Request: Logo for Saint Louis City Parade and Fair Day
11 replies, posted
Creative folks, I've got a bit of graphic design work that I could use a spot of help with. Here's the event: the city of Saint Louis, Missouri has given the thumbs up to a parade and fair day honoring the returning Iraq veterans and their families. There's no political angle involved: just a quick parade, a few speakers, and plenty of fanfare to congratulate the soldiers on finally returning to their families, and as way of thanks for their numerous sacrifices on behalf of the people of Saint Louis. The parade organizers (namely, my pop and a handful of other equally broke dudes and dudettes) are in need of a good logo for banners and web-pimpage, and are hurting for manpower on that front. I'm sad to say that I can't offer much in the way of reward, but if you contributed a logo to the cause you'd get the warm, fuzzy feeling of doing a nice thing for a bunch of sons, daughters, husbands, and wives who haven't seen each other for quite some time (and for some others who won't, ever again). The best consolation prize I can offer is that, since this is a city-endorsed event, it might be a good mark for an artist's portfolio.
Theme, Artistic Direction
We're trying to avoid crying eagles, benevolent Uncle Sams, and anything grim, but other than that we're pretty open to your artistic input. Here are some themes that you could potentially draw from: soldiers reuniting with their families, the Saint Louis Arch (picture link), military seals (picture link), and the colors of the American Flag.
Deadline
-cut, see below-
If you need any more information, just let me know! You can plop your submissions right in here, or PM them to me if you feel more comfortable that way. If any conditions change (such as deadline, reward, dates, etc), I'll be sure to keep you in the loop. Thanks!
IMPORTANT UPDATE:
Oi, just got word from dad about his meeting with the organizers. The official meet with the city whatchamacallits is tomorrow, which means the deadline for the logo is also tomorrow. I really don't expect you guys to cram on a logo with so little notice, but if anyone does manage to come up with anything, I'd be really appreciative. The stand-in logo we have right now is very bad, and I'd hate for that one to be presented as the official icon of the parade. I'll cram on this too, but I'm pretty amateurish at this sort of thing, so hopefully one of you guys can pull me out of the fire with something nifty! If not, I understand.
UPDATE 2:
I've been getting a lot of great submissions on this page and through PM! Thanks so much to everybody who has contributed! I've passed all the content along to the actual planners, who are very excited with all the unexpected art! In addition to several great logo designs, we've been getting some fantastic flyer and banner designs! Though the deadline for the logo is tomorrow, we'll be happy to accept and all new flyers, banners, and poster designs you pass on to us for the next week or so! Here are the finer details you might need to know if you want to help out with one of those:
Event Name: The Welcome Home Heroes of Iraq Parade
Location: Market Street, Saint Louis
Date: 28 January, 2012
Time: 12:00 (noon) to 3:00 p.m.
I will try to make one a bit later, just gotta do some work around the house first. Hopefully after 5 some time I'll start (whatever time that is in Missouri, should be similar to Manitoba).
Can't promise I'll get anything together in time, but we'll see.
What is the actual name of the event?
The event itself is clumsily titled "Welcome Home the Heroes From Iraq Parade," but a logo without text would be preferred, just so it's a bit more versatile. I appreciate you takin' a crack at it, man.
No problem, hopefully I can figure something out in time. Anyways, talk to you later.

K, this is my first idea. I'll try something else probably if I have time, sorry if it is too literal or something, its kind of a tricky theme and I whipped it out pretty quickly.

(The smaller ones in the corner are simplified versions of the bigger one, might look better without the water I wasn't sure)
I like that quite a bit, actually! It's much simpler and more to-the-point than what I came up with. I'll definitely submit that one to the decision makers, along with anything that comes after it that sparks interest! Thanks, man.
Here was what I came up with (you can see why I wanted help with this):

If I could ask for any tweak to yours, Smeet, it would be to change the ribbon to a yellow one (yellow ribbons are support the troop ones, I think red is for breast cancer). Otherwise, I dig it.
I like the first one the most, but here are
Two alternates focusing a bit more on the reunion of family idea, might be too abstract Im not sure.

Hey, that one's great, too! Thanks so much for the help, man. You're a lifesaver.
Hey, could we get some higher-res pictures to use?
I really hate going to events and the Graphic Work posted around town looks like shit.
Need something to work with.
I think we're going to go with that new one for the logo, Smeet. It's pretty much exactly what we were looking for. Thanks again, man! I'll keep you updated.
