I mean seriously. So much "la-de-da-I'm-an-American-let's-shoot-dem-Nazis/Arabs/Gooks/Commies" "Look-at-me-I-have-a-gun-I'm-so-hardcore" I can barely even stand it. Most of them are just a massive ego trip trying to promote violence and mindless patriotism. Sure, there are a few out there that really jerk a few salty water droplets from the nasolacrimal duct, but not many have actual substance. I guess they're good if you're looking for a brainless movie with blood and guts. I've seen a few war movies that I've enjoyed, but for the most part (~90 percent of the time) they're really terrible either morally or in some other cinema-related way. I definitely didn't get my point across very well, but hopefully I have successfully shared at least some of my mind in this matter. Now share yo'pinions.
It sounds like you've never actually watched a war movie.
It's impossible not to make a war film in where a soldier actually has no form of comraderie in their group. Unless you cover something about Gomer Pyle.
there really shouldnt be a movie where the characters dont build a relationship
No Enemy at the Gates sucked and threw historical accuracy and realism down the drain for a love story and drama.
I like how it portrayed the Russians as British people. Come on, at least make some attempt at a Russian accent.
No bullshit glory and patriotism here.
Watched Platoon and The Thin Red Line last night. Those are both brilliant movies. Especially The Thin Red Line. Many of the shots show the contrast between the beauty of the landscape and environment and the ugliness of war and death.
Read the book tell me that again.
I don't think you understand what cliche means
Watch good war movies then? Why complain at shit movies.. Its so pointless. Thus a stupid thread.
i dont like comedies because i saw a few bad comedies so they all suck.
i dont like comedies because i saw a few bad comedies so they all suck.
I hate the actors who are like the people I hate, thus I hate the genre of movies.
Sorry dudes. Bad thread idea. I clearly was not thinking straight when I decided to (unsuccessfully) rant on war movies. War movies are actually alright in my book.
Anyone here ever watch Stalingrad? Great movie from the German perspective about the fighting in Stalingrad (derp). The whole movie kinda starts off as what you described, but very quickly turns into the idea that war is hell, and that saving your comrades and staying alive is more important than bothering with fighting. Gets pretty depressing towards the end, but its a nice refresher from your average war movie. Its also pretty much the only WWII movie from the German perspective I've seen.
I do hate War movies, but not for the reasons you've stated. I hate them because they're usually just showing the same war over and bloody over again, and they usually do not contribute to any new knowledge of said wars. They never give us another perspective, it's just the same bloody good guys running around shooting people and being called heroes for it.
Y'know I keep hearing the same people say this, but they never provide examples. Well do so. Because all the great war movies I can name of the top of my head don't really glorify their actions at all.
I said it once and I'll say it again: Stalingrad is the best war movie I've ever seen:
War movies are something I've just never gotten. My brother and father are ridiculous fanboys of them and keep a collection in the living room, but from all the ones I've seen, they're all just... meh.
I have watched and I own it two times :buddy:.
you own it two times? like you own two copies of it? why.
I like how it portrayed the Russians as British people. Come on, at least make some attempt at a Russian accent.
They did, Ron Perlman tried to have a Russian accent and it was just awful. No I don't think there would be a good Eastern front movie unless they hire actual Russians to play Russians and actual Germans to play Germans.
I think the OP was having a problem differentiating War movies and Action movies.
OP might like Nation's Pride.
I like war movies that have good stories, such as Saving Private Ryan (which is the best war movie ever. Hands down.). I can understand if you don't like war movies that don't make sense half the time (Flags of our Fathers), or war movies that are just shoot-em-ups, but the ones that you can obviously tell the writers/producers/directors put time into, are absolutely amazing.
Inglorious Bastards didn't glorify violence against Nazis and was a solid all round realistic war movie complete with historical accuracy. Recommended to OP.
I like war films but they tend to get repetitive. I'm probably more into the thriller type as you can get more variety in that genre.
Does anyone else find it annoying when someone hates a war movie because it's "pro-American", even though said movie was made in America and features American soldiers? It's not like Saving Private Ryan or Band of Brothers are displaying them as machine gun-toting brutes ripping apart everything they see with bullets. Get off the anti-American bandwagon.
no one has mentioned Jarhead yet?
OP might like Nation's Pride.
heh, good joke everybody laugh
no one has mentioned Jarhead yet?
Well, I was actually going to be the second post in this thread, and Jarhead was one of my points, but I discarded the post because I realized OP is a dumbass and so is everyone else who says all war movies are just about Americans kicking ass for glory. Fact of the matter is, try as I might, I cannot recall a single GOOD war movie that is anything the OP says every war movie is. And really, I doubt he can either.
I realize the futility of pointing out the shear retardedness of this argument so instead I'll use this as an excuse to plug the series "Generation Kill" it is set during "Operation Desert Storm" and is the most realistic depiction of soldiers serving in an armed conflict ever to be committed to film. if you have not seen this series you should see it now! It is damn good! damn damn good damn good good damn good damn damn damn good damn good!
