I feel like anime is a waste of talent, in that if it's not different enough to distinguish itself from the rest, it's just going to fade into the endless sea of anime. Yes there's good examples of it, like the ghibli movies. But generally even the most well drawn anime is the same as every other well drawn anime if it doesn't have anything that sets it apart. It's a style that's pretty over saturated as it is, and so unless you have something new and unique to spin it into, which doesn't come by often (not that you can't try), drawing anime is squandering of talent.
There also bad cartoons from the West side but I rarely see anyone bitching about it.
I don't believe drawing an eastern-inspired style is bad, it is only when you have no real basics.

ive never enjoyed anime and im not a fan of the art style but im not going to be that ignorant about it

I'm trying to get an ok level of understanding with it so I can do it quickly and without wasting time tweaking like I am right now. I've been doing a bunch of misc drawing commissionry lately and I realized after getting a few requests things that I need to actually, like, know what I'm doing again. I think it's a perfect use of talent if you're makin' some cash
edit
also what you said down there makes more sense, if you can't stand out it's easy to not get anywhere with it at all
kind of like every art-related job market

Oh in that case, then I do agree
There also bad cartoons from the West side but I rarely see anyone bitching about it.

there's a good side and a terrible side to each style, though anime is REALLY easy to end up making something terribly generic looking
western stuff is good when it works, but there's so many silly arguments over how it's better because it's smoother animated or something, based on terrible preconceptions that anime is all slideshow cookiecutter junk, and western cartoons are all disney production quality
I'd like to sample a whole range of styles, I've been doing lots of experimentation in general lately, but nothing to really brag about.
also I roughed the whole thing out painterly just to block shapes and as I've gotten more into it I started adding lines just to quick-sharpen it out. My biggest concern is just making the whole thing the right shape, much less look 'finished', so all the shading has been an effort to help me think a bit more about what shapes are where and keep me tweaking things to look more symmetrical/whatever
in other news I made myself a square-brush in paint tool SAI and absolutely love it, I don't even know why
if you continued with the painterly style, i think it woulda looked nice, maybe with some simplification
if you continued with the painterly style, i think it woulda looked nice, maybe with some simplification
oh jesus, I colored the lines in and started highlighting to bring out the edge of the nose and stuff, but somehow that made the proportions of the eyes suddenly pop in my brain and the whole thing looks terrible now, haha. Probably gonna do some simpler sketches now that I have the general idea in my head. I'll leave you with the result
animu shouldn't be so painterly, I'm just gonna rough it with pencil sketchy stuff
you guys are all so silly
I don't want to stir up any more shit but you just gave a long rant about taking and giving critique properly when your critique was just:
and
Neither of those are particularly constructive. Just saying the face looks like a man is basically just as bad as saying the anatomy is wrong and not elaborating on it.
That said, Detlef, you really could do with taking this sort of thing less personally and you definitely shouldn't just stop posting because of it.
And she has all right to ignore what I said. That's my point.
I am the master of hypocrisy, always have been, always will be, do as I say, never do what I do.
damn dgg
though I do have to say there has been a lot more harsh critiquing and nitpicking of stuff detlef does lately, compared to others. It's very minute at times but things like that snarky comment about something needing antlers, and the really over-critical picking at that girl with the ram horns or whatever. Det's stuff is crazy, but it seems the harder she works at something the harder some people really jab at it
Dangit Bobby!
I completely agree there, and I have always brought that up when people has bitched at Detlef in the past. People fucking jump the gun on her for no reason all the time, and that's why I'm telling her she needs to learn how to ignore it. Both parties are doing wrong things.
The better you get obviously the more people will bitch. It's a subconcious jealousy thing.
I get ya, though I think the face shape is still feminine on a strictly realistic scale, though very youthful. early teenager cheeks kinda vibe I get from a handful of things, which honestly is in the right place for the characters involved.
I can see some femininity in it after having watched it a good 6-8 times. But it's really subtle and it's more manly than not. I have no idea what makes it manly, but I think it's just the general lack of facial features and how the face doesn't differ too much from all her other faces, which have been strictly males. It needs some feminine touches, I just don't know what those touches are personally.
Maybe it's something a simple as eyelashes, maybe the nose needs to be different or maybe the mouth needs a more pink tint? I dunno.
I remember anime hate being epidemic-level, like people would derail a thread just to bitch about someone having an anime avatar
Yeah, it's not there anymore and thank fuck for that. I still want to derail a thread to bitch about someone having an anime avatar though. I'm pretty damn anti-anime myself when it comes to drawing.
What software do you guys use to draw digitally? I have been using GIMP for ages, because I can't get SAI to work anymore, but it just doesn't have the features I wish it had.
Something I draw with corel painter trial something like a month ago. I want to find a light software for my laptop which has simple features as, rotating, layers, tablet pressure. I hope you understand what I mean.

Nose and eyes are in a different perspective to the cheeks/eyes/bones I suppose you could say
Also her right eye is sliding wayyy off
Something to remember about the shape of the face: if you find the points of your cheekpoints, above them is where eyes typically end and above that the eyebrows curve off around the sides of the face/brow. So even with big ass anime eyes, you gotta be careful that they don't turn the corner. For a better idea what I mean, look in a mirror and tilt your head right back. Your eyebrows wrap around your head a whole lot more than it seems.
Getting the hang of this perspective nonsense

redoodled and added a bit of an expression kinda

Inufin, I recently got into paint tool SAI, it's insanely good once you get the hang of it. I honestly stumble if I try drawing in photoshop now that I'm all used to the shortcuts and little fiddlybits
the stabilization is absolutely glorious, but the bugs in the program (maybe just the english-remake?) prevent me from using the side-buttons on my tablet pen without causing some major issues in being able to switch to any other program. I haven't even tried setting up the function buttons/slide pads on my tablet itself, though I'm used to not using them because photoshop borked up in recognizing buttons without throwing a shitfit a while back and I just got used to my hand being on the keyboard for functions
how you have the hair as this big block of messyness while everything else is relatively smooth it looks not so great
Other things are looking nicer though like the proportions
Yeah, I used SAI before, but it stopped working for some point, the windows were all streched out and I couldn't save the files properly, I have no clue what caused it and the problem happens even if I re-install it.
Not sure if SAI has the option to use different brushes what kind I am looking for, if I got it to work again, I should check out. But usually it is rather easy for me to see if a drawing was done with SAI, because all the sketches look similar. :v:

same linework from the sketch, the scribbly hair works OK with the darker color
I've been used to SAI, because Photoshop wouldn't work correctly in my old computer, when using the graphic tablet (there was always a gap of one second between using my tablet pen and what appeared on the screen). Sai is good personally but lacks of some features compared to Photoshop, such as the lack of forms and text tools (but you can still save your files as .psd in SAI)
I tend to work in SAi (drawing & coloring) and Photoshop (coloring & editing) both.

i think the style is nice, almost gorillaz-ey but its starting to go too far into anime territory with the shiny gradient eyes. i reckon flat colours on the eyes would look way better

not really too concerned with the eyes as-is, but I do have to do some figuring out with a style that isn't so flat and simple

Why is she pissed?
I feel like an idiot. SAI wasn't working because I was trying to run it with windows 7, I had to set it to compatible mode with XP and now it works fine.
Yay.
