Simply put, with time I started to dislike most of the common design choices in Japanese RPGs. To name some:
- The turn based battle system (I'm calling personal preference on this one: while I think it's a system with its own dignity, I find it annoying, dragging even the common battles longer and longer still and being generally unrealistic. Unless I'm playing an RPG with my friends on a table, I stick to action RPGs. This is so bad that I utterly refuse to play Final Fantasy VII even if the game is such I'm willing to ignore the other points of this list)
- The pretty much forced level grinding, one way or another (there are often points in the game where it becomes apparent you need to rank up several levels first, and if you even want to have a chance against the secret bosses, you may as well max out your characters)
- The intrusiveness of mini-games (I'm playing a fucking RPG, I don't give a single fuck about some little games I could as well play on my browser. This isn't helped by most JRPGs mini-games being presented as completely optional, but in truth granting you significant rewards which often are the only way get the best gear available or useful items for the endgame)
- The general lenght of the main game (usually I clock a western RPG around the 20-30 hours mark. JRPG are known to last for 40-50 hours, and even longer if you decide to go completitionist)
- Nearly all the artistic design tropes in such games (when I was younger I found the spiky, rainbow hair of most characters and the feeling the humans were all look alike amusing, akin to a funny quirp. Now I only find it annoying, overdone, silly. Same goes for the usual locations these games feature and the enemy department. It's my opinion that western RPGs are more varied and unique when it comes to the design of everything)
The only JRPGs I play at the moment are the Kingdom Hearts series and Bloodborne, because both of them defile some of the design choices I mentioned above and have unique gameplay or story gimmicks to them
I wouldn't say that Kingdom Hearts or Bloodborne are JRPGs, they are structured more like western RPGs.
I wouldn't say that Kingdom Hearts or Bloodborne are JRPGs, they are structured more like western RPGs.
Exactly.
Exactly.
You said in your original post that you consider them JRPGs. This is why I don't like that term, because even though they are RPGs created by primarily Japanese people, they aren't structured like most RPGs made in Japan.

It always confuses me when people say they don't like tea. Like, two teas don't necessarily taste even remotely similar...

Even the difference between sweetened/unsweetened tea is pretty big
Not sure if this has been mentioned in this thread before but
Am I the only one who is tired of the whole "CRAFTING SURVIVE ZOMBIE SHOOTER PVE PVP" game genre? Along with the word(s) "procedurally generated/ procedural etc" and all the other buzzwords indie devs use in their games
That and pretentious indie games that try to be ~~unique~~ but fail
It's like just hearing these words instantly makes me lose interest in the game
Hear me out here, I can't be the only one who has heard/seen countless new indie devs that give this description for their game.
"My new game is called X and it's going to be a survival game with a DYNAMIC crafting system(we include this word to make it seem incredibly ~~complex~~ "yeah dude the crafting system is so complex like last night I attached a dildo to a chair and fucked myself") and like there's zombies/aliens/dinosaurs/aquatic wildlife/ etc in it and the levels are completely PROCEDURALLY generated so you know that equals UNLIMITED REPLAYABILITY, what we actually mean by this is that roughly 99 percent of the levels that are generated are going to either be completely and utterly boring with no interesting terrain features that you'll delete after a short time, with the 1 percent of your generated levels actually having some interesting features, ALSO please PLEASE donate to my Kickstarter/ vote for me on Steam Greenlight/ buy my game on Steam early access for the low price of $29.99, ALSO don't talk shit about my game or else I'll ban you from posting on my game discussion forum on Steam, also this game includes an ADVANCED AI system that applies the lateral geometrical appliances of famous mathematicians like Descartes and Leonardo Fibonacci that changes the overall neutral responses of the artificial intelligence every time you play!
You must be living under a pretty large rock to think that's an unpopular opinion.

I don't post in this thread much sadly :(
The modern term and progression of "equality" is causing more exclusion and doing more harm than good.
It's a toss up between San Andreas and V for me.
Nothing can beat San Andreas for me. It's fucking huge, the characters are hilarious, and the setting's the shit.
the words toxic and trash are pretty stupid, now anyway
Not entirely. I'm all for equal rights for the LGBT community but I'd be lying if I said I didn't see some people hating on straight people because they "oppress" them. Like, I get it, it's obviously not gay people who would be against gay marriage, but come the fuck on, you're judging straight people with a blanket statement just like homophobes do with gay people. It's no fucking different and I feel like these people are going to be running in circles for a long time before they get the point.
although to be fair, people hating on straight folks tend to never have anything like actual political power, whereas it's possible to count an ABSURDLY high number of people in the US government whose opinions end up affecting large populations of LGBT peeps
it's not quite the same when an LGBT person is sick of their lives being a political issue, having to endure a lot of little things that straight people don't have to worry about at all, and then generalizing almost everyone by saying "I hate straight people!", compared to a closed-minded population that hates LGBT people because they're somehow immoral/gross/less-than-human AND said population being the one that defines the laws or what is/isn't a right and all that jazz
GTA:SA was good for it's time, but it aged horribly IMO
I think N64 was the best gaming system ever. Sometimes I really want to pick up 2 original controllers even though I'd pay up the ass for them.
I don't really care if a game has aged badly or not. If it's still playable, then it's fine by me.
GTA:SA was good for it's time, but it aged horribly IMO
Aged a lot better than GTA3.
I think N64 has aged better than PS2. It's like that awkward transition phase from SD to HD.
I like the rigid, stylized polygons and unreliable framerate. I know that sounds backwards, but the hardware of N64 had a certain charm. Also this could be due to nostalgia, and on a game-by-game basis
Katamari 1 and 2 still looks great
Unless it's on tv, I really hate seeing people kiss. Even in porn
In some cases I think music with a slightly sped up tempo sounds better than the original. For me its more blood pumping and lively, even if the original piece does the same thing. However I don't like when music is sped up and the voices are pitched, that sounds like shit.

The N64 was a good system but the controllers were terrible. The Nintendo GameCube had the best controllers of all time.

I hate the gamecube controller. It's too small for my hands so the grips feel uncomfortable and I can't comfortably use the Z button. That and I can't stand the triggers.
The 360 pad would be the greatest if not for the crummy D-Pad. Even then it's still my favorite. I'd imagine I'd love the Xbone pad, but I've barely touched it.

And the Dual Shock 4 would be wonderful if it had better battery life.
N64 controller was god awful, I would say the best other than keyboard/mouse would be the 360 controller or the Xbox One controller.
playstation controllers are for people who have neither baby hands nor sausage fingers

Dualshock and the gamecube controllers are still the best ones ever made, in my opinion. They fit perfectly.

This reminds me, is it a thing when you listen to music at night and your brain thinks the song sounds sped up a bit? I get this a lot for some unknown reason.

i get this a lot too
and it's weird, because it happens to a lot of songs that i play with a metronome to
even though it is a good game Wolfenstein TNO is very overrated.

i hate the GC controller for most games but it's the definitive smash controller
GTA 5 is a great game but the story is so awful and watered down.
GTA 5 is a great game but the story is so awful and watered down.
Michael's story was the only one I really enjoyed. I didn't care much for Franklin or Trevor, but I was always excited to see Michael's side of things.
[sp]I loved the subtle changes in his behavior when his family left him. You could tell he was seriously depressed without them.[/sp]

I blame the online for huge chunks of Franklin's character/story being abesnt
