Do not use ammonia based cleaners, to a cat it smells like urine so they'll pee wherever you cleaned trying to pass along their scent.
Make sure the loose part of the toilet paper roll is against the wall and maybe cover up the armrests of all your chairs.
Don't bother buying them toys or a bed. Cigarette papers, pens, shoelaces and sweet wrappers will honestly suffice for toys. I bought my cat a shit ton of stuff and he just ignores it and plays with shit laying around the house.
Also he has slept in his cat bed maybe once, the rest of the time he curls up on one of my tshirts or something else that is just 'there'.
This. Cats are infamous for using things that dont belong to them. Dont try to trick your cat either. If you leave a "comfortable looking" shirt on the bed, and a freshly ironed and expensive button-up in another room, it will almost always choose the latter.
Get your cat vaccinated asap. My cat hated it and stayed under the bed for a few days, but its worth it. The cat I had before had died of a disease that may have been preventable. :frown:
If you let your cat outside in its infancy, watch it. Wait until it gets older before you let it outside and go back to playing video games.
Be prepared for broken objects. My cat has ruined tons of items when it gets random "energy highs" during the night, or early morning. Expect some damage to furniture if your cat is dumb and thinks that 1000$ couch can be replaced.
As a training device, buy an empty squirt bottle from a dollar store(dont use a windex one or something), and fill it with water. Squirt kitty whenever he/she does something that isnt allowed. They hate it, and with training you can angle the shots to hit kitty across the room when he/she is clawing that couch.
Take any precautions with nearby roads, as I see dead cats on the sides of these country roads every day. Do what you can to make kitty safe. Also, dont try chasing your cat outside for whatever reason. 9/10 times they will run up a stupidly high tree.
Have fun.!
EDIT: Dont declaw it. Thats a last resort approach. If kitty goes outside, claws can and will save her life when running from dogs or defending herself.

but dey soooo cute!

my fat cat Marusa.
Protip: if it's a male, neuter it ASAP before it keeps you up all night meowing. i own another cat, who's male and an absolute spastic. also, try to get a cat with a black nose, say what you want, but i've noticed they are generally smarter (my spastic cat, has a black nose, has never shat outside the litter bowl, while my fatass cat does not even know it's own name.)
Second the neutering. Generally if you don't want offspring, "fix" it.
I know how the procedure works, my cat is declawed.
No it is not to the first knuckle stop exaggerating.
You're truly disgusting. It may not be up to the first knuckle but it's still cutting through bone, like if you were to just cut your fingertips off right after your nails.
Declawing tends to make cats meaner.
Why did this man get disagrees?
Until you train them to use the litter box, they will. This goes twice over when they get older, as they simply stop caring and will wharf everywhere.
I have two cats, I know. They weren't too bad as kittens, they were fine as adults, and they're over ten years old now and they've stopped putting forth as much effort to make it to the litter box.
I got my kitten at about 6-7 weeks and it already knew what to do :|.
Declawing tends to make cats meaner.
And it's a really messed up, and cruel, thing to do. It's really gross if you KNOW how it's done and get it done anyways, and you're a very terrible person.
No, do not declaw it, you are sick. They literally cut the cats fingers off, to the first knuckle.
Thats like saying that neutering is bad too because it cuts off their testes and their penis, which it doesn't.
[editline]11:06PM[/editline]
Also, wheres this bullshit about cats getting meaner coming from, we had both my Tabby and Russian Blue declawed and they aren't mean. My Tabby gets mean because my kitten pisses him off all the time, but before we had my kitten he was fine.

How are neutering and declawing related at all? Besides both being things you do to your animals. It's not about disagreeing or not, it IS cruel, and most vets won't even do the procedure. It's banned from plenty of countries, but Americans are lazy pricks who can't teach their cat not to scratch something (or the many other alternatives), so they just cut the claws off.
Don't de-claw it, most cats I know that are de-clawed are pretty aggressive (as compared to clawed cats). And if it does manage to find its way outside it has the capability of climbing, jumping, defending itself.
Don't give it milk or tuna until it's older, it's stomach can't handle it and it will throw up.
Grab it by the back of the neck on occasion while its laying with you. Mothers grab the extra skin to calm them down. (I wouldn't carry it like this though, you may freak it out)
If the cat does end up biting you a spray of water will scare them away and keep them at bay.
The best toys I find are those little sparkly balls you can get at craft stores. Mine would play fetch. Or a bunch of feathers tied to the end of a string (sometimes at the end of a pole if you buy it). Move the feathers around to make it look like it's walking around. The cat will pounce on it instead of you. (Also good for outdoor cats, they learn to hunt this way)
If you are scratching the cat and you don't really want to anymore, you can just stick your finger out and it will scratch it self with your finger.
Eventually you can train your cat to become a cat yodeler (skip to 2:05):

Why would you want to teach your cat to hunt?
[editline]08:22PM[/editline]
That's one other thing: if they bring you dead animals, don't scold them. They're trying to contribute to the group. They'll just go get more if you scold them.
Why would you want to teach your cat to hunt?
Because its natural instinct. :hurr:

We do try to teach our cats not to scratch, but most of the time they do not listen. I know your going to say "Well your not trying hard enough," so don't even try to.
My cat loves me when I rub her stomach, it puts her in a state of ecstasy.

We don't scold them, because its what they do. We actually like it because where we live, there is a lot of foliage, so they get rid of rodents.
Cats have barbed penis. Don't ever try to fuck one.
If you want to give it milk, give it cat milk not human milk.
"Human milk" is cow milk 'case ya forgot.

My cats like water, so water squirters don't work, and sparkly balls they lose interest in, and scratching posts they ignore. Also, another reason we have declawed our cats is because we have a disabled member, and the first time we didn't declaw our kitten, her legs were torn up by the claws.

Also, since when do they get more aggressive? Every time we declaw our cats they actually get less aggressive.
Put a sock over its head. Make sure there aren't any sharp objects or stairs around. Endless hours of fun.
Alternatively, tape paper bags around all of its feet.
...
Don't worry about your cat hating you, I've done this to all 3 of mine at some point and time, and they sleep on my bed on a semi-regular basis.

You're still incredibly lazy. There are many other options. Trim their claws regularly, use these http://www.softclaws.com/, Pedi-paws, or get a emery scratching pad infused with catnip. Cutting the equivalent of your cats fingertips off isn't the correct solution to your problems.

So what if it's instinct? You don't need to teach them it. They can be really harmful to certain species.

Such as?
Will hide in your house somewhere for most of the day and when you finally find it it will run away
Such as?
It's just what I've heard, even if not, I don't think it's a good thing to teach your cat to pointlessly kill things when they have no need to do so, plus it's messy.
You could learn how to cook and prepare whatever animals they drag in and save money on cat food.
We got a kitten a few months ago, and I'm still having trouble figuring out how to pick him up and hold him. I tried cradling him like a baby, but he doesn't seem to like that.
I'm afraid to pick him up by the nape of his neck because I'm worried that it'll hurt him. Advice?
cats like tape on their back
I have to put tape on my cat's tail, or else it will actually try and hurt itself.
I don't know if this has been said, but don't clip his nails yet. Some cats are indoor cats, some are outdoors. Wait a while to see. If it's an indoors, and your sure, clip em'. But if they are outdoorsy, make sure they have nails. It's their only defense.
Cat's don't like to be rubbed on the belly.
My cats love Lego, they don't leave it alone.
Also anything that moves, love watching them trying to catch a moth.
Put mustard up his butt and look at him go!
Also, cuddle with him.
Keep it's litter box clean and continue to do this as it gets older. If it gets unhappy with it's litterbox conditions it's more than likely to piss on things other than cat litter.
