My grandpa was sent to one of the American internment camps for Japanese Americans during WWII.
what the nazis did was nothing compared to japanese torture. I feel bad for him.
:godwin:
:godwin:
My Grandpa was one of the soldiers that liberated Jews from the largest Concentration Camp, Auschwitz-Birkenau.
Pro tip: Barely half of those 6 million were Jewish.
What are you talking about how ignorant can you be. 11 Million were killed in the camps, 6 million of which were jewish.
I never heard 20 million, I always thought it was 10.
10 is the most conservative estimate, and 26 millions is the highest. Most people accept between 18 and 20 million as the most likely.
10 is the most conservative estimate, and 26 millions is the highest. Most people accept between 18 and 20 million as the most likely.
Really? In America, we're taught that it's somewhere around 11. [editline]05:23PM[/editline] I guess America likes being conservative about mass genocide. Who knew.

Why is it varied so much this i cannot understand.
So his mum didn't make it even though she was sent to England? [editline]10:36PM[/editline]
Why is it varied so much this i cannot understand.
I cannot answer this without making it sound like I'm bashing the South...but thats just my guess
Surely it's only one figure - although I guess that figure could be hard to find. Not all records would be necessarily available.
what the nazis did was nothing compared to japanese torture. I feel bad for him.
I think he means that his grandfather was a Japanese-American living in the USA and was sent to an internment camp there.
Why is it varied so much this i cannot understand.
Well, if you can guess that there were 50 people in Yugoslavia in 1942, and 10 were Jewish, and the concentration camp had 15 people in it, and after there were 30 people left in Yugoslavia and 3 were Jewish, then how many were killed in the camp? How many by the war? How many escaped? How many int he camp were Jewish? It's not as organized as today where we have hard facts, numbers, names, etc, there was alot of guesswork in this.
Nice to know.
This thread is now about how many Jews were killed during the Holocaust.
Been to auschwitz-birkenau. Not a pleasant view.
Been to auschwitz-birkenau. Not a pleasant view.
Is the entire place open to the public? Or only certain areas?
I've visted Bergan-Belsen, which was unsettling. I think the main thing was how quiet it was. There was just a huge field full of mass graves, and no sound, not even birdsong even though it was surrounded by trees.
OP, did he talk about his psychological state after the war (besides the obvious, losing your entire family and all)? I'm asking you that because my dad, when he was a kid, once had a neighbor next door whose grandpa -of italian ascendancy- was a Holocaust survivor too and--read this very carefully--that kid told my dad that every time there was a thunderstorm, his grandpa started to cry, like, scared shitless kind of crying, because it remembered him the sound of bombs going off... We can only imagine what was going through his head everytime he heard a bolt of lightning... Poor old man :/

An old man curled in fetal position crying in the dark as lightning goes off outside.. ugh.
I never met a Jewish one, but my Grandpa is seeing a Polish one, which she had the same experience of being taken to the camps.

Not bashing on anyone, but approximately 60 million people died in WW2, making Jews 10% of them. So what about others? For example, Jasenovac concentration camp in NDH killed 1 200 000 Serbs, and around 50k jews and gypsies. And we were dumb enough to make union with them after what they did to us. :downs:
Not bashing on anyone, but approximately 60 million people died in WW2, making Jews 10% of them. So what about others?
The ignorant thing in this statement is that 1/6-1/4 of the people of the approximated 60 million were tortured/experimented on/abused to death as opposed to the rest of the figure which is people getting shot. Even if we factor in that the ones who were shot were not killed immediately, and instead slowly and painfully bled to death, the fraction of the total is a lot more shocking if only because the way it was executed. [editline]09:33PM[/editline] Unless I'm missing your point entirely in which case I apologize.
Yeah, a holocaust survivor came to my school. Pretty sad story he had. He asked a guard where his brother was and the guard laughed and pointed at the smoke.
i guess hitler missed one [editline]05:23AM[/editline]
Yeah, a holocaust survivor came to my school. Pretty sad story he had. He asked a guard where his brother was and the guard laughed and pointed at the smoke.
or two
I met a german holocaust survivor. can I make a thread?
This was definitely one of the meetings I will always remember. I feel so privileged. His mental state was seemingly fine.
My Grandfather survived the holocaust. His brother was killed right in front of him in a prison camp though.
Did they look like mice?

[editline]12:04AM[/editline] Funnily enough, Yugoslavia was bombarded by its allies at the end of a war.
