Why hasn't this thread died yet? I realize that my arguments are flawed and largely unsupported with evidence. Plus my "gee I really hate war movies" mood coincided with my "gee I really haven't posted a thread on Facepunch in a while" mood.
Well, I was actually going to be the second post in this thread, and Jarhead was one of my points, but I discarded the post because I realized OP is a dumbass and so is everyone else who says all war movies are just about Americans kicking ass for glory. Fact of the matter is, try as I might, I cannot recall a single GOOD war movie that is anything the OP says every war movie is. And really, I doubt he can either.
I can't let this post stay unresponded-to, though. I NEVER said EVERY war movie was like my OP description. If I remember correctly. And besides, the good movies are always the ones who break away from tradition, so no fucking shit the good war movies are different from the bad ones. Fuck you.
All This Thread And no mention Whatsoever of Top Gun. By God, Best airplane movie of all time and NO FUCKING REFERENCES IN A MILITARY THREAD?

Most of the good war movies have very anti-war and anti-death messages Saving Private Ryan Letters from Iwo Jima Schindler's List Full Metal Jacket Platoon The Deer Hunter etc
I've seen a few war movies that I've enjoyed
I swear, you people need to learn to fucking read. He never said that all war movies suck. One argument that could be made is that 90% of all movies suck, not just war ones. But saying LOL OP'S DUM BECAUSE THIS WAR MOVIE IS GOOD is just plain stupid.
No bullshit glory and patriotism here. [img_thumb]http://www.moviegoods.com/Assets/product_images/1020/198621.1020.A.jpg[/img_thumb]
It's interesting too because this was, I believe, the first large scale war movie ever made. In fact the overly patriotic war movie phenomenon only seemed to result from world war 2. What I don't understand is why war movies have to have messages. Who cares if Saving Private Ryan has an anti-war message. There's nothing impressive about that, obviously no rational person would walk around thinking that war is better than peace. I think a movie is bullshit when it's created with the intention of sending the audience a moralistic message, especially when it's one that they've already heard a million times.
Cross of Iron also has an anti-war message that questions the real value of military decorations. Especially captain Kiesel, he's boss. "Why do you want it so badly? It's just a piece of worthless metal."
Personally, themes like brotherhood and incompetent leadership oh so prevalent in war-films speak to me.
Little bit off-topic: For those of you who complain about too many WWII movies and nothing else like WWI: Excellent movie, go watch it.

I was just about to post about Cross of Iron - but then I scrolled down and saw the awesomeness of Captain Kiesel. Cross of Iron is my most favourite film. Ever. But aside from being a good film, it fits in well within the context of this topic because it is centralised around two main characters who are pretty much polar opposites: Cpl/Sgt Steiner, who hates war, officers (though slightly contradicted by how well he gets on with Lieutenant Myer) and the upper class in general, and Captain Stransky, a member of the Prussian aristocracy who considers himself superior because of his class, but who is also a completely incompetent coward. Needless to say, the two do not get on. Quite a deep scene: The only bad part of the film was the ending, which was anti-climatic as shit because the producers ran out of money.
I remember a film I watched with my brother, it was Russian and about the Russian invasion of Afghanistan in the 80s. I curse myself for forgetting it's name but it was awesome. I think it ended with the tiny Russian platoon fending off hundreds of Afghani soldiers from their trenches, but in the end all the Russians are killed.

Can anybody even name any good war movies that don't have an anti-war message? (Films like Inglourious Basterds don't count)
Can anybody even name any good war movies that don't have an anti-war message? (Films like Inglourious Basterds don't count)
No. The obvious reason being WAR IS ACTUALLY A BAD THING FYI
Can anybody even name any good war movies that don't have an anti-war message? (Films like Inglourious Basterds don't count)
First: Kelly's Heroes Second: Why do films "like Inglorious Basterds" not count?
The only bad war movie I've ever watched is "The cross roads". The best is "Taegukgi hwinalrimyeo", it is about 2 brothers during Korean war. [editline]1st January 2011[/editline]
I rarely watch war movies too, got tired of the usual "American good guys, good but useless British and evil Germans/Japanese/Russians without souls".
"Saints and Soldiers"
Sorry dudes. Bad thread idea. I clearly was not thinking straight when I decided to (unsuccessfully) rant on war movies. War movies are actually alright in my book.
Having an opinion that's different from everyone else's isn't illegal you know. Just because a lot of people like war movies doesn't mean you have to.
War movies are the best ones.
I haven't watched all that many, save SPR. But i often run downstairs to my Xbox to find my dad watching one of these and understand both sides.
Their all the exact same plot and movie, just with different people on a different front. The more original ones are alright though.
best anti-war movie: The Human Condition
I don't hate 'em
Apocalypse now :colbert:
Surprised the thin red line has not been mentioned at all in this thread, perfect anti war - war movie.
Surprised the thin red line has not been mentioned at all in this thread
What the fuck is that?
I don't hate them, but if I sit down and watch a movie, I prefer not to watch war movies.
Black Hawk Down. Fuck off OP.
Watch Cross of Iron. Eastern front, german perspective. That and stalingrad are excellent war films.
