I drew these as a base for smileys/emoticons on my friend's forum and I'd like to get input on what to modify.

Might want to reduce the detail if they are going to be smileys
Would look like a mess if it's 16x16
There probably gonna be more like 40x40, but I'll do that.

Doesn't look like it matters if it's going to be that big

Assuming you're going to go over the lines with the pen tool or something like that anyways
So how does this look now that it's actually in the format it's going to be? Think I could afford a little more detail?

I decided to get back into pencil drawing and bought a sketch pad and some pencils.
This is my first proper drawing in at least five years. Everything else has just been careless doodles while bored at school or work.
It's also my first time using charcoal pencils.

Any comments?
Edit:
Now that I finished it all I can see is everything that's wrong with it.

(Obligatory "I didn't ask for this" reply.)
But also, is he a chipmunk?
I think 90% of mistakes in sketching are due to getting too close and tight with your work. Keep a good physical distance away from the paper, and make sure not to overwork anything.
Also get your basic shapes down first, and work from biggest to smallest.
Quick note why I drew this, my ex girlfriend broke up with me, now came back and apologized etc etc.
her best friend though, fell in love with me, but I have no feelings for her, I just want my ex back...
Now she thinks it would be better if I go with her best friend even though she still has feelings for me, but just wants to see her happy... whatever, here's the pic.

Jensen's cheeks are way more square than this. It's probably the major problem with this drawing. There are other minor ones that you probably noticed, but I suck at explaining stuff... :/

Here's an anti-aliased version of the smiley. Thoughts?
Took some images of my friends after an airsoft war last week and tried my hand at running it through some filters and creating some color schemes...

Not really sure what I was going for, I woke up really early and started messing around. I had to cut from different threshold levels to get the amount of detail that I wanted in multiple areas, then make it look natural. Perhaps the diffuse glow filter was a bit much in hindsight.
yeah
no
I know :/, I really don't know what I was thinking. Thanks for the constructive criticism anyways friend.
Honestly I normally hate running anything through a pre-made filter but my graphic design teacher seems to think they made for a good element to base an entire project off of.

The main issue I have is the left side of his face (right from his perspective). It's too low and is too far to our left.
I would have fixed it, but I didn't notice it until it was too late since don't have an eraser that could erase the thick black hair along the jaw.
Here's the reference.
[t]http://images.wikia.com/deusex/en/images/8/8e/Jensen_augs_noshades.jpg[/t]
Shouldn't the face be a bit smaller? I feel like the lenght of his nose is bigger on your drawing than on the ref.
Actually happy with this one, despite the fact that I couldn't quite get the likeness right.

You can't really give criticism because even you don't know what you are trying to get. If I were you I'd use photoshop or illustrator and turn those into vectors manually rather than slapping filters on them.
WOO im like andy warhol WOO

Unf, really nice work. I love when something looks like a photo from far away/a thumbnail, but then the strokes are quite loose and rough up close. If you can do that you've really nailed the whole art thing.
On the downside, it's dim as fuck. A quick colour touchup would bring it out and make it less hard on the eye. Two second example - http://i.imgur.com/QSmv7.png
i like how dim it is. it's probably very accurate to the reference picture. your dgg version is horrible. he looks like a sweaty fucker under stage lights

Why do I suddenly have this whole contrasty as fuck reputation to me?!
I'm wondering the same thing.

Why would the photograph be that dark, that makes no sense
You're right though, I probably shouldn't have bothered posting my example at all, I just wanted to see how well the detail would hold out under a quick curves adjustment to make it decently visible. As it is now, it looks like it was already changed with levels or something because the background is so close to his skin tone.
Bottom line, I don't think it should be so dark. It makes me want to flick a light switch or something so I can actually see it easily.

Agree
There is tasteful (fuck I hate that word) use of dark images and then there is 'can't see a thing' use of dark images. If you go dark you should have bright lighting. It doesn't have to be film noir - you can have nice, gradual shadows coming in. But too dark means we have to strain to see anything, which is uncomfortable, and not ideal.
That's from a design view. In fine art you might want the viewer to have to look closely to make things out - it all depends on the message.
Why do I suddenly have this whole contrasty as fuck reputation to me?!
because you keep posting version of things with higher saturation/contrast????
because you keep posting version of things with higher saturation/contrast????
Uh, I increased the saturation and contrast on the painting to show 3v3ryb0dy what HE WANTED IT to look like. And then he was more satisifed with the other one somebody else posted that was WAAAY more saturated and contrasted than the one I did.
The other time is me pumping up the values on the pirate man's clothing. The arm got filled with lots of black just to make it fucking visible.
And well, that's all I've done and it's really recent.

"I never asked for these cheeks"
So I've been working with a programmer for about a year now, making little derpy games in Java. (We did get 11th out of 174 in a 3 day competition though) Today I got a text saying that he'd found a website where people would pay to have a programmer write a program for them or something.
That got me thinking that I should really be considering how to make money from art. I have decent digital painting skills, and I am fairly proficient at making 2D game sprites and artwork, including animations and texturing.
I know you have to work hard to get your work to a level where people can pay for it, but I think I'm just about at a point where some sucker might just fall for it.
So what I'm asking is, what field do I have the best luck in, and in general, where should I start?

Oh, and new WIP for that same friend. He wants a S.T.A.L.K.E.R. framed in his bedroom.
