit out of place and for some reason the first thing I notice and look at is the cloud in the upper right.
to be honest it's so flat it's kind of like when tv shows take photographs/drawings/paintings and move elements around in them relative to the background to kind of create that pseudo 3d effect. basically it looks like you put one image on top of another. she doesn't really mesh with the scene at all. no sense of where she's standing or anything. you also have no atmospheric perspective and for a huge environment like that it's not doing u any favors at all.
Hey guys what's going on in this threa- >arguing with trolls >deerteens everywhere I think I should come back later.
Gah, I still need a lot more practice in landscape Here it is again, then Ima do some landscape painting next. Thank you all again for the cc, I think I know where to improve next :] I cropped it, and i think it foils out the character more:
When I 'release' Quiet Places Comic in about 12-24 hours time should I make a thread or no? Agree for yes, disagree for no. The idea here is to get exposure, not a high postcount
I'm the male voice! What d'you folks think of my singing?
it's a bit wobbly and not very confident, with a pretty limited range you have the 'voice' for that style of signing but the singing itself needs a lot of work
