The problem is that Bruno was not deeply religious, he denied almost all of major Catholic doctrine
Well you can't say that he wasn't deeply religious. He just rejected the teachings of the Catholic and Reformed faiths. The fact that they killed him for thinking differently still conveys a meaningful message.
Fair enough. The mere fact that two people got two different interpretations is enough to make me question the writer's motives yet again. I'll rewatch soon and pay closer attention.
I thought more about this, and read this quote.
(Tyson) asks: "Is it political if I tell you that if we burn coal, you're going to warm the atmosphere? Or is that a statement of fact that you've made political? It's a scientific statement. The fact that there are elements of society that have made it political, that's a whole other thing," Tyson says. "We're telling you what science tells us about the world and what you do with that information, that's what you do. But I worry that people are making decisions about the world under-informed about what science has to say about the world."
http://www.usatoday.com/story/life/tv/2014/03/08/fox-cosmos-series-with-neil-degrasse-tyson/6059985/ Cosmos is giving statement of fact, based on evidence. And our evidence says that things like this are harming the Earth. If people can't handle the truth, or if it seems too political, that's too bad.
While I love the fact that it's airing on every major FOX network simultaneously every week (that's a tremendous fact) I can't help but feel let down by the pacing due to their time constraints. 44 mins felt super fast to me watching this first episode, and as they start to delve into more hardcore science I worry about their ability to get the wealth of information across in a succinct way.
Anyone catch the second episode? It was pretty epic!
Just saw the second one, and loved it! Absolutely fantastic!
I love how he places questions to he's viewers after watching 2nd episode. and the amazing homage to carl sagan keeps going, which where people who don't know him or the first Cosmos series, are tempted to watch it.
Come with me!
I watched the first episode today when it was on TV, it was good. The parts involving Sagan were great, i hope there's more of those in later episodes. I don't know how it compares to the original series though as i've not seen it yet.
2nd episode was amazing compared to the first, this one was def more sagan style. More philosophical as well as scientific. Also the evolutionary tree part was great, one of my favs from the old series.

It sounds so corny but watching this series always makes me teary eyed, our universe is so beautiful and this is one of the few things I've seen that does it justice.
So I just watched the second episode and got me thinking. We don't know if there is life in other planets, and if there is, it would be completely different from terrestrial life. But, why don't WE send life to other planets in probes, maybe bacteria or things like that which could probably survive the harsh climates. We don't know if there is life, but we could SEND life to them. Yeah sure, it may die instantly, but if they manage to survive, we could have developed life like our planet, with a lot of species, in the span of million of years.

Similar to how invasive species damage local ecosystems here on Earth, there's some scientists who worry that sending astronauts or even rovers to another planet could completely kill off what little life is possibly there.
I knew I saw that gif at the end somewhere on the interwebs.
It sounds so corny but watching this series always makes me teary eyed, our universe is so beautiful and this is one of the few things I've seen that does it justice.
It brings me back to when I was a kid. I have fond memories of chilling out and watching documentaries about space or about dinosaurs or something with my dad. I used to look forward to watching NOVA each week on PBS.
I just watched the second episode. It was amazing.
I just finished episode 3. I have to say, this was my favorite so far. I know Tyson has a real hard on for Newton, so I was expecting this to be "the Newton episode" but not only was it not that, but they did an amazing focus piece on Edmond Halley. There's so much about him that people don't know. They only know him for the comet thing. It's hard to really say much about Cosmos because it's really well done. I mean, it's like everything I have to say boils down to, "Yeah it's pretty good."
I don't think this show is being watched by many of the younger generation. It seems that the audience for this show is mostly the same audience for the original.
That reference to cannabis, wasn't expecting that.
The original Cosmos is gone from Netflix now. Damn. I was planning on watching the whole series by Friday in place of reading the book in the same amount of time (I'd rather enjoy that slowly) for a school report haha. There goes that idea. I have a feeling Netflix has removed more from the site than added since 2010.
Oh my, Halley sure got a lot of shit done.
Man that episode was great. Loving this show

I used to watch Neil deGrasse Tyson on Nova and Nova Science Now on PBS when I was younger. I just watched an episode about the Earth's origins. Tyson has much more charisma now on Cosmos than he did back then, but watching that episode was like watching a proto-Tyson Cosmos.
Anybody else catch Patrick Stewart's voice in the latest episode?
The black hole parts looked really cool.
I'm consistently happy with the animation quality in the show. It's really something Cosmos deserved.
I think i've never been closer to shedding a tear than in the end of this episode. Had it lasted 10 more seconds i don't know if i could've contained myself.
I really wish there was a whole episode on black holes, but maybe I'm biased. I don't really think there are more interesting objects in the universe.
