Brushes in Sai rotate depending on the direction of the stroke
it makes square brushing so much fun the only real problem is that if you use something like my custom flat brush here, it has an issue where it will chop up if your curve is too harsh to rotate smoothly on [t]http://img402.imageshack.us/img402/6656/screenshot2012032801094.png[/t] still it's incredibly fun playing with them. Dump the brush .bmp below into C:\[location you told SAI to install]\PaintTool SAI English Pack\elemap, then run start-sai.exe instead of just sai.exe in the main folder, which should update the brushes. - my flat brush, pretty good for blocking out shapes. also pay attention to the scale next to the shape selection- it controls the softening of the brush, which is good to play with depending on what you're aiming for. I keep my flat brush around 50. [t]http://img826.imageshack.us/img826/6065/screenshot2012032801271.png[/t]
You know how in Photoshop you can get custom brushes that place images along the brush stroke (or seem to) - images like the silhouettes of leaves, etc? Is it possible to do that in Sai? I want to try building up texture/adding detail in that way (random placement of small dots on a plain of grass to imply flowers, etc)
I'm not so sure of that, though it's easy enough to cheat your way around and make one flower and clone it around a bunch manually. I never liked the photoshop brushes that randomly throw around shapes, too uncontrolled

I used to be very anti-textures and anti-custom-brushes until I realised that all it does essentially is mimic the act of adding sand to your paint to create impasto or pressing an object into still-wet paint to create an impression
there aren't too many good resources for sai's textures, the ones I found loope terribly and just looked bad. I gotta dig through my material library for a bunch of good tiling bump maps, finally put all those weird grungy ones I got to use.
"finished" the skull any comments?
I'm unsure if I want to finish this.
You should block out all the general colours in the scene rather than starting from one point and trying to finish it all from there. [editline]28th March 2012[/editline]
Trying to apply on my personal drawings what I've learned so far in progress
The rightmost one looks like a caucasian just painted brown. There's no racial traits there.
"finished" the skull any comments?
it's very smooth, which is great rendering-wise but I feel that a skull should have a harder look to it in certain areas. Pretty cool, sorry I didn't comment on your earlier set, stuff's all good but this is the one thing I'd have mentioned before
You should never use pictures that are already rendered flat for reference. You'll just be looking at how the lines curve without any understanding.
Thanks for the tip, yeah I really should try drawing some real stuff from real photos
You should block out all the general colours in the scene rather than starting from one point and trying to finish it all from there.
I probably should do that. It's just that I've got a weird way to render my stuff.
Like I hate painter but love photoshop.
Do tell?
I use Photoshop all the time, and don't really feel inclined to try out SAI. Should I?
More WIP stuff -Took about 30 min.
I use Photoshop all the time, and don't really feel inclined to try out SAI. Should I?
Matter of preference [editline]28th March 2012[/editline] I like Sai because it blends colours, unlike photoshop which just uses transparency. This means that I can mix colours into each other as I would if I were working with wet-on-wet paint. It also means I can work in the way I feel comfortable (mixing colours on the canvas). I think that's technically correct, anyway
The rightmost one looks like a caucasian just painted brown. There's no racial traits there.
I have no problem with drawing black male characters, but female ones are more tricky to me (especially if I want to make them pretty) I heard it was a matter of lips and cheekbones, but I don't want something that looks too ridiculous. Does anyone have some tips about that ?

Does anyone have some tips about that ?
Take a look at skulls and bone structure of the heads, you'll see differences in jaws and skull shape. http://mathildasanthropologyblog.wordpress.com/2008/07/23/racial-differences-in-skull-shape/ Start from there, and then study some other features like eyelids, noses and lips.
i like photoshop and i dont think i'll ever switch but it would be nice to have a better way of blending colours. you can use the wet media brush tool but then things get a bit complex because it simulates brush bristles in 3d and all that. when i used corel painter i just didnt think the brushes worked that well, curves had jagged edges and they only seemed to work properly when doing strokes, trying to just do a dot on the canvas either produced nothing or it went wrong and produced a weird shape
playing with this some more. I have no idea what I'm doing anatomically it's just a matter of tweaking things to where I think they look good. I should look up refs for ears because I know these are tiny, but I'm not sure where I'm going between stylized and realish [t]http://s3.amazonaws.com/data.tumblr.com/tumblr_m1lho1AtM21rn0i37o1_1280.png[/t]
still looks a bit weird for an anime chick. I guess its because there's too many details
like I said earlier, I'm trying to play with styles and, though it is anime-ish, I'm way too finnicky about light and end up shading semi-realistically and that conflicts a bit here's a non-shaded version- [t]http://i.imgur.com/84Krz.png[/t] I should work more on just sketching out a bunch of different poses and expressions to practice the base form if I want to develop it out a bit more stylistically, particularly aiming away from 'anime' and just being something more illustrative, I guess?

I did a sketch yesterday, just finished the vectors. It's a logo for something.
Thinking of upping this and putting it on my longboard.
It's a consdeeracy maaaan
Anyone know any good tutorials for hand-painted textures? I can't texture for shit and I really need help with it.
First: Do you want to learn how to draw comic style or realistic?
[t]http://s3.amazonaws.com/data.tumblr.com/tumblr_m1ln4uIp2A1rn0i37o1_1280.png[/t] it keeps happening
