I don't think you see pupils done like that anywhere in the manga style, but hey I'm shit so...
Youtube lesson on drawing eyes:

If you're interested in drawing in that style this guy seems to have good lessons!

I'll get back at this once I get a hang of coloring.

rendered a sketch

[editline]19th March 2012[/editline]
it looks unfinished but I don't really have time right now to finish it.
the horses fur looks realistically shiny, is it from reference?
the horse was drawn from head (the sketch), but I had a ref for the fur.
[editline]19th March 2012[/editline]
had to find a horse in a similar pose to make it work.
so i was like, lets draw a walrus.

so now im wondering, whats the secret to getting the proportions right, like, getting the sketch to match the proportions of the ref, cause i overlay'd the ref in photoshop after i was done and it was always off by like 20%. when i tried to fix it on the first one it just made everything worse.

How about measuring the significant features on the photo (e.g. the lake) and then placing some marks on your paper so that you know where to fit things in?
I thought that second one looked pretty cool though, much better than anything I could do!

The time you spent finishing his face would have been better used in getting the perspective and anatomy right.
I don't understand how the building works.
Thanks for the tips, yeah its funny I couldn't see that the whole time and now its obvious!
And for some general advice for people who want to draw cartoons or manga or anything that requires continuous stylised figurative drawing, learn realism and proper human proportions first. The more knowledge and experience you have under your belt, the better you'll be able to simply your drawings into your own style.
The above is really the only crit amateur manga drawings deserve, merely because by starting off your learning curve with stylised drawing will CRIPPLE your improvement rate. If you ever want to be good at this stuff, you'll need to know how to draw a person properly; otherwise you'll always be an amateur. This is the harsh truth.

Use of colour is nice, and the style of simplification works well.

First off, your canvas colours are bleach-drinkingly, eye-bleedingly awful and I don't understand how you work on them whatsoever.
As for proportions, try working fast with focus on gesture and aspect, not details or features or whatever. Take in your subject not as a 3d form, but as a shape on your screen. Then break down that shape into component shapes; they can overlap, it's the flow and bulk of the figure that matters. If you warm up like this it might help you to develop your eye for proportion.

That might be somewhat effective, it won't do him any favours in terms of technique or skill though. Plus it's a gateway to tracing bits and pieces of studies when you hit dead ends, and various other unscrupulous activities
I'll stop being an ass-head

Well to be fair we were given this as a reference:

So I was just going by that.
And the building is supposed to be a saloon type thing.

Looks good, but you might fix the symmetry of that wine glass before you start painting it out too much.
I think that's just the angle of the photo, I mapped everything out with a ruler beforehand.

Drawing quick and violent is entertaining.
