i think you need to do some still life and then life drawing before you move on to making your own characters and such.
Well, I have been. I just had the figure so I slapped a ton of shit on it. But you have a point, thanks.

I wanted to ask you guys, I like abstract painting-like things such as this: [t]http://fc07.deviantart.net/fs70/f/2012/086/4/1/415a1a4d95a782f5fd2b98e8fa1b1e7e-d4u6a2a.jpg[/t] And scifi things like this: [t]http://fc02.deviantart.net/fs71/f/2012/049/f/8/popularity_by_alexiuss-d4q7l0v.jpg[/t] [t]http://fc08.deviantart.net/fs71/i/2012/084/b/3/scifi_soldier_by_aokera-d4tv5rp.jpg[/t] What are some art pieces you like that incorporate some of those things?

A little in-progress doodle: Johnny Bravo and Duke Nukem. I decided to make this because (1) every YouTube commenter feels driven to point out that the two are similar (2) I want to practice vectoring on Johnny (3) I want to practice drawing on Duke (4) I want to practice muscles because I am terrible at them Stuff to work on: Duke's head is weird because I traced over my sketch and didn't check anatomy/layout, body positions (back turned, arm flexed) on both are strange, hands are hard, I can't get Johnny's hair right, it's hard to draw Johnny's body because it's a large solid black object. I'm going to draw over the current linework at least once more. Constructive criticism, tips, and/or references/guides would be greatly appreciated. [editline]30th March 2012[/editline] Also I just realized Johnny's arm is 100% on the wrong side of his body
Hey, this is my first post out of the Games subforums in a long time, but I wanted critique on this thing I did in honor for an artist I have grown to love over the past month; Applebeans
beans found it through reblogs before he got to my message, hah http://applebeansokay.tumblr.com/post/20155448124/youdumbdominick-might-be-a-brony grats on the notes 'n stuff
I started using a tablet about a month ago, here is my second drawing using it. And my third drawing which I finished yesterday. I had a reference for both, though I didn't stay 100% true to it. These drawings took me ages to complete, probably much longer than it should have. I'd really appreciate as much advice as I can get, as well as some tips to work faster.

The more knowledge and experience you have under your belt, the better you'll be able to simply your drawings into your own style. The above is really the only crit amateur manga drawings deserve, merely because by starting off your learning curve with stylised drawing will CRIPPLE your improvement rate. If you ever want to be good at this stuff, you'll need to know how to draw a person properly; otherwise you'll always be an amateur. This is the harsh truth.
Can I have some tips before I continue?
Nose could do with being a little bigger for realism, but if you're going for/don't mind it coming off stylised then that's cool Using a hard line for the jawline is a mistake; people's chins/jaws are rounded, they don't come to an abrupt edge. The "line" that's there is created by the contrast between the shadowed neck and the face which has light hitting it. Therefore, when the face/neck/jawline are evenly lit, they may be "invisible" on a B&W drawing or painting. This doesn't happen very often in life obviously, here's an example (which is kind of poor because it's been extra-burnt out but you see what I'm talking about:) In short there's no line to be drawn there, just have the tone of the face and the tone of the neck meet each other to create that shape. Another thing, people's top lips are almost always in shadow, and the bottom lip isn't. This is due to lighting almost always coming from above, whether indoors or out, which I'm sure you have figured out yourself. Few examples from google images: http://www.family-and-pet-portraits.com/images/family-portrait100.jpg http://www.digital-photography-school.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/07/portrait-background.jpg http://limewedge.net/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/Portrait-photography-7.jpg http://www.digital-photography-school.com/wp-content/uploads/2007/08/portrait-mode.jpg You'll see that everywhere anyway, if you're looking for it. Also with lips I find contoured shading (following the upward curve of the top lip from where it meets the bottom and so on) works best. Feel out the shape with your pencil.

[editline]30th March 2012[/editline] The first one has 0 roundness. Second one is just a square. Both with Direction turned on for Angle Jitter. [editline]30th March 2012[/editline] This is for my final illustration due next week and it just looks like dick.

[editline]30th March 2012[/editline] The first one has 0 roundness. Second one is just a square. Both with Direction turned on for Angle Jitter.
it's just a problem with the program not keeping up with tight rotations for large surface areas on things like that first brush. Since it's a thin line instead of a thick square, it has smoother edges in curves but has a tenancy to break if you curve too hard and the brush rotates faster than the spacing can keep up. have you tried turning the spacing percentage down? also how do you enable direction-following squares oh man I missed that one

Direction is under Shape Dynamics under Angle Jitter.
I always avoided that because of the term jitter, you'd think they would make that kind of option a bit more obvious wow that's some wonky squarebrush [t]http://img99.imageshack.us/img99/5307/screenshot2012033006061.png[/t]

CS6 beta I haven't dinked around in it at ALL, but from what I can tell a lot of the improvements are on the photography side of things
Have a rabbit I found it very hard to shade it and give it definition, any tips? Reference: Thought something was wrong with the eye, of course its easy to see that now they are next to each other :(

What the hell.
actually i just checked and mine do get like that a bit, its like the bottom example in the picture you posted. i guess its just the angle jitter being set to be controlled by direction. I've just never really used direction for that. I either just don't have any angle jitter or set it to pen tilt (if your tablet supports that)

I do now realize that feather looks very strange, not too sure how I missed that before. Also I didn't get the general shape of the bird right, it seems too stretched, vertically. As for the log, that I didn't try stay accurate with. I just glanced at the reference and drew it. Well, here it is anyway: [thumb]http://imgs.mi9.com/uploads/animal/4101/mountain-blue-bird_1680x1050_69886.jpg[/thumb] I don't know what species that is, sorry. I just found a picture of a nice looking bird and tried to draw it.
