throw gasoline on your teacher and light him on fire he isn't american probably some communist gook
quit saying gook all the time, do you have something against asians or something?
Your history teacher should reconsider his career.
It's teachers like yours that are fueling the "Americans are ignorant" theory. I'm sorry, but that's ridiculous. Hundreds of years and we don't have a name yet?
No, the name of our country is the United States of America, you blubbering tard. In french it's even estat-unite or some shit like that.
Les Etats-Unis You were close :P
Your teacher got his degree in Smoke Weed and Party during Class Hours.
In Spanish the USA is known as Los Estados Unidos or EE. UU. In response to the French reference above.
Or so my World History teacher said. He pretty much explained that "The United States of America" is just a description of our country and not an actual title. We cant simply name ourselves America because Canada and Mexico are also technically American since we all reside in North America. So what my teacher is saying is that we have yet to actually name our country. Now I kinda understand both ways, really. I asked my mom this and she pretty much called my teacher a retard. I'd like to hear your input on this. It's been something that's been bugging me all day.
it's called the united states of america
The United States of America is the actual name of the country. Yes, you can call yourselves American, as you are, however calling the USA America is not proper, as there is Also Mexico and Canada on the continent. Canadians can call themselves Americans, as well as Canadians, the same with Mexico. The United States of America is a good name, as they are states, that are located in America, whom united for mutual prosperity and protection. E.G. Before Canada was Canada, it was called the Dominion of Canada, meaning that Canada was a dominion of land united as one.
E.G. Before Canada was Canada, it was called the Dominion of Canada, meaning that Canada was a dominion of land united as one.
That's true. In fact, it was a common name up until the 50s. "Canada" evolved from The Dominion of Canada in the same way "America" has evolved from The United States of America.
I fucking hate it when people from USA calls their country America. So they mean it includes Mexicans, and Canadians, not to mention South America -.-
No one actually ever refers to an "America", though - there's a North America and a South America, collectively referred in plural as the Americas. Finders keepers, I suppose, even though it isn't accurate
This is why I always say United States/US and never say USA. In a similar way, I always say I'm British and come from the United Kingdom because I'm a strong British unionist and think that England, Scotland and Wales are totally phony.
The United States of America is a country belonging to the region and continent named North America. what's called the US is not all of North America, Canada is part of North America as well, and not included in the USA or the US government (such as Puerto Rico or Guam)
From now on The USA shall be known as... ...Burgerostania
No duh when the people from the US took the name for themselves. Though what else are we to call them? united Statians?
United Stations. Doesn't sound too bad :fuckyou:
I'm a strong British unionist and think that England, Scotland and Wales are totally phony.
*Cough*Northern Ireland*Cough*
No, Italian guy
Countries aren't named after Christian names.
Lies. You want to wipe Sweden off the map, don't you?
alright you got me, but then i shall invade your country!
I kind of see where the OP is coming from, but it's still stupid. Kind of like the province of "Newfoundland". You could call it a description if you wanted, but it IS the official name.

I kind of see where the OP is coming from, but it's still stupid. Kind of like the province of "Newfoundland"

stupid. Kind of like the province of "Newfoundland"
Don't talk shit about Newfoundland bi.
It's a description all right, but it's also used as a name. Just like the Netherlands describes lands in the nether.
The name 'America' comes from the surname of a Welsh guy.
No it doesn't, it comes from Amerigo Vespucci who explored parts of the new land.
Republic of South Africa United Arab Emirates Republic of Korea (South Korea) Central African Republic There are probably more
I fucking hate it when people from USA calls their country America. So they mean it includes Mexicans, and Canadians, not to mention South America -.-
If we called our country North America then yes it would include all those. Everybody knows what someone means when they sayh they are from America. I have never heard of someone from Canadia when asked were they are from say America.
We were always told that the continent America was named after Amerigo Vespucci, and Italian explorer. But I am reading on Wikipedia that controvery surrounds that, because Vespucci's first name was not originally Amerigo, it was Alberigo. The guess is that the continent was actually named after a gold rich territory in South America, called Amerrique in Nicaragua. So the Italian explorer possibly changed his name to Amerigo to take credit for the name, since he probably DID find the mainland first. Interesting. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Americas#Naming As to if we are really called The United States of America, this if from Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USA#Etymology Your teacher is speaking figuratively, in a way that confuses everyone. He sucks.
According to the QI book of General Ignorance it is named after some welsh guy
Central America isn't a continent
Where did I say it was ? I only said it was made of the 3 america..
Republic of South Africa United Arab Emirates Republic of Korea (South Korea) Central African Republic There are probably more
republic of china= Taiwan
No, the name of our country is the United States of America, you blubbering tard. In french it's even estat-unite or some shit like that.
in Norwegian it's called "Amerikas forente stater", but the more "fine" name is "De forente stater i Amerika", or short "statene" (the states). The name is The united states of America.
The name 'America' comes from the surname of a Welsh guy.
Incidentally he was called Dai Americ (Pronounced Die .... DIE AMERICA, is essentially his name). <3 QI.
