Your teacher is dumb.
United States is the official name we use on all proper documentation.
Your teacher is fucking retarded.
Remember kids, don't think 100% of the bullshit your teacher spews out is true.
Your teacher is an idiot.
We're in America, and we are a ton of separate states all united under one federal government. We are the United States of America.
Now go and tell that to the teacher and come tell us what he says after that.
Kill your teacher.
Your teacher is fucking retarded [/bandwagon]
I see what you are saying but he fails to see that our description is our name

I refer to Canada and the US as America often, but also refer to the US as just America. Overall, we are indeed named the United States of America.
Seeing as it the "United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland" it is a description of this country.
It's not tho, that's just a group of countries just like the US is a group of states.
It's almost like saying the EU is a country.

Might be soon.
The United States of America is our countries name, why is that hard to understand
We were always told that the continent America was named after Amerigo Vespucci, and Italian explorer. But I am reading on Wikipedia that controvery surrounds that, because Vespucci's first name was not originally Amerigo, it was Alberigo.
The guess is that the continent was actually named after a gold rich territory in South America, called Amerrique in Nicaragua. So the Italian explorer possibly changed his name to Amerigo to take credit for the name, since he probably DID find the mainland first. Interesting.

As to if we are really called The United States of America, this if from Wikipedia:
The current name was finalized on November 15, 1777, when the Second Continental Congress adopted the Articles of Confederation, the first of which states, "The Stile of this Confederacy shall be 'The United States of America.'
Your teacher is speaking figuratively, in a way that confuses everyone. He sucks.

The Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka is a great name.
:ussr:
Anyways, yea, there's always an issue over this but it's been established that the "United States of America" is the name that'll stay.
They came up with the name at the founding, but other names like Columbia and The Union were also used, but imagine how that would sound now.
OUR country?
I hate it when people don't think about other countries.
